Book excerpt: Formed in 1814, Pike County was originally comprised of the townships of Middle Smithfield, Delaware, Upper Smithfield, Lackawaxen, and Palmyra. As years passed, other townshipsA were added and some of the names changed, and today Pike County consists of 13 townships and boroughs. Even before Pike County was formed, the stories of the people, land, and events wove an intricate tale. The early daredevils who rafted lumber to Trenton and Philadelphia, using the Delaware River as their byway, were a rough?and?tumble bunch. As time went on, these mavericks gave way to new ones and the stories of entrepreneurs, trendsetters, great men and women, and fascinating events were etched into the countyas history. Using vintage photographs from the Pike County Historical Societyas archives, Pike County chronicles the people and stories that make this area unique.

Book excerpt: Nestled between the Pine Mountains and plentiful Flint River, Pike County and its county seat were named after army general and adventurer Zebulon Pike. Early settlers, as adventurous and independent as the county's famed namesake explorer, built homes and raised families extending for generations in the gently rolling acres of central Georgia. Many residents became well known across the state. Austin Dabney, freed slave and Revolutionary War hero, supported the white family who nursed him to health after a crippling battle wound. Journalist Jacques "Jackie" Futrelle became a famous novelist and playwright before losing his life on the Titanic. After training World War I pilots, early aviator Doug Davis returned home to build the first hangar at Atlanta's airport, to make countless barnstorming trips, and to win early racing and aerobatic competitions. Generations of men and women raised families and worked in the fields, orchards, turkey farms, country groceries, and busy canneries, cotton gins, and packing plants. Some served in the military or carried on family traditions like the Jugtown potters. From Indian trails, stagecoach stops, and train depots to paved highways and Zebulon's Crazy Eight Track, Pike County's history is quite a journey.

This Centennial day brings evidence to us of the wisdom and foresight of the Fathers of this National Government. How proud we all should and do feel that we are one illustrious, powerful nation, and not divided into jealous, intriguing states; as a people, free as the air we breathe, we are yet bound with the cords of Nationality to the great idea of our Fathers. Expressed by a Patriot. The Union, one and inseparable. Free as to all our indi vidual rights and with no encroachment upon our rights as citizens of Illinois, or of any other State Subject to the universal law of civilization, which requires restraint on the actions of individuals, in furtherance and protection of the general good of our fellow men. Long may we love, cherish and protect our United States, and love with our hearts' devotion the Flag of our Fathers, the emblem of our great and glorious nation, renowned to earth's remotest bounds. The office of historian for this occasion was conferred by the Committee, appointed by a meeting, as will be seen by the published report thereof, to be annexed to the proceedings of this day.
