Book excerpt: Inos Biffi and illustrator Franco Vignazia take readers through the liturgical year, introducing the celebrations of each season, beginning with Advent and ending with the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. On each page, readers will find intriguing imagery and enlightening explanations that reveal the scriptural roots of our observances and immerse readers in the rich symbolism of the Church's calendar--an annual revolution around the meaning of Christ's Paschal Mystery. Far more than informative, this book provides a visual and poetic reflection on the spiritual depths of the seasons and special feasts.

Book Synopsis Landscape as Longing by : Frank Gohlke
Download or read book Landscape as Longing written by Frank Gohlke and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, Frank Gohlke and Joel Sternfeld were commissioned to photograph one of the densest concentrations of ethnic diversity in the world, the borough of Queens in New York City. After more than a year of photographing everything from corner bodegas to the borough's boundaries, Gohlke and Sternfeld had not only captured the complicated dy - namic that sustains Queens and its myriad communities; they had also evolved a unique theory of landscape photography in which landscape is a visible manifestation of the invisible emotions of its inhabitants. The collection inherits the strength of each photographer's eye. Gohlke's Queens consists of streets, houses, fences, gardens, parklands, shorelines, and waste spaces, the terri - tory where human arrangement contends endlessly with the forces that undo it: unruly vegetation, weather, rot, decay, and the "creative destruction" of a voracious commercial culture. Sternfeld focuses on the indigenous shops, restau - rants, mosques and temples that make a walk in Queens feel like a walk in Thailand, India or Peru-or all of them at once. Often tucked into homes or converted factories, these plac - es signify a home country, or perhaps a home country that exists more in the mind than in actuality. In conjunction with an essay by the acclaimed writer Suketu Mehta, this book is a powerful instrument for understand - ing a landscape that seems to defy interpretation. Gohlke and Sternfeld successfully make the dizzying patchwork of Queens accessible and visible.
Download or read book Men and Bears written by AA.VV. and published by Accademia University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time of Carnival represents a “wild” time at the end of winter and pointing to the beginning of a new season. It is characterized by the irruption of border figures, animal masks, characters which recall the world of the dead and which bring within themselves the germ of a vital force, of the energy that produces the reawakening of nature and announces the growth and fertility of the new crops. This wild domain shows itself under the shapes of a contiguity between human and animal: the costumes, the masks, refer to a world in which the characteristics of the human and those of the animal are fused and intertwined. Among these figures, in particular, emerge those of the Wild Man, the human being who takes on animal-like attributes and aspects, and of the Bear, the animal that, more than all the others, gets as close as possible to the human and seems to reflect a deformed image of it. Such symbolic images come from far off times and places to tell a story that belongs to our common origins. The bear assumes attributes and functions alike in very different cultural contexts, such as the Sámi of Finland or North-American hunter-gatherers, and represents a boundary between the world of nature and the human world, between the domain of animals and the difficult construction of humanity: a process continued for centuries, perhaps millennia, and which cannot still be said complete.

Book Synopsis Mozarabs, Hispanics and Cross by : Gomez-Ruiz, Raul
Download or read book Mozarabs, Hispanics and Cross written by Gomez-Ruiz, Raul and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veneration of the Cross plays a major role in Hispanic popular religion. But for the Mozarabs, a Catholic community that traces its roots to the Visigoths and Hispano-Romans of seventh-century Spain, veneration of the Cross--particularly the Lignum Crucis, a relic of the ""True Cross""--has served to join devotion to Christ with a powerful symbol of religio-ethnic identity and survival in the face of persecution. The Mozarabs (the term may mean ""Arabized"") of Toledo maintained their Catholic identity through the period of Islamic rule. After the Christian reconquest of Spain and the imposition of uniform Roman liturgical rites, they clung tightly to their own Mozarabic Rite, which is still recognized and celebrated today.

Book Synopsis The Book Trade in the Italian Renaissance by : Angela Nuovo
Download or read book The Book Trade in the Italian Renaissance written by Angela Nuovo and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers the first English-language survey of the book industry in Renaissance Italy. Whereas traditional accounts of the book in the Renaissance celebrate authors and literary achievement, this study examines the nuts and bolts of a rapidly expanding trade that built on existing economic practices while developing new mechanisms in response to political and religious realities. Approaching the book trade from the perspective of its publishers and booksellers, this archive-based account ranges across family ambitions and warehouse fires to publishers' petitions and convivial bookshop conversation. In the process it constructs a nuanced picture of trading networks, production, and the distribution and sale of printed books, a profitable but capricious commodity. Originally published in Italian as Il commercio librario nell’Italia del Rinascimento (Milan: Franco Angeli, 1998; second, revised ed., 2003), this present English translation has not only been updated but has also been deeply revised and augmented.
