This is of great concern to forest industry in British Columbia but it has provided a rare opportunity to study genetic variation of lodgepole pine defense mechanisms against MPB. Based on a previous study, we selected 45 open-pollinated families from a population of 180 families, with the number of trees per family ranging from 16-26 (for a total of 887 trees) from two 20-year field tests which had undergone attack from MPB. Chemical and physical defensive responses were quantified in response to simulated attack by the MPB fungal complex on these 45 families. These responses included: physical exudation of resin, host compartmentalization response to fungal inoculation, and levels of constitutive and induced resin terpenoids. Further assessments were made for tree height, DBH (diameter at breast height ~1.4 m), bark texture, tree mortality, and MPB presence, attack density, reproduction, and brood development, as well as the presence of hypersensitivity reactions by the tree to MPB."--P. iii.

Book excerpt: Forest mortality triggers both immediate and long term changes to water, energy, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling, but ecosystem-scale feedbacks between aboveground and belowground biogeochemical cycling, microbial biomass, and quality of substrate are poorly understood. This dissertation investigates impacts of beetle-induced ( Dendroctonus ponderosae ) lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia ) forest mortality on soil C pools and fluxes. The study was conducted for a period of five years (2008-2012) in the Medicine Bow National Forest in Wyoming, USA. Treatment sites included four mature stands with different infestation histories (infested in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and uninfested control). Our results suggest that beetle infestation significantly alters forest structure causing more than 80% stand mortality. As mortality increases, water uptake declines, which, in combination with a pulse of needle fall causes the increase in forest floor C biomass (Oi and Oe horizons). Meanwhile, microbial biomass (especially microbial biomass nitrogen) responds within two years following beetle infestation, likely promoted by increased soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization and recovery of understory vegetation. Key environmental factors that influence changes in C pools and fluxes are soil moisture, monthly precipitation and daily maximum photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). These factors contribute to the regulation of plant growth and productivity, soil biogeochemistry, and plant-soil interactions. Combining soil biogeochemistry with remote sensing techniques will make further important contributions to precise quantification of C budgets at a regional scale and more robust parameterization of regional/global ecosystem modeling.

These outbreaks may increase in either duration or intensity in the future as climate change progresses and will impact timber and recreational industries, as well as fire regimes and hydrology. Better understanding of how to manage not only this outbreak, but how to increase the resilience of the forest to future outbreaks is needed. In order to accomplish this we must have a complete understanding of the mechanisms that contribute to the vulnerability of a forest. Previous forest management tried to increase tree growth and defense through thinning to increase resistance to attack. However, recent evidence suggests that beetles prefer larger trees with more phloem food during beetle epidemics. This study sought to determine if growth rate of individual trees affected their susceptibility to beetle attack during an epidemic. In south-eastern Wyoming, Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine) and Picea engelmannii (Engelmann spruce) were cored to determine growth rate over trees' entire lives and light competition was calculated from an index. Crown competition did not contribute to the differences in growth between healthy trees and infected trees. Beetle attacked trees in both species grew faster throughout either a portion of their lives, or the entirety of it. The lodgepole pine stand was uniform in species and age, but trees that were ultimately attacked in this outbreak had a significantly higher growth rate than their healthy counterparts. The Engelmann spruce stand was mixed age and species and beetle attacked trees were older and larger than the healthy samples.

While drivers of bark beetle outbreaks have been studied extensively at spatial scales ranging from stands to continents, within-stand processes driving individual tree mortality in an outbreak are less well understood. Here we use a spatially explicit long-term monitoring dataset of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) forest impacted by a severe mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) outbreak to explore interactions among fine-scale drivers of beetle-caused tree mortality. Using a hierarchical Bayesian spatial modeling approach, we evaluated whether and how within-stand neighborhood structure and topographic setting interact with tree size to mediate tree level susceptibility to mountain pine beetle outbreak in the Southern Rocky Mountains (USA). We found evidence that both tree growth rate preceding the outbreak and stand structure around the host tree mediated the effect of tree size. However, we did not find evidence that topographic position within a stand mediated the effect of tree size. Mortality probability increased with pre-outbreak growth rate for small to medium sized trees (~10-25 centimeters diameter), but that same effect could not be detected for larger trees. Conversely, mortality probability increased with greater neighborhood density across tree sizes, with the most pronounced effects for medium to large sized trees (~15-30 centimeters diameter). Within-stand topographic variability was not an important predictor of mortality probability; among stands, however, the driest stand conditions experienced the greatest overall mortality. By explicitly considering how natural within-stand heterogeneity mediates individual tree level susceptibility to mountain pine beetle outbreak, our findings bridge an important gap in understanding multi-scale drivers of disturbance dynamics. Identifying factors influencing individual tree mortality in these systems informs our understanding of both the structural development of forest stands and reciprocal feedbacks between stand structure and outbreak dynamics.

Book excerpt: Bark beetles and their associated fungi are among the greatest natural threats to conifers worldwide, but the degree to which host stored resources influence tree-beetle-fungal interactions has not been investigated. In western North America, the range of the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) has expanded from lower elevation Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine) forests into high elevation Pinus albicaulis (whitebark pine), a presumed superior host. I investigated whether stored resources in tree sapwood change after D. ponderosae attack, and whether this change relates to fungal colonization and beetle performance. I also studied how phloem and sapwood resources vary with elevation and tree diameter and examined the effect of tree species and diameter on D. ponderosae host selection. Following beetle attack and fungal colonization, sapwood non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), lipids, and phosphorus declined in attacked trees relative to un-attacked trees. Resource declines were related to the degree of fungal colonization, suggesting a direct benefit to fungi in both host species. In P. contorta, beetle performance was also positively related to stored resources. The concentration of stored resources was generally higher in P. albicaulis than in P. contorta and increased with elevation and tree diameter, suggesting a potential increase in host quality for D. ponderosae and/or fungi. Beetles preferred larger diameter hosts, and although stored resources did not affect beetle performance in P. albicaulis, beetles were more likely to attack P. albicaulis even when larger P. contorta were available. In a parallel system in Norway, phloem NSC and sapwood lipids also declined in Picea abies trees inoculated with the fungus Ceratocystis polonica relative to trees attacked by the bark beetle Ips typographus (which vectors C. polonica) or control trees, again indicating that stored resources enhance fungal colonization. Overall, my results suggest that host stored resources influence the interaction between bark beetles, fungi, and conifers primarily by enhancing fungal growth. Fungal access to stored resources may also benefit beetles in some host tree species. A better understanding of the trophic interactions between beetles, fungi, and conifers may improve our ability to predict bark beetle dynamics and range expansion.
