Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you interested in using argument-driven inquiry for middle school lab instruction but just aren’t sure how to do it? Argument-Driven Inquiry in Physical Science will provide you with both the information and instructional materials you need to start using this method right away. The book is a one-stop source of expertise, advice, and investigations to help physical science students work the way scientists do. The book is divided into two basic parts: 1. An introduction to the stages of argument-driven inquiry—from question identification, data analysis, and argument development and evaluation to double-blind peer review and report revision. 2. A well-organized series of 22 field-tested labs designed to be much more authentic for instruction than traditional laboratory activities. The labs cover four core ideas in physical science: matter, motion and forces, energy, and waves. Students dig into important content and learn scientific practices as they figure out everything from how thermal energy works to what could make an action figure jump higher. The authors are veteran teachers who know your time constraints, so they designed the book with easy-to-use reproducible student pages, teacher notes, and checkout questions. The labs also support today’s standards and will help your students learn the core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and scientific practices found in the Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, the authors offer ways for students to develop the disciplinary skills outlined in the Common Core State Standards. Many of today’s middle school teachers—like you—want to find new ways to engage students in scientific practices and help students learn more from lab activities. Argument-Driven Inquiry in Physical Science does all of this while also giving students the chance to practice reading, writing, speaking, and using math in the context of science.

Book excerpt: To help teachers teach science through Investigations, Seven Sides Publishing has provided a series of lab manuals for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. These manuals are a rich resource of simple hands-on labs. These three lab manuals (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) cover 100% of the TEKS for five classes (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, IPC, and Environmental Systems). Together Physics and Chemistry cover 100% of the TEKS for IPC, and Biology also covers 100% of the TEKS for Environmental Systems). There is a shortage of user-friendly labs for science concepts. Too many labs have too much busy information in them; this is not the case here. We have taken a lot of the traditional labs that have been around for decades and simplified them, so they are easy for students and teachers to read and perform. Each section starts with a concept map that organizes vocabulary to speak to your students to give visual clues to allow understanding and relationships of the vocabulary. Each section ends with a list of virtual investigations that will complement those found in this book. Having students learn through investigations allows students to efficiently learn content and skills in the context of other content and skills; this allows students to chunk this information and skills into their long-term memory easily.

Book excerpt: Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity's most pressing current and future challenges. The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built. These three dimensions are: crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science through their common application across science and engineering; scientific and engineering practices; and disciplinary core ideas in the physical sciences, life sciences, and earth and space sciences and for engineering, technology, and the applications of science. The overarching goal is for all high school graduates to have sufficient knowledge of science and engineering to engage in public discussions on science-related issues, be careful consumers of scientific and technical information, and enter the careers of their choice. A Framework for K-12 Science Education is the first step in a process that can inform state-level decisions and achieve a research-grounded basis for improving science instruction and learning across the country. The book will guide standards developers, teachers, curriculum designers, assessment developers, state and district science administrators, and educators who teach science in informal environments.

Book excerpt: Are you interested in a three-dimensional approach to helping your high school physics students learn the practices of science, including constructing explanations and engaging in argument from evidence? By using argument-driven inquiry (ADI) for high school physics lab instruction, you can do just that. Argument-Driven Inquiry in Physics, Volume 2 provides the information and instructional materials you need to start using this method right away for electricity and magnetism investigations. The book is a one-stop source of expertise, advice, and lessons to help physics students work the way scientists do. The book is divided into three parts: * An introduction to argument-driven inquiry and how to use the labs. You' ll learn about the stages of ADI, from question identification, data analysis, and argument development and evaluation to double-blind peer review and report revision. * A well-organized series of 17 field-tested labs designed to be much more authentic for instruction than traditional laboratory activities. The labs cover a variety of topics, including electrostatics; electric current, capacitors, resistors, and circuits; and magnetic fields and electromagnetism. Introduction labs acquaint students with new content. Application labs encourage deeper exploration of the use of a theory, law, or unifying concept. * Helpful appendixes. These range from timeline options to peer-review guides and teacher scoring rubrics-- including ones for AP physics. ADI in Physics, Volume 2 is a follow-up to ADI in Physics, Volume 1: Mechanics Lab Investigations for Grades 9- 12. Both are part of the NSTA Press series for ADI in biology, chemistry, life science, and physical science. The authors understand your time constraints, so they designed the books with easy-to-use lab handouts, student pages, teacher notes, and checkout questions. The labs also support three-dimensional instruction, helping students learn the science practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas found in the Next Generation Science Standards. The labs also support student learning of standards in both algebra- and calculus-based AP Physics courses. In addition, they offer ways for students to develop the disciplinary skills outlined in the Common Core State Standards. Many of today' s high school teachers-- like you-- are seeking new ways to engage students in science practices and help students learn more from lab activities. ADI in Physics, Volume 2 does all of this while also giving your students the chance to practice reading, writing, speaking, and using math in the context of science.

Book excerpt: The advent of relatively inexpensive but powerful computers is af fecting practically all aspects of our lives, but some of the greatest influence is being felt in the physical sciences. However, university curricula and teaching methods have responded somewhat cautiously, having only recently come to terms with the now omnipresent calcula tor. While many instructors at first feared that the widespread use of pocket calculators would lead to generations of students who could not multiply or perhaps even add, few now seriously lament the disappear ance of slide rules, logarithm tables, and the often error-bound tedium that such tools of the trade demand. Time that used to be spent on the use of logarithm tables and manual square-root extraction can be prof itably turned to earlier studies of calculus or computer programming. Now that the calculator has been accepted into the classroom, we face a computer-software revolution which promises to be considerably more profound. Modern textbooks in the physical sciences routinely assume their readers have access not only to calculators, but often to home or even mainframe computers as well, and the problems teachers discuss and assign students can be more complex and often more realistic than in the days of only pad and pencil computations. As less effort is spent on numerical computation, more can be devoted to conceptual under standing and to applications of the increasingly sophisticated mathe matical methods needed for a real appreciation of recent advances in the discipline.

Book excerpt: With the technical advancement of digital media and the medium of communication in recent years, there is a widespread interest in digital entertainment. An emerging te- nical research area edutainment, or educational entertainment, has been accepted as education using digital entertainment. Edutainment has been recognized as an eff- tive way of learning using modern digital media tools, like computers, games, mobile phones, televisions, or other virtual reality applications, which emphasizes the use of entertainment with application to the education domain. The Edutainment conference series was established in 2006 and subsequently - ganized as a special event for researchers working in this new interest area of e-learning and digital entertainment. The main purpose of Edutainment conferences is to facilitate the discussion, presentation, and information exchange of the scientific and technological development in the new community. The Edutainment conference series becomes a valuable opportunity for researchers, engineers, and graduate s- dents to communicate at these international annual events. The conference series - cludes plenary invited talks, workshops, tutorials, paper presentation tracks, and panel discussions. The Edutainment conference series was initiated in Hangzhou, China in 2006. Following the success of the first event, the second (Edutainment 2007 in Hong Kong, China), third (Edutainment 2008 in Nanjing, China), and fourth editions (Edutainment 2009 in Banff, Canada) were organized. Edutainment 2010 was held during August 16–18, 2010 in Changchun, China. Two workshops were jointly org- ized together with Edutainment 2010.
