Book excerpt: Like Rembrandt's great engravings in the 17th century, Picasso produced some of the most powerful engraving work of the 20th century thanks to his expressive and inventive richness. The Suite Vollard is a central part of his engraving output. Made up of a hundred engravings, it symbolizes the quintessence of printmaking techniques. This daring series, created in the 1930s for the Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard, made engraving an art form in its own right, on a par with painting, during the period preceding the iconic painting Guernica and the subsequent development of the themes of the artist's personal mythology. Vollard's premature death in 1939 left a question mark over his intentions for the work that he commissioned Picasso to produce. This Suite Vollard, which is preserved in the collections of the National Picasso Museum in Paris, comes from the print proofs signed by Picasso, printed from 1937 onward by the master printer Roger Lacourière. The whole set is now on display for the first time. Only a small circle of international museums (the National Picasso Museum in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the MoMA in New York, and the British Museum in London) preserve it in its entirety.

Annotation Supplied by Informazioni Editoriali

Sung suggests that Blake revised and corrected his work more than was previously thought. This belies the Romantic ideal that the acts of conception and execution are simultaneous in the creative process.

Book excerpt: The National Gallery of Australia is one of a few select galleries around the world fortunate to own a complete set of 100 etchings, engravings and aquatints known as the Vollard Suite, made by one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso. The Vollard Suite contains several themes that were close to Picasso¿s heart, in particular the classically derived subjects of the Minotaur (the man-beast) and Pygmalion (the artist obsessed with his model). Featuring illustrations of each of the 100 works, this publication reveals the fascinating story behind this extremely rare, celebrated set of prints.

Book excerpt: Picasso's interest in ceramics arose briefly at the turn of the century and later, between 1945 and 1973, ran parallel to, sculpture, and engraving. In his sixties, Picasso tackled ceramics again, attracted by the material's potential, by the way its plastic properties allowed him to adapt it to his imagination. A number of skilled ceramists lived near his home in Vallauris, including the Ramie family, whose Madoura workshop produced the vast majority of the Spanish artist's work. This volume presents 61 ceramic pieces by Picasso that range from unfired clay to ceramics fired at high temperature and porcelain decorated with paint and enamel. All of the works are illustrated in color, including plates, dishes, vases, bottles, and zoomorphic jugs; wall, floor, roof tiles, and fragments of brick handled and metamorphosed by the artist's hand. Also included are pieces that are sculptures in their own right. Some items are enameled or painted, others incised or engraved, while the function of still others was transformed through the magical power of the artist. Picasso succeeded in giving Mediterranean ceramics new impetus, in tune bot his genius and 20th century art.

But there are basic laws of self-expression which do not change, which are perpetual because they accord with the structure of the human mind and soul." These penetrating studies explore the deep psychological and formal affinities between defining figures of their epochs—from Giotto and Dante through Picasso—and illuminate ways that artists and thinkers encounter the world and translate it through the unique language of imagination. The principal sections of this important book are: ·Giotto and Dante ·Picasso, Painter and Engraver ·Giotto and Picasso ·The Condition of Modern Art and Thought
