Book excerpt: The physics of buried mine detection in offshore sediments and in the surf zone was investigated. Optical techniques are useless because they cannot penetrate sediments while magnetic techniques are of low value because of low resolution, short range, and the introduction of non-magnetic mines. For buried mine detection in the off-shore sediment acoustic penetration at shallow grazing angles was explored. An experiment was conducted jointly with SACLANTCEN to measure sound propagation into a sediment in the 500 Hz to 2 kHz band, and a theoretical fast field model was developed to model the penetration. In the surf zone, where bubble clouds are expected to render acoustic methods unreliable, seismic sonar methods were explored as a means to echo range off buried targets. Tests with controlled pulses revealed that the far-field response was dominated by two interface waves. The results have been very encouraging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unexploded military ordnance and toxic chemicals, some dating back to World War I, are a worldwide concern, especially at closed military bases that will be redeveloped for housing or civilian use. In Europe and Asia, many munitions sites are former battlegrounds; in Russia and its former territories, sites are used for storage and waste disposal. Experts estimate that the United States alone could spend between $50 and 250 billion dollars to cleanup these sites, many of which are in high-population density, residential areas. You might live near one such site right now. This book gives detailed instructions for cleaning up military ordnance sites, and lists of explosives, chemical warfare materials and breakdown products that the soil and groundwater must be tested for. Also included are archival studies; remote sensing techniques; geophysical techniques; safety issues; a chemical weapons, explosives and ordnance primer; known and unknown range lists; and a case study of documents written for cleaning up one of the worst examples yet: Spring Valley in the District of Columbia. It disproves myths, common misconceptions and lies, and explains what, how, and where to look for munitions and their residual contamination. * Author is an award winning and world-renowned expert in weapons of mass destruction.* Meets the needs of explosive and ordnance demolition personnel, as well as environmental scientists, insurance agents, and building contractors.* Includes the primary documents written (by the author) for the cleanup of one of the worst sites in the United States (Spring Valley, District of Columbia).* Subject of the book is of worldwide concern with former battlegrounds in Europe and Asia, as well as storage and waste disposal sites in Russia and former Soviet territories.* The only text available with clear and complete instructions on proper cleanup of military ordnance sites including a detailed list of explosives, chemical warfare material and breakdown products.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landmines are a worldwide problem and their detection is an active field of rese arch whether the mines were metallic or not. Infrared imaging is considered as t he best single sensor used to detect shallow buried landmines. The strength of I R imaging is due to the existence of the thermal signature of the buried object at the soil surface due to the different temperature variations induced by burie d objects. We aim at building a protocol for detecting and classifying buried landmines. Fo r this purpose, we apply image processing techniques on IR images due to the the rmal signature property of buried objects in general and landmines in particular . The work focuses on one type of landmines but can be easily extended. In the demining field, it is established that one indicator is not enough but ra ther a system of multiple sensors fused together is a must to achieve a capable system. Thus, the IR imaging system is combined with a direct normal vision algo rithm to remove surface laid objects. Also, it is enhanced using different scena rios that include water spraying with the day and night scenarios. A special setup which consists of a soil bed with different sensors and a weathe r station is prepared to obtain necessary data whether IR images or any variable like specific temperatures or radiations. This is an outdoor but not a field se tup and it is based on an indoor soil bed previously prepared according to (Kabb ani 2005) and (Khalid 2005). The different experimental data is compared with a three dimensional numerical model developed by (Saleh 2004). The three dimension al model is reduced into a one dimensional one for speeding the process and that model is enhanced to match the three dimensional model with a reduction of erro r up to 60%. Furthermore, two databases of synthetic thermal signatures based on the numerica l simulation data are constructed to achieve mine classification. The first data base is small and restricted to the soil type used in experimentation with 240 r ecords while the second one is large and extends to 473 soil types in the vicini ty of the soil type used. Only the small database space is searched using differ ent techniques that include genetic algorithms and neural networks.

In late 2000, Mike Golio gave the world a significant tool to use in this revolution: The RF and Microwave Handbook. Since then, wireless technology spread across the globe with unprecedented speed, fueled by 3G and 4G mobile technology and the proliferation of wireless LANs. Updated to reflect this tremendous growth, the second edition of this widely embraced, bestselling handbook divides its coverage conveniently into a set of three books, each focused on a particular aspect of the technology. Six new chapters cover WiMAX, broadband cable, bit error ratio (BER) testing, high-power PAs (power amplifiers), heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs), as well as an overview of microwave engineering. Over 100 contributors, with diverse backgrounds in academic, industrial, government, manufacturing, design, and research reflect the breadth and depth of the field. This eclectic mix of contributors ensures that the coverage balances fundamental technical issues with the important business and marketing constraints that define commercial RF and microwave engineering. Focused chapters filled with formulas, charts, graphs, diagrams, and tables make the information easy to locate and apply to practical cases. The new format, three tightly focused volumes, provides not only increased information but also ease of use. You can find the information you need quickly, without wading through material you don’t immediately need, giving you access to the caliber of data you have come to expect in a much more user-friendly format.

A thorough understanding of environmental variability greatly increases the likelihood of mission success. To ensure that naval forces have the most up-to-date capabilities, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) has an extensive environmental research program. This research, to be of greatest use to the warfighter, needs to be directed towards assisting and solving battlefield problems. To increase research community understanding of the operational demands placed on naval operators and to facilitate discussion between these two groups, the National Research Council's (NRC) Ocean Studies Board (OSB), working with ONR and the Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy, convened five previous symposia on tactical oceanography. Oceanography and Mine Warfare examines the following issues: (1) how environmental data are used in current mine warfare doctrine, (2) current procedures for in situ collection of data, (3) the present capabilities of the Navy's oceanographic community to provide supporting information for mine warfare operations, and (4) the ability of oceanographic research and technology developments to enhance current mine warfare capabilities. This report primarily concentrates on the importance of oceanographic data for mine countermeasures.

Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume were presented at the July–August 2008 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Unexploded Ordnance Detection and Mitigation. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glorious Tuscany region of northern Italy. For the ninth time we gathered at this idyllic spot to explore and extend the reciprocity between mathematics and engineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usually disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied scientists which occurred at our eight previous ASI’s continued at this meeting. The detection and neutralization of unexploded ordnance (UXO) has been of major concern for very many decades; at least since the First World war. UXO continues to be the subject of intensive research in many ?elds of science, incl- ing mathematics, signal processing (mainly radar and sonar) and chemistry. While today’s headlines emphasize the mayhem resulting from the placement of imp- vised explosive devices (IEDs), humanitarian landmine clearing continues to draw signi?cant global attention as well. In many countries of the world, landmines threaten the population and hinder reconstruction and fast, ef?cient utilization of large areas of the mined land in the aftermath of military con?icts.

Concerned about the slow pace of demining, the Office of Science and Technology asked RAND to assess potential innovative technologies being explored and to project what funding would be required to foster the development of the more promising ones. The authors of this report suggest that the federal government undertake a research and development effort to develop a multisensor mine detection system over the next five to eight years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes experiments conducted to estimate the probability of detection and false alarm rate for detection of buried mines using a hyperspectral imager scanned from a personnel lift. In the experiments, surrogate mines & blocks of explosives were buried under various vegetative covers and bare soil using standard mine-laying methods. Images were obtained at various times up to 15.5 months after burial. Image extraction & spectral classification methods are described and the classification results are presented. Preliminary detection probabilities and false alarm rates are estimated for different cover types.
