Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Remedies for Disabled Soldiers Hard exercise and exposure to the weather in the course of military training have in a few months transformed delicate and languid youths into vigorous men, capable of withstand ing the severest bodily or mental strain. Again, later on, in the field, these same men, reduced to an extremity of fatigue and exhaustion, have regained their elasticity and vigour in a few hours by the use of hot baths. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Remedies for Disabled Soldiers Within the last year physical methods of treatment in military cases have attracted considerable attention, and in one form or another have been adopted in many places throughout the country. Much progress has been made in introducing them, or improving their administration, in the Army Medical Service, in the Auxiliary Military Hospitals, and also at the British Health Resorts. Any writer may well hesitate in face of so large a subject, for, indeed, its adequate treatment would require the combined knowledge of many specialists, - in Hydrology, Electrotherapeutics, Radiology, Mechano-therapeutics, Remedial Exercises and Training, and Medical Climatology. All these sciences are now growing so rapidly that it is evident there must be for many years to come a corresponding development in medical practice. Physical treatment is the convenient term which denotes the remedial use of these closely related physical forces. It may now claim to be a special department of Medicine, not in respect to the organs or diseases treated, but in respect to the remedies employed. The practitioner who at the present time chooses to devote himself to it will have a double reward, not only by making a sensible contribution to the vast problem of the restoration of the wounded soldier, but also by adding something of permanent value to medical science and art. I shall be satisfied if the present work may serve as a guide over rather unfamiliar ground, showing how certain valuable and closely allied methods of treatment may be utilized to the best advantage upon a basis of accurate observation and records. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Charlton has produced a ringing indictment of disability oppression, which, he says, is rooted in degradation, dependency, and powerlessness and is experienced in some form by five hundred million persons throughout the world who have physical, sensory, cognitive, or developmental disabilities. Nothing About Us Without Us is the first book in the literature on disability to provide a theoretical overview of disability oppression that shows its similarities to, and differences from, racism, sexism, and colonialism. Charlton's analysis is illuminated by interviews he conducted over a ten-year period with disability rights activists throughout the Third World, Europe, and the United States. Charlton finds an antidote for dependency and powerlessness in the resistance to disability oppression that is emerging worldwide. His interviews contain striking stories of self-reliance and empowerment evoking the new consciousness of disability rights activists. As a latecomer among the world's liberation movements, the disability rights movement will gain visibility and momentum from Charlton's elucidation of its history and its political philosophy of self-determination, which is captured in the title of his book. Nothing About Us Without Us expresses the conviction of people with disabilities that they know what is best for them. Charlton's combination of personal involvement and theoretical awareness assures greater understanding of the disability rights movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking text provides a comprehensive guide to the occupational therapy profession in Australia, from the profession’s role in the health care system to the broad scope and nature of its practice. The book is organised into three sections: the Australian context; professional issues and practice issues. Contributions from 80 Australian occupational therapists working in education, research, policy and practice bring together the most relevant and up-to-date information in this essential book. The authors begin the Australian environment section with an overview of the Australian health care system, a history of occupational therapy in Australia and the role of Australian occupational therapy professional associations and regulatory bodies. The values and philosophy of occupational therapy, ethical and legal aspects of practice and the role of occupational therapy in population health and health promotion are considered next. The professional issues covered in the book include using effective communication skills, client-centred practice principles and a strength-based approach when working with individuals, families, groups, communities, organisations and populations. Additional topics, including occupational science, the education of occupational therapists, research in occupational therapy, evidence-based practice clinical reasoning and occupational therapy models of practice, are also covered in the middle section of the book. Occupational Therapy in Australia: Practice and Process Issues is established as the essential practice reference for students, practitioners and educators in Australia. This second edition has been revised and updated throughout and includes new chapters on communication skills, environmental aspects of occupational therapy practice and decolonising occupational therapy through a strength-based approach to practice.

Marshall, that "American military officers, of whatever service, should share common ground ethically and morally." In this new edition, the authors methodically explore that common ground, reflecting on the basics of the Profession of Arms, and the officer's special place and distinctive obligations within that profession and especially to the Constitution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume provides the knowledge and skills that mental health professionals need for more effective, informed work with clients with disabilities. Combining her extensive knowledge as a clinician, researcher, and teacher with her personal experience as someone with a disability, Olkin provides an insider's perspective on critical issues that are often overlooked in training. A lucid conceptual framework is presented for understanding disability as a minority experience, one that is structured by social, legal, and attitudinal constraints as well as physical challenges. Illuminating frequently encountered psychosocial themes and concerns, chapters describe a range of approaches to dealing with disability issues in the treatment of adults, children, and families. Topics addressed include etiquette with clients with disabilities; special concerns in assessment, evaluation, and diagnosis; the impact of disability on sexuality and romance, as well as pregnancy, birthing, and parenting; the use of assistive technology and devices; disability and substance abuse; and more. Filled with clinical examples and observations, the volume also discusses strategies for enhancing teaching, training, and research.
