Book excerpt: An analytical investigation of the response of a circular cylindrical shell in plane strain acted upon by arbitrary, nonaxisymmetric, time dependent normal surface tractions was carried out. Solutions were generated for three levels of shell theory: (a) membrane theory, (B) Flugge theory (combined bending and membrane effects), (c) improved theory (including the effects of shear deformation and rotatory inertia). The solutions are expressed in terms of the characteristic response predicted by each theory. Finite series approximations are used to determine the characteristic response to any desired degree of accuracy. A numerical study of the initial response of the shell to a radially directed, concentrated, pure impulse was performed and detailed comparisons between the three shell theories are presented. Book excerpt: The equations of motion for large deformation of a thin elastic cyl ndrical shell are derived and simplified to a form second order theory which is adequate for investigating the dynamic stability of the shell. A review of linear vibrations is presented. The response of a cylindrical shell to a uniform impulsive pressure is investigated. It is found that the circular mode of vibration, which is the basic response of the shell, may be unstable, the shell going over into bending modes of vibration. A criterion is established for predicting the bending modes excited. It is shown that the type of instability involved corresponds to what is known as autoparametric excitation in non-linear oscillations. Uniform impulsive pressure of sufficient magnitude to cause inward plastic flow is considered. The analysis is carried out for a stress-strain relation which includes purely viscous, viscoplastic, and linear strain hardening materials as special cases. It is shown that a series of wrinkles develop around the circumference as the shell flows inward. The wrinkling arises from magnification of the irregularities in the initial radial velocity due to the compressive membrane force in the shell. (Author).

The method applies the USA-STAGS code which utilizes the finite element method for the structural analysis and the Doubly Asymptotic Approximation (DAA) for the fluid-structure interaction. The calculations are compared to an exact analysis for two separate loadings: a plane step wave and an exponentially decaying plane wave. The results of the comparisons are within six percent of the exact solution; a fact that supports the applicability of USA-STAGS for fluid- structure interaction problems.
