Book excerpt: Designing complete communities is challenging as designs should include social, experiential, and physical features that are numerous and often difficult to quantify. Balancing the conflicting needs and desires of stakeholders presents further complexity. There is an opportunity to use the generative design process to improve complete community design. This review synthesizes the literature on the generative design process, the elements of complete communities, and derives metrics from literature that can be used for assessing complete communities. The key elements of complete communities that are covered include: sidewalks, neighborhood parks, diverse land use, affordability, active transportation, exposure to noise and emissions, freight, and aesthetics. This review supports evidence-based policy and decision support that provides credibility to otherwise complex design decisions. Additionally, this research supports new methods to expand generative design technology and to boost public engagement. This paper also reveals new emerging opportunities for complete communities and generative design research to address methodological gaps, conceptual gaps, application possibilities, and different forms of human participation in generative design. Moreover, there are challenges between good enough and optimal, designing permanent versus transitory features, and the role of the designer. The detailed nature of this literature review has revealed possibilities for future research.
