The data was gathered to answer the research questions via an extensive literature review, and a questionnaire sent to the members of Provo Fire & Rescue. The results showed a clear direction for Provo Fire & Rescue to advance their physical fitness program. Several professional organizations are asserting recommendations with regards to physical fitness. The National Fire Protection Association, International Association of Firefighters, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs standards on wellness were reviewed. There are seven recommendations made based on information from these and other organizations. These recommendations give the administration of Provo Fire & Rescue ample information to improve the overall health and wellness of the organization.

Today, the DeKalb Fire Service is a lean, effective emergency service delivery agency. During this period, we have become increasingly concerned for the maintenance of emergency responding apparatus and our fire stations, as well as the "maintenance" of our personnel. Plans have been implemented for apparatus replacement and regular maintenance. Long range planning has begun to address facility location and maintenance, and efforts have begun to address the "maintenance" of our most important asset, our personnel. The nature of the problem is to: 1) identify the risk factors affecting firefighters; 2) outline the various options currently used for addressing fire personnel physical fitness; and 3) determine the critical needs to facilitate firefighter physical fitness. The physical well being of all Fire Department personnel is extremely critical as we meet the challenges of a growing community with limited revenues. Today's firefighter must not only meet the physical demands but must withstand the internal stress of emergency response. It is the focus of this research project to examine the options available for firefighter physical fitness and to determine if that training is effective. The primary research method is descriptive research. The research was accomplished through a review of the literature, personal interviews, and a survey of U. S. fire departments. This research project will provide a local historical perspective on the development of physical fitness training, identify current options to facilitate firefighter physical fitness, and identify various issues confronting physical fitness program implementation. After review and discussion of the literature and the survey data, the following recommendations are offered: 1. Provide facilities or resources for on-duty and off-duty firefighter physical fitness use. 2. Evaluate the physical fitness capability of all operations personnel on an annual basis. 3. Develop a fire department physical fitness standard and encourage all personnel to meet the standard. 4. Mandate physical fitness as part of the daily firefighter regimen. 5.
