Book excerpt: "Land-use planning is essential to fostering quality of life and harmony among the myriad social and economic activities that take place and compete for space in urban and metropolitan areas. Land-use planning also profoundly affects the commercial supply chains that deliver the goods and services that constitute urban and regional economies, and contribute to the quality of life. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 998: Planning Freight-Efficient Land Uses: Methodology, Strategies, and Tools is designed to prepare practitioners to make land-use decisions that minimize the private and external costs associated with the production, transportation, and consumption of goods by providing them with the tools needed to analyse the freight efficiency of current and future land uses in their jurisdictions, and identify and select land-use and transportation initiatives. Supplemental to the report are a tool for assessment of the overall impacts of freight land uses, a document about the research effort, and a presentation." -- publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interface between land use management and transportation planning represents probably the most important spatial impact in sustainable land use, mobility and transportation development. Prior to this book, only limited attempts have been made to integrate these topics as to enhance smart growth and sustainable development principles within spatial systems. The approach followed differs internationally and specifically between different planning and transportation authorities. The spatial impacts of land use and transportation serve as the main catalyst in urban form, development and its associated problems. These impacts represent severe consequences from a built and environmental development perspective. All of these are covered in the book and its supporting chapters. The focus of the book is the application of best practice principles in managing the interface between land use management and transportation planning. Internationally the practice is the promotion of more sustainable urban and rural forms supported by improved levels of accessibility through the application of smart growth and sustainability principles. The focus however remains to successfully optimise land use and transportation integration. The structuring used within each of the chapters provide the reader with the basic and applicable theory and practical knowledge to attain system wide integration and sustainability within the dynamics of spatial and transportation systems. The inclusion of specific theme related case studies endorses the relevancy of this book’s topic.

Book excerpt: Cities are the engines of an innovation-based economy where research and new ideas are the core input of production. Urbanisation is becoming synonymous of economic growth. People flock into cities, both in the developed and developing world, since here is where wealth is, where high quality services are available and life standards are comparatively higher with respect to other places. However, one has to acknowledge that growth also produces undesired negative effects. In fact, cities are net importers. They need to acquire consumption/intermediate goods, export production and get rid of waste. In other words, the existence of a city relies on a transportation system providing the necessary services for its functioning. The typical urban transportation system heavily depends on passenger and freight movements by road. While this dependency is, in some cases, less relevant for passenger transport, most of freight moved in, out, within and through a city relies on motorized road transportation. Trucks and vans are responsible for congestion, polluting emissions, accidents, noise, visual intrusion and stench. All these negative effects are concentrated where many citizens live and, consequently, produce relevant economic (e.g. time lost), environmental (e.g. air quality), and social (e.g. segregation) impacts. Cities to be attractive, sustainable and thriving need an efficient freight transportation system. Fast changing consumption patterns with the rise of e-commerce and home deliveries also point out to another dimension of cities: their need to adapt quickly to economic trends.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The efficient movement of freight is the foundation of our communities and economy. Disruptions to the movement of goods can have substantial economic and quality of life effects. At the same time, public sector planners and officials desire a clearer understanding of how goods movement benefits communities through job creation, tax revenues, and other benefits, while balancing the potential environmental and/or community disbenefits. NCHRP Web-Only Document 373: Integrating Freight Movement into Twenty-First-Century Communities' Land Use, Design, and Transportation Systems, from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program, develops a planning toolkit for public-sector decision-makers to better integrate freight and goods movement into the planning process for land use, design, and multimodal transportation systems. Supplemental to the report is a Freight Planning Toolkit dataset.

Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to department of transportation ( DOT) administrators, planning supervisors, managers, and staffs, as well as to planning consultants that work with them. It provides information for practitioners interested in the results of attempts to apply multimodal considerations at the statewide level and identifies key research findings. It covers post-ISTEA (Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991) processes and projects and both passenger and freight activities. The report examines the application of three multimodal aspects: alternatives, modal mix, and integration into three statewide planning functions, which include state planning, corridor studies, and financing, budgeting, and programming. The emphasis is on implementation. This report of the Transportation Research Board documents processes and research currently under development, using three approaches: a literature review, results of a survey of state DOTs, and five case studies. It cites the following states with exemplary practices in multimodal/intermodal transportation based on a 1998 report by the policy research project at the University of Texas on Multimodal/ Intermodal Transportation: Florida, Minnesota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The book identifies freight-related land use issues, key considerations, and available resources. Throughout the handbook, examples and case studies from a range of urban and rural areas across the country are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of these techniques.

Book excerpt: Numerous analyses have identified local land-use controls as the source of our continuing problems with residential segregation and environmental deterioration. Although recent efforts to resolve these problems have focused on policy-making in local government, the existing literature on land-use control provides little guidance for these efforts. In this context Situations and Strategies in American Land-use Planning meets a need. From case studies of regulatory processes in rural, rural-urban fringe, suburban and urban communities in Connecticut it develops an empirically grounded theory of land-use planning which has clear implications for reforming the local planning process. Thomas Rudel's book will be invaluable to all those involved in planning as well as being of interest to environmental and rural sociologists, geographers and political scientists concerned with local government.
