Book excerpt: Is it better to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth or a hunger in your belly? Is life in the city better than life in the country? Is life in the new world really better than life in old Europe? Is private education better than public? Is a university degree compulsory to success in life?. What exactly is a better life? Affluence does not guarantee happiness and poverty does not guarantee misery and regardless of inherent socio-economic standing a kind or cruel bounce at the right or wrong moment can be life-changing. Strong parental love and guidance ultimately trump actual money but the latter does make further education more readily available and that generally opens up more opportunities in the modern world. My wife and I had no post-secondary education and loved our upbringing yet we strived very hard to make sure our children did have university degrees and a shot at that better life. I hope the joyful if sometimes embarrassing memoirs of a Scottish working class boy, combined with a good deal of social history and the many quirks of the common language which my native and adopted countries allegedly share, can amuse and inform.

Book excerpt: SHORT, BACK & SIDES: AN UNOFFICIAL AND GENERALLY ANECDOTAL HISTORY OF BURNHAM CAMP FROM 1923 TO 1973 opens up to readers the experience of the many New Zealanders who were introduced to army life at Burnham Camp. It traces the development of Burham Camp, and looks at the history of the wider Burnham community. It also gathers together insightful and entertaining anecdotes that are, with the passing of time, all too frequently lost to the historical record, with many of the stories in written form for the first time. Some well-known figures appear in the book - including a forthright young recruit by the name of Charles Upham. This book will appeal in particular to all those who have served at Burnham Camp, their relatives, students of Canterbury history and all those interested in the history of the New Zealand Army and the impact military service had on New Zealand life in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will give learners of English the confidence to address people appropriately in a wide variety of situations. It will also help them to understand what is implied when an English speaker uses a particular way of addressing someone. These topics are entirely neglected in most courses and textbooks, and there is no other reference work on the subject. Anyone who is fascinated by words will also find much here of interest. A wealth of historical, sociological and etymological information is set out in a highly readable style. Some 2,000 entries arranged in alphabetical order shed new light on familiar terms of address and present many curiosities. The author gives examples from a wide range of literature, particularly twentieth century novels, and provides an illuminating commentary on them.

Book excerpt: Over the past four decades the fear of crime has become an increasingly significant concern for criminologists, victimologists, policy makers, politicians, police, the media and the general public. For many practitioners reducing fear of crime has become almost as important an issue as reducing crime itself. The identification of fear of crime as a serious policy problem has given rise to a massive amount of research activity, political discussion and intellectual debate. Despite this activity, actually reducing levels of fear of crime has proved difficult. Even in recent years when many western nations have experienced reductions in the levels of reported crime, fear of crime has often proven intractable. The result has been the development of what amounts to a fear of crime industry. Previous studies have identified conceptual challenges, theoretical cul-de-sacs and methodological problems with the use of the concept fear of crime. Yet it has endured as both an organizing principal for a body of research and a term to describe a social malady. This provocative, wide ranging book asks how and why fear of crime retains this cultural, political and social scientific currency despite concerted criticism of its utility? It subjects the concept to rigorous critical scrutiny taking examples from the UK, North America and Australia. Part One of Inventing Fear of Crime traces the historical emergence of the fear of crime concept, while Part Two addresses the issue of fear of crime and political rationality, and analyses fear of crime as a tactic or technique of government. This book will be essential reading on one of the key issues in government and politics in contemporary society.
