Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the biography of a contested memory, how it was born, grew, changed the world, and was changed by it. It's the story of the story of how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began. Joseph Smith, the church's founder, remembered that his first audible prayer, uttered in spring of 1820 when he was about fourteen, was answered with a vision of heavenly beings. Appearing to the boy in the woods near his parents' home in western New York State, they told Smith that he was forgiven and warned him that Christianity had gone astray. Smith created a rich and controversial historical record by narrating and documenting this event repeatedly. In First Vision, Steven C. Harper shows how Latter-day Saints (beginning with Joseph Smith) and others have remembered this experience and rendered it meaningful. When and why and how did Joseph Smith's first vision, as saints know the event, become their seminal story? What challenges did it face along the way? What changes did it undergo as a result? Can it possibly hold its privileged position against the tides of doubt and disbelief, memory studies, and source criticism-all in the information age? Steven C. Harper tells the story of how Latter-day Saints forgot and then remembered accounts of Smith's experience and how Smith's 1838 account was redacted and canonized. He explores the dissonance many saints experienced after discovering multiple accounts of Smith's experience. He describes how, for many, the dissonance has been resolved by a reshaped collective memory.

Book excerpt: I Put My Feelings in Everyone We never know when, what or where we may be when something will influence us to make changes or try something new to bring out a hidden talent The experiences we have had during our time create and expand our thoughts and how we think with our mind It was a late hot August day in the year of 2002. I received a sad phone call from a good friend, Randy (Rudy) who called to tell me about Jamie (Jamies Song) passing away. I could tell by his voice he was hurting. Something told me to write him a song to make him feel better. I had never written before, but when I started, it seemed so easy, as if it was something I was supposed to do in this life. It only took about an hour and a half to finish. One thing I believe that has helped me is I stopped watching television, none at all, around five years ago. That has let me open my mind to new ideas about what is real in this life. We all have a purpose for why we are here, and it is up to us to take time to discover what it may be. This life is real, not practice for another time. None of us can recycle a wasted day. I enjoyed writing so much I have never stopped I hope you enjoy reading the pieces I have included in this my first published book, and that they touch your feelings, emotions and thoughts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since his professional debut in 1962, Stevie Wonder has recorded sixty-four singles that have made the Billboard top 100, including ten that reached number one. Wonder was one of the first Motown artists to have complete control over the writing, arranging, and recording of his songs, and achieved that stature before he was 20 years old. He has won 17 Grammy awards, was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and earned the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. Equally important, his work as a producer, arranger, and instrumentalist on other artists' recordings has put him in the highest rank of musical collaborators. This is the first work of criticism on this important documentarian of American life, as well as the introductory volume in The Praeger Singer-Songwriter Collection. Through a combination of biography and critical analysis, James Perone's groundbreaking new book reveals the many ways in which Stevie Wonder's body of work emerged, developed, reflected its time, and influenced myriad other artists. After revealing the social, cultural, and political context of Wonder's work, the book provides detailed analysis of his compositions and recordings, with a focus on both his well-known songs and those known only to his hardcore fans. The volume also contains discussions of cover versions of Wonder's compositions, a discography of his recordings, a song title index, an annotated bibliography, and a general index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 163 reflections on a new vision of consciousness, On My Mind by Steve Perrin is based on 30 years of personal introspection. Perrin develops a model of his conscious and unconscious mind emphasizing the role of the self in moderating between perception and action. The mind, he says, answers three questions: 1) What's happening?, 2) What does it mean to me?, and 3) What should I do? He develops the idea that consciousness consists of looping engagements between perception, action, and the world on the far side of our senses, forming a continuous loop moderated by consciousness. Disparities between expectations and resulting perceptions are what arouses consciousness to intercede between perception and action. If we are not aroused, we settle for unconscious bouts of mimicry, ritual, routines, habits, and fixed beliefs to govern our behavior. On My Mind ends with a chapter putting forth suggestions toward a theory of mind.

Book excerpt: As humans charge up the steep slope of technological innovation, digital age media increasingly shapes our perception of everything--even spiritual matters. The next stage of spiritual development may be the product of a digital interface between our own image of the divine, virtual reality technology that produces real perceptions, and with devices that stimulate areas of the brain associated with spiritual experience. This book explores the influence of digital media on spirituality and the impact of the digital environment on our experience of the spiritual world. The author predicts a future in which digital technology and neuroscience will combine to create a new understanding of the divine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cuba’s José Lezama Lima became the most controversial figure in the flowering of the Latin American novel with the 1966 publication of Paradiso. Hailed as a seminal writer of breathtaking originality by Julio Cortázar, Octavio Paz, and Mario Vargas Llosa, Lezama was also attacked by the Castro regime and others for his stylistic obscurity, erotic descriptions, and violation of literary norms. Indeed, his experimental fiction, written on the very boundaries of the novelistic genre, resists classification. José Lezama Lima’s Joyful Vision, a much-needed critical study of Paradiso, Oppiano Licario, and Lezama’s essays, is thus an exploration in reading, one that highlights and preserves the essential and persistent contradictions in Lezama’s theory and practice of literature. Gustavo Pellón focuses his study on Lezama’s search for equilibrium, clarifying such oppositions in Lezama’s writings as the mystical quest for illumination through obscurity, the calculated cultivation of naïveté, the Proust-like fascination with yet ultimate condemnation of homosexuality, and a modernist (even postmodernist) narrative style that conveys a mystical (essentially medieval) worldview. Above all, Pellón shares his wonder at Lezama who, in an age of pessimism, maintained his joyful vision of art and existence.
