A total of 7949 lbs of uranium was treated in two series of tests, the average conversion to ammonium uranous fluoride being 96.8 per cent. The reagent cost including an allowance for uranium losses in the process was found to be 32.4 cents per lb of treated uranium, and with further modifications, a cost of 28 cents per lb is envisaged.

Book excerpt: 1050 lbs of uranium were treated in the pilot plant. 4 runs were conducted; the maximum throughput was approximately 7 1/2 lbs U/hr at 90 degrees C, which was only 50 per cent of the design capacity. This capacity was based on the results of small scale tests in a glass column. It is probable that short circuiting in the pilot plant reactor resulted in decreased throughput capacity. The sodium uranous fluoride produced contained approximately twice as much NaF as is indicated by the formula UF4.NaF. Both chemical and X-ray diffraction analysis showed the product to consist mainly of 2NaF.UF4. This material, containing only 59 to 60 per cent U, was unsuitable for calciothermic reduction to uranium metal. Undesirable endothermic reactions, thought to be caused by the excessive amount of sodium fluoride present, led to the formation of sodium metal in large quantities, and also limited the reaction temperature, thus preventing fusion and separation of massive uranium metal.

Book excerpt: Ammonium uranous fluoride (UF4.NH4F) was precipitated from a solution containing uranyl nitrate (UO2(NO3)2), ammonium fluoride (NH4F) and formic acid (HCOOH) by the introduction of sulphur dioxide (SO2). Laboratory tests showed that at elevated temperatures the rate of precipitation of UF4.NH4F was constant and largely dependent on the initial HCOOH concentration. The constant driving force during the reaction was attributed to the continuous regeneration of an active reducing agent, and a reaction mechanism based on regeneration in a formic acid - formaldehyde sulphoxylate system was proposed. The practical advantages of lowering reagent costs, by using the regenerated reducing agent remaining in the depleted solution after the uranium had been precipitated, were demonstrated. Pilot plant tests showed that it was possible to produce a product of nuclear grade purity after having overcome severe corrosion problems. Book excerpt: Pilot plant experiments are described in which trichloroethylene was used for the reduction of uranium hexafluoride to uranium tetrafluoride. After unsatisfactory preliminary results with liquid phase reduction, satisfactory results were obtained with a vapor phase reduction system. It was found that vapor phase reduction at approximately 450 deg F, produced a low density product which contained only small quantities of uranium(VI); sintering the uranium tetrafluoride in a hydrogen fluoride atmosphere increased the product density to approximately 3 g/cc. The reduction was essentially complete, and the effluent gas contained less than 1 ppm of uranium hexafluoride. The purity of the uranium tetrafluoride produced was equivalent to that of the uranium hexafluoride used as feed. A complete discussion is given of the operation of the various parts of the system. Book excerpt: Test quantities of thoria (aporoximately 3800 lb of thorium oxide and 3200 lb of mixed thorium-uranium oxide) were prepared during FY-1960 for members of the Reactor Experimental Engineering Division (REED). For preparation of thorium oxide, the calcination temperature was varied from 650 to 1800 deg C. The surface area of the fired oxide ranged from 0.5 to 25 m/sup 2//g and the mean particle size ranged from 1 to 8 microns. For preparation of mixed thorium-- uranium oxide, the calcination temperature was varied from 1050 to 1225 deg C. The mixed oxide contained either 0.5, 3.0, or 8.0 wt.% of uranium as requested with a mean particle size of 1.5 microns. The over-all losses of thorium and uranium were 19.4 and 18.3%, re spectively. Four 1400 lb batches of thorium nitrate were dissolved to prepare solutions containing 300 to 350 g/liter of thorium for solvent extraction studies in the Chemical Technolcgy Division and 2100 lb of dry, recovered waste thorium oxide was supplied to the ORNL Fuel Cycle Program.
