Book Synopsis N* Physics - Proceedings Of The Fourth Cebaf/int Workshop by : Harry Tsung-shung Lee

This book was released on 1997-06-27 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been well recognized that the study of the excitations of the nucleon can shed light on the nonperturbative aspects of QCD. New opportunities for such study will be opened in the next few years with the commissioning of experiments in Hall B of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). Photo- and electroproduction studies of single and double pions, rhos, omegas, and kaons will be conducted with unprecedented precision. The Hall B CLAS detector is a major step forward, promising to provide kinematically complete measurements of cross sections and spin observables. The task of extracting new insights from such detailed measurements will require close coordination between experimental and theoretical physicists. To help optimize this interface between theory and experiment, a joint CEBAF/INT workshop was held at the Institute of Nuclear Theory in Seattle, September 9-13, 1996. The foci of the 1996 workshop included: N → N∗ transition form factors as predicted by QCD-inspired models and their experimental consequences; theoretical techniques employing QCD sum rules, perturbative QCD, and lattice QCD; reaction theories of photo- and electro-production of mesons; theoretical issues in the eta meson, vector meson, and two-pion production channels; progress in developing amplitude analyses for the available and expected data; the relationship between the Hall B program and those of other new experimental facilities. This proceeding will serve readers as both a current perspective on the field and a guide to future experimental and theoretical research directions.

Book Synopsis Nontopological Solitons by : Lawrence Wilets
Download or read book Nontopological Solitons written by Lawrence Wilets and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful modeling of quantum chromodynamics with a relativistic quark-soliton field theory has been developed over the past decade. As introduced by R Freidberg and T D Lee, the foundation of the model involves the chromodielectric properties of the physical vacuum, which yield absolute color confinement. The model allows for the consistent calculation of the dynamics of hadrons and hadronic reactions. The book summarizes and expands upon the extensive literature on the subject, concentrating on the Friedberg-Lee model and variations thereof. New results and future directions are included. Theory, mathematical methods and numerical results are emphasized.

Book Synopsis Surprises in Theoretical Physics by : Rudolf Ernst Peierls
Download or read book Surprises in Theoretical Physics written by Rudolf Ernst Peierls and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1979-11-21 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems in theoretical physics often lead to paradoxical answers; yet closer reasoning and a more complete analysis invariably lead to the resolution of the paradox and to a deeper understanding of the physics involved. Drawing primarily from his own experience and that of his collaborators, Sir Rudolf Peierls selects examples of such "surprises" from a wide range of physical theory, from quantum mechanical scattering theory to the theory of relativity, from irreversibility in statistical mechanics to the behavior of electrons in solids. By studying such surprises and learning what kind of possibilities to look for, he suggests, scientists may be able to avoid errors in future problems. In some cases the surprise is that the outcome of a calculation is contrary to what physical intuition seems to demand. In other instances an approximation that looks convincing turns out to be unjustified, or one that looks unreasonable turns out to be adequate. Professor Peierls does not suggest, however, that theoretical physics is a hazardous game in which one can never foresee the surprises a detailed calculation might reveal. Rather, he contends, all the surprises discussed have rational explanations, most of which are very simple, at least in principle. This book is based on the author's lectures at the University of Washington in the spring of 1977 and at the Institut de Physique Nucleaire, University de Paris-Sud, Orsay, during the winter of 1977-1978.

Book Synopsis The Nuclear Shell Model by : Kris L.G. Heyde
Download or read book The Nuclear Shell Model written by Kris L.G. Heyde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at enabling the reader to obtain a working knowledge of the nuclear shell model and to understand nuclear structure within the framework of the shell model. Attention is concentrated on a coherent, self-contained exposition of the main ideas behind the model with ample illustrations to give an idea beyond formal exposition of the concepts. Since this text grew out of a course taught for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students in theoretical nuclear physics, the accents are on a detailed exposition of the material with step-by-step derivations rather than on a superficial description of a large number of topics. In this sense, the book differs from a number of books on theoretical nuclear physics by narrowing the subject to only the nuclear shell model. Most of the expressions used in many of the existing books treating the nuclear shell model are derived here in more detail, in a practitioner's way. Due to frequent student requests I have expanded of detail in order to take away the typical phrase " . . . after some the level simple and straightforward algebra one finds . . . ". The material could probably be treated in a one-year course (implying going through the problem sets and setting up a number of numerical studies by using the provided computer codes). The book is essentially self-contained but requires an introductory course on quantum mechanics and nuclear physics on a more general level.
