Book Synopsis Copepods in Aquaculture by : Cheng-Sheng Lee
Download or read book Copepods in Aquaculture written by Cheng-Sheng Lee and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of copepods in aquaculture has long been recognized, especially in the larval rearing of many marine fishes. This timely publication provides a single source of information on copepod biology, culture methods and practical use in marine finfish hatcheries. Originating out of a workshop held on copepods by the Oceanic Institute in Hawaii, this proceedings includes review articles and papers presented by leading international experts in copepod biology and aquaculture. It is a seminal work that integrates the most up-to-date information on selecting copepod species, effects of algal species on reproduction, ways to increase production, the nutritional value of copepods, behavioral characteristics of copepods, potential use of copepod nauplii and eggs, and their application to larval rearing of various marine finfish species.
Book Synopsis Evolutionary Biogeography of the Marine Algae of the North Atlantic by : David J. Garbary
Download or read book Evolutionary Biogeography of the Marine Algae of the North Atlantic written by David J. Garbary and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algal systematists, geologists and evolutionary biologists provide a synthesis of the evolutionary biogeography of red, brown, and green algae of the North Atlantic Ocean also considering their relationships with species and genera in the Arctic and Pacific Oceans as well as other subtropical and tropical seas. The history of the Atlantic Basin and its connections to other ocean basins is treated from the geological, paleontological and paleoclimatic perspective. This is contrasted with biogeographic analyses of marine animal systems and the role of plant/animal interactions in evolution. Some of the approaches include traditional systematic studies, cladistic analysis, the experimental evaluation of environment in establishing distribution limits and the application of molecular biology.

Book Synopsis Treetops at Risk by : Margaret Lowman
Download or read book Treetops at Risk written by Margaret Lowman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-22 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest canopies not only support high terrestrial biodiversity but also represent a critical interface between the atmosphere and the earth. They provide goods and services to support diverse human communities and offer opportunities to explore sustainable use of these resources for many generations of local livelihoods. Forest canopies are important carbon sequestration units, and in this sense, serve as climate control for the planet. Canopies are important energy production centers for the planet, and serve as the basis for many food chains. The canopy can also act as a hook for education outreach and conservation, inspiring ecotourism through recreation and other sustainable uses such as treetop walks, zip lines, and birding. Despite these critical services provided by forest canopies, almost no dedicated research in the treetops was initiated until as recently as the late 1970s when single rope techniques were developed by mountaineering professionals and adapted for use in the canopy. Subsequently, an array of canopy access tools was designed in the 1980s and early 1990s that have opened up this “eighth continent” for global exploration and discovery. This volume uses the major findings of the 5th international canopy conference as a platform for organization, but it does not mimic the sessions and presentations of the conference itself. Instead, it builds on the important themes that emerged from the conference and solicits articles that represent future priorities and advancements for canopy science in the next decade. Despite the global efforts of hundreds of forest scientists over the past 3 decades, forests are degrading at an accelerated rate and biodiversity is increasingly threatened by human activities. Given these trends - despite the very best efforts of the world’s best scientists - other approaches must be taken. This volume summarizes the issue of “treetops at risk” and assembles a global authorship to examine past accomplishments and future initiatives critical in forest conservation.
Book Synopsis Algae of Australia by : Gustaaf M. Hallegraeff
Download or read book Algae of Australia written by Gustaaf M. Hallegraeff and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phytoplankton account for more than 90% of the biomass of living organisms in the world's seas and produce 50% of the atmospheric oxygen we breathe. They form the base of all marine food webs and play a critical role in shaping global climate. There is an increasing appreciation of their value as key biological indicators of ocean health and the impact of climate change on marine life, fisheries and humans. Algae of Australia: Phytoplankton of Temperate Coastal Waters, the product of three decades of research by Professor Gustaaf Hallegraeff and 11 collaborators, provides descriptions and illustrations of 541 species known from the estuarine, coastal and offshore waters of southern Australia. It includes more than 1,100 photographs and drawings, and represents the first guide for the identification of these fundamentally important microscopic algae in the temperate Australasian region. The book, incorporating comprehensive bibliographies and a glossary of technical terms, will become an indispensable resource for oceanographers, fisheries biologists, aquaculture managers, as well as enquiring non-specialists. Key Features * These organisms form the base of all marine food webs and they are a key indicator of changing ocean temperatures * Full descriptions provided for 541 species * Habitat and distributional information included along with more than 1,100 photographs to aid identification
Book Synopsis Ecology and Conservation of Southeast Asian Marine and Freshwater Environments including Wetlands by : A. Sasekumar
Download or read book Ecology and Conservation of Southeast Asian Marine and Freshwater Environments including Wetlands written by A. Sasekumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major concern among ecologists in and outside the ASEAN region is the degradation of the environment, and the overexploitation of freshwater and marine resources. There is as yet no indication that freshwater and marine resources are being managed on a sustainable basis, and loss of wetlands, whether freshwater swamps or mangrove swamps, is a major problem in the ASEAN region. Reclamation of mangrove swamps for aquaculture and agriculture seems to be a continuous activity here and the status of marine parks should also be examined in the light of recent resort development acitivities on small islands. This volume contains numerous recommendations for the promotion of ecological studies and regional cooperation in marine, freshwater ecology and conservation, with special emphasis on the common water masses like the Strait of Malacca, Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea.
