Book Synopsis From Lead Mines to Gold Fields by : Henry Taylor
Download or read book From Lead Mines to Gold Fields written by Henry Taylor and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-11 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Taylor's long life (1825-1931) gave him an unusual perspective on change in American society. During his lifetime, the West was largely settled. America fought wars with Mexico and Spain, was nearly torn apart by a civil conflict, and then joined allies across the sea in World War I. Inventions proliferated (trains, cars, airplanes, to name a few), and twenty-six presidents served in office. Taylor's life also exemplifies the mobile American lifestyle. His family moved several times before he left the lead mines of Wisconsin for the gold fields of California during the early 1850s. Taylor's account of his journey across the western continent in search of fortune provides an arresting and detailed look at the dangers of the trail. His account of his move to western Nebraska in 1878 offers insight into the problems and successes of the early homesteaders and settlers. The latter portions of the autobiography concern his later travels and his reflections on his long life. With wit and a keen sense of character, Taylor began to record his life story when he was 80 and completed it at the age of 103. Donald L. Parman has organized and annotated Taylor's story, supplying an introduction and information on people, places, and events in the text.

Book Synopsis Burs Under the Saddle by : Ramon Frederick Adams
Download or read book Burs Under the Saddle written by Ramon Frederick Adams and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This immense book, by a noted bibliographer of the West, is beyond question the fairest, most complete and most learned evaluation of printed references to western outlaws to appear until now....It will stand for many years, solid as a rock amid the flooding maelstrom of western myth and legend, pointing up the truth about those men of the past who lived by their wits and their guns. It will be impossible for anyone studying that era and such men to do so without reference to this volume."—Los Angeles Times "Adams turns again to the books and histories of the western gunmen and outlaws and critically examines 425 titles, most of which rate as ’burs’ under his saddle. Ramon Adams’ plea is that the writers must stop compounding each other’s errors into legend. In this book, with great skill and without malice, he has pointed out past mistakes. His book should be in the essential baggage of every writer on western outlaws and on every library shelf."—American West "The value of this book to writers and historians of the badman tradition cannot be overestimated, for Adams has replaced rumors, myths, and falsehoods with documented historical facts. It is a book for all conscientious students of and writers on the American West; henceforth, any writer of ’authentic Western history’ who refuses to check with Adams should be, as the judge said to Billy the Kid in one legend, 'hanged by the neck until dead, dead, dead.'"—Southwest Review

Book Synopsis Nebraska Courthouses by : Oliver B. Pollak
Download or read book Nebraska Courthouses written by Oliver B. Pollak and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: County courthouses stand at the center of Nebraska local government. Their authority in the state extends over hundreds of square miles with county populations ranging from less than a thousand to nearly half a million. The activities taking place within these buildings range from storing vital statistics, such as birth and death certificates, to hosting the trials of common criminals and not-so-common "crimes of the century." Using over 235 photographs, Nebraska Courthouses vividly describes the architectural and political evolution of the courthouse. Often in the early years of Nebraska statehood war nearly broke out in these courthouses as county formation saw spirited battles to become the county seat. Today, the courthouse remains the center of community pride, anchoring the downtown of each county seat. Courthouses contain the offices of elected officials and county staff. In this volume you will see the places where judges, lawyers, the County Attorney, social workers, librarians, janitors, and other individuals that make government work.
