Book excerpt: This book offers a concise, comprehensive resource for middle-aged readers who are facing the prospects of their own aging and of caring for elderly relatives—an often overwhelming task for which little in life prepares us. Everyone ages, and nearly everyone will also experience having to support aging relatives. Being prepared is the best way to handle this inevitable life stage. This book addresses a breadth of topics that are relevant to aging and caring for the elderly, analyzing each thoroughly and providing up-to-date, practical advice. It can serve as a concise and comprehensive resource read start-to-finish to plan for an individual's own old age or to anticipate the needs of aging relatives, or as a quick-reference guide on specific issues and topics as relevant to each reader's situation and needs. Using an interdisciplinary approach, Aging with a Plan: How a Little Thought Today Can Vastly Improve Your Tomorrow develops recommendations for building sustainable social, legal, medical, and financial support systems that can promote a good quality of life throughout the aging process. Chapters address critical topics such as retirement savings and expenses, residential settings, legal planning, the elderly and driving, long-term care, and end-of-life decisions. The author combines analysis of recent research on the challenges of aging with engaging anecdotes and personal observations. By following the recommendations in this book, readers in their 40s, 50s, and early 60s will greatly benefit from learning about the issues regarding aging in the 21st century—and from investing some effort in planning for their old age and that of their loved ones.

Book excerpt: Aging doesn't start when you're old! Our advancing age starts affecting us as early as our forties-and probably even earlier. The purpose of Ease into Aging: the Guide is two-fold: The first is to make people of all ages aware of what they could be facing down the road, and how to avoid (or at least mitigate) these effects. The second is to provide some tips and strategies to start the path to self-improvement. Small changes in activity, attitude, and decision making can lead to big results down the road. Efforts made today to hedge against the challenges of tomorrow can deliver tremendous rewards over a lifetime, leading to greater happiness and contentment in the golden years. Odds are that we will probably live longer than the generations that preceded us. We want to be able to enjoy the extra time without regrets. And we certainly don't want to be a burden on others because we didn't have the foresight to plan ahead. This book covers aging in a broad sense, as a process that happens (and is happening) to everyone. . Many books about aging only focus on diet and exercise, but that's not enough to help you achieve health, comfort, and security during the senior years. Ease Into Aging: The Guide covers these two important topics extensively, and also provides strategies to improve personal finances, relationships, appearance, adaptability, and general retirement-readiness and fluency. It also incorporates guided activities and suggestions to make life more purpose-driven and mindful for greater enjoyment of each day. The information and approaches in this book help readers engage more fully and intentionally, empowering them to take control of their futures. While this enlightening and well-organized narrative provides tools to begin the journey to a better you, it is ultimately your responsibility to make the important decisions that bring these changes to fruition. Ease Into Aging: The Guide helps make the pathway and decisions for success much easier, so you can better enjoy your later years, as well as the life you have today.

Book excerpt: The Boston Process Approach to neuropsychological assessment, advanced by Edith Kaplan, has a long and well-respected history in the field. However, its theoretical and empirical support has not previously been assembled in an easily accessible format. This volume fills that void by compiling the historical, empirical, and practical teachings of the Process Approach. The reader will find a detailed history of the precursors to this model of thought, its development through its proponents such as Harold Goodglass, Nelson Butters, Laird Cermak, and Norman Geschwind, and its continuing legacy. The second section provides a guide to applying the Boston Process Approach to some of the field's most commonly used measures, such as the various Wechsler Intelligence Scales, the Trail Making Test, the California Verbal Learning Test, and the Boston Naming Test. Here, the reader will find a detailed history of the empirical evidence for test administration and interpretation using Boston Process Approach tenets. The final section of the book provides various perspectives on the implementation of the Boston Process Approach in various clinical and research settings and with specialized populations.

Book excerpt: In Stop Aging Now!, Jean Carper -- winner of the 1995 Excellence in Journalism Award from the American Aging Association (the nation's leading group of scientists investigating the biomedical aspects of aging), nationally syndicated columnist and leading authority on health and nutrition -- documents how antioxidant vitamins, minerals, herbs and food chemicals are the magic youth potions humans have been seeking for centuries. Based on exciting new scientific findings from leading institutions, Stop Aging Now! reveals the stunning truth: Much of what we call aging is not inevitable, but is needless and can be prevented and reversed to a startling degree by supplements and foods. Indeed, aging is often due to unsuspected deficiencies that can be readily corrected, and even people in their sixties, seventies and eighties can turn back the clock and recover their youth. Leading scientists have found that: Vitamins can prevent and reverse memory loss and other signs of aging. Vitamins and minerals can rejuvenate immune functions, restoring youthful resistance to infections and cancer. Antioxidants in foods and supplements can help prevent clogged arteries, heart attacks and general bodily deterioration. Many unfamiliar but readily available food chemicals can prolong life and preserve your vitality.

Book excerpt: Since the late 1800s psychologists have been interested in discerning the strategies subjects employ to solve psychological tests (Piaget, 1928, Werner, 1940, Gesell, 1941). Much of this work, however, has relied on qualitative observations. In the 1970s, Edith Kaplan adopted this approach to the analysis of standardized neuropsychological measures. Unlike her predecessors, Dr. Kaplan and her colleagues emphasized the application of modern behavioral neurology to the analysis of the test data. Her approach was later termed the Boston Process Approach to neuropsychological assessment. While Edith Kaplan's work generates a great deal of enthusiasm, the qualitative nature of her analyses did not allow for its adoption by mainstream neuropsychologists. However, in recent years this limitation has begun to be addressed. Clinicians and researchers have developed new methodologies for quantifying the Boston Process Approach, leading to the emergence of a new field, which is collectively termed the Quantified Process Approach. Quantified Process Approach to Neuropsychological Assessment outlines the rationale for the emergence of this new approach and reviews the state of the art research literature and up to date clinical applications as they pertain to the evaluation of neuropsychiatric, head injured, and learning disabled patients. When available, norms and scoring forms are included in the appendices.
