And every design starts with a problem that a designer or team of designers seeks to solve. In this book, Bill Burnett and Dave Evans show us how design thinking can help us create a life that is both meaningful and fulfilling, regardless of who or where we are, what we do or have done for a living, or how young or old we are. Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Academics have used posters to share research for more than five decades, and tens of thousands of posters are presented at conferences every year. Despite the popularity of the format, no in-depth guide has been available on how to create and deliver compelling conference posters. From over-long titles, tiny text and swarms of logos, to bad font choices, chaotic colour schemes and blurry images – it’s easy to leave viewers confused about your poster’s message. The solution is Better Posters: a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know – from writing a title and submitting an abstract, to designing the poster and finally presenting it in the poster session. Your conference poster will be one of your first research outputs, and the poster session is your first introduction to a professional community. Making a great poster develops the skills to create publications, reports, outreach and teaching materials throughout your career. This book also has material for conference organizers on how to make a better poster session for their attendees.

In her New York Times Bestseller, Wealthy by Design, Kimberly Foss offers the insight and tools you need to confidently design a sound investment plan that empowers you to make your own choices. By outlining the five, foundational principles of investing, Kimberly prepares readers to map their course with conviction and integrity. Drawing on her vast career of advising clients from all financial backgrounds, as well as her own rise from humble beginnings, Kimberly frames her advice around powerful and enlightening stories — and through them, you will learn how to leverage personality, situation and belief, while applying proven wealth-building strategies to fulfill your needs and dreams for the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The statesman and reformer James Oglethorpe was a significant figure in the philosophical and political landscape of eighteenth-century British America. His social contributions—all informed by Enlightenment ideals—included prison reform, the founding of the Georgia Colony on behalf of the "worthy poor," and stirring the founders of the abolitionist movement. He also developed the famous ward design for the city of Savannah, a design that became one of the most important planning innovations in American history. Multilayered and connecting the urban core to peripheral garden and farm lots, the Oglethorpe Plan was intended by its author to both exhibit and foster his utopian ideas of agrarian equality. In his new book, the professional planner Thomas D. Wilson reconsiders the Oglethorpe Plan, revealing that Oglethorpe was a more dynamic force in urban planning than has generally been supposed. In essence, claims Wilson, the Oglethorpe Plan offers a portrait of the Enlightenment, and embodies all of the major themes of that era, including science, humanism, and secularism. The vibrancy of the ideas behind its conception invites an exploration of the plan's enduring qualities. In addition to surveying historical context and intellectual origins, this book aims to rescue Oglethorpe’s work from its relegation to the status of a living museum in a revered historic district, and to demonstrate instead how modern-day town planners might employ its principles. Unique in its exclusive focus on the topic and written in a clear and readable style, The Oglethorpe Plan explores this design as a bridge between New Urbanism and other more naturally evolving and socially engaged modes of urban development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empowered Design is about creating the life you are meant to live starting from the inside out. Design is all-encompassing; from creating a passionate plan for life, to your personal space supporting your energy. Let's face it, Designers are like therapists and we are the go-to people for our clients, not only for style but for life advice. Well, it takes hard work and determination to live your best life! Design has been my life for over twenty years, and I realized that designing the life we are meant to live is connected to the space we live in. My book is about creating a passionate plan that will start with figuring out what direction will empower you and not drain you. It's important to understand the difference between the white noise that creates fear, and the fear that tells you that you're on the right track. Fear doesn't scream at you, it whispers most of the time. Everyone is afraid of anything worth doing, but how you react to that fear can be a game changer. One way that I can tell the difference between the two is if I were to imagine I was given the same opportunity that I was afraid of, except this time I was guaranteed that I could not fail. Would you still want to do it? You see, knowing the difference between how your feelings and your body reacts to different situations is at the core of fine tuning your barometer. You can't make the right decisions if you don't know the difference between the feeling of the right road or the wrong road. It seems so simple, but you would be surprised at how much people make decisions that they think are right, but really, they just chose the less scary and easy route. I'm not inventing the wheel, but I am infusing a lot of old world knowledge and common sense with my own stories of how I moved past obstacles, and how I'm still pushing past the obstacles that get in my way. I think that it's really easy to let the experiences in your life define your life. When life gives you obstacles, you need to use them as your own stepping stones. I am a fusion of Interior Design and Energy Design, and so my book will be a fusion of the two, that make up what I call Empowered Design. Now most of us know what Interior Design is, but I'm sure you're wondering what in God's name Energy Design is. And no I'm not referring to "GREEN" or Energy Efficient Design. I refer to Energy Design as the Designing of the emotional and non-physical space that surrounds you or that affects you on a daily basis. It's about taking your emotional pulse so that you can make choices that will build you up, and not bring you down. This calls for self-awareness, where you step away from yourself enough to be the watcher instead of the reactor. I have made a commitment to live my life on purpose, and I believe that I can show readers that there are no boundaries to achieving great personal success. It looks different to all of us and it's what makes your space and your journey unique. The life we are all meant to live is as much about how you feel, to what your space looks like when you wake up in the morning. It's as simple as if your house is cluttered then your brain feels cluttered. So I ask you, does your space feel authentic and does it support who you are? But I guess a better question to ask yourself is "Does your life feel authentic to who you are and who you want to be?" If the answer isn't a hard "YES" then we've got work to do!

Book excerpt: CItyMaker presents a method and a set of tools to generate alternative solutions for an urban context. The method proposes the use of a combined set of design patterns encoding typical design moves used by urban designers. The combination of patterns generates different layouts which can be adjusted by manipulating several parameters in relation to updated urban indicators. The patterns were developed from observation of typical urban design procedures, first encoded as discursive grammars and later translated into parametric design patterns. The CItyMaker method and tools allows the designer to compose a design solution from a set of programmatic premises and fine-tune it by pulling parameters whilst checking the changes in urban indicators. These tools improve the designer's awareness of the consequences of their design moves.
