Book excerpt: In the area of nucleation, it was discovered that C--0 thin films are perfect substitutes for diamond seeds in the growth of diamond films. This research, along with a careful study of diamond growth on carbon ion implanted single crystal copper, have clearly demonstrated that structured carbon is the best precursor for nucleation and growth of diamond films on non-diamond surfaces. In addition, by using fluorine chemistry during diamond growth, it has been shown that diamond films can grow on carbide substrates without the pretreatment of diamond seeding. The growth rates are higher and the film adhesion is much improved.

Book excerpt: The DOE has been supporting Professor Chang and his students in the area of plasma and photon synthesis of diamond-like and ceramic films with varying complexity during the past three years. We have made substantial contribution to the field during this period of time. Some of the important questions have been addressed, and they include: a. How does the energy (wavelength) of the laser change the composition and energy distribution of the ablated species? b. How do surface mobility and the intensity of the plasma plume affect crystal nucleation and growth? c. How can one manipulate the system parameters during film growth to achieve special properties for unique applications? In the area of photon synthesis, we have shown that amorphous diamond films can have properties very similar to polycrystalline diamond films and yet they may have wider applications in such areas as coating and electronics. For example, we have shown that these films can be used to protect plastics such as polycarbonate surfaces. During the course of our amorphous diamond films research, we have also identified important parameters which alter the film properties. Higher photon energy and laser power density contribute to higher percentage of carbon ion density and energy in the plasma plume. This in turn proves films with higher percentage of diamond-like sp3 bonds and thus diamond-like properties of the films. Lower photon energies and collision of the plasma plume with background gas will produce films which are rich in graphitic properties. In the area of oxide film growth, we have found, in general, that better crystalline films can be grown by laser ablation at much lower substrate temperatures than by chemical vapor deposition process. This is due to the fact that in laser ablation the depositing species have more kinetic energies and the whole process involves rapid solidification. By using optical emission spectroscopy, we have learned how to adjust the deposition parameters to control film properties such as grain size and crystal orientations. These control capabilities have allowed us to grow oxide films with unique properties, such as high optical nonlinearity. In addition, we have been able to grow films with special crystalline orientations to serve as templates for chemical vapor deposition processes.

Although most of the construction of the Triple-Torch Plasma Reactor (TTPR) has already been done, modifications have been made in particular modifications required for plasma CVD of diamond. A new reactor designed for Counter-Flow Liquid Injection Plasma Synthesis (CFLIPS) proved to be an excellent tool for synthesis of fine powders as well as for plasma CVD. An attempt was made to model flow and temperature fields in this reactor. Substantial efforts were made to single out those parameters which govern particle size, size distribution, and powder quality in our plasma synthesis experiments. This knowledge is crucial for controlling the process and for meaningful diagnostics and modeling work. Plasma CVD of diamond films using both reactors has been very successful and we have been approached by a number of companies interested in using this technology for coating of tools.

Book excerpt: The plasma or thermally enhanced low pressure chemical vapor deposition of diamond films is an exciting development with many challenging fundamental problems. The early stages of nucleation is relevant to the initial growth rate and the perfection and morphology of the deposit. To isolate one of the factors that influence nucleation, we have studied the effect of surface topography on the nucleation process. Our earlier work has shown preferential nucleation on sharp convex features and we have proposed several possible reasons for this behavior, including dangling bonds at the convex features. In our recent work, we have extended our investigation to include a novel patterning of silicon substrates used to pattern silicon solar cells. The results are consistent with our earlier observations that the majority of nucleation events occur on protruding surface features. In an effort to establish whether dangling bonds at the protruding surfaces may be responsible for the selective nucleation, we have evaluated the dangling bond concentration using electron spin resonance. We have carried out deposition under nominally identical surface topography, but with different concentrations of dangling bonds at or near the surface. The results of this study indicate that dangling bonds play a minor role in enhancing nucleation, in contrast to a substantial role played by special surface topographical features. In the course of the past year, we have submitted four manuscripts for publication and have made six presentations.

Films obtained with the use of pulse periods in the nanosecond, microsecond, and millisecond ranges were compared to baseline films which were obtained with a CW plasma. The deposited films were examined with SEM, XRD and Micro-Raman spectroscopy. For the experimental conditions used, the diamond films' growth rates and quality improved with increasing pulse duration while maintaining a duty cycle at nearly 50 percent, and reached a maximum with CW generated films. This was attributed primarily to an increasing degree of supersaturation of atomic hydrogen at the growth surface with increasing pulse time. diamond technology.
