Book excerpt: Several relatively new photonic components have recently come to the forefront in applications related to the photonic processing of broadband microwave signals. Included in this set of photonic elements are the wavelength tunable laser, high dispersion optical fiber, and the Bragg reflection grating. These components hold the promise of revolutionizing the field of broadband photonic processing. This report documents the performance characteristics of these components and shows how they can be used for two broadband phased array applications, beamforming and null steering. Two systems are described. A technical overview is presented for each system with experimental data provided to demonstrate the performance of each system. Both systems described herein maximize component reuse and fully integrate transmit and receive modes in efficient hardware compressive topologies.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the past few years, phased array antennas and variable RF/Microwave delay lines have been the subject of much research. This thesis presents a photonic solution to the generation of multiple, compact delay lines. Variable time delays are generated by optically tapping points on an acousto-optic cell by the use of a deformable mirror device. Isolation of a particular time delay is accomplished by the conversion of a time delay point into a corresponding spatial frequency by the use of appropriate optics. The desired time delay is recovered by heterodyning a local oscillator with the desired spatial frequency, selected by a tiltable mirror device. Multiple delay lines are produced by the use of a binary optic device. The design and simulation of the integrated optical system was carried out using a real ray tracing program written by the author. Theoretical signal to noise calculations are also carried out."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hands-on, practical new resource provides optical network designers with basic but necessary information about radio systems air interface and radio access network architecture, protocols, and interfaces, using 5G use cases as relevant example. The book introduces mobile network designers to the transmission modeling techniques for the design of a radio access optical network. The main linear and non-linear propagation effects in optical fiber are covered. The book introduces mobile network designers to the optical technologies used in digital and analog radio access networks, such as optical amplifiers and transmitters, and describes different deployment scenarios, including point-to-point fiber systems, wavelength-division multiplexing systems, and passive optical networks. New integrated photonic technologies for optical switching are also discussed. The book illustrates the principles of optical beamforming and explains how optical technologies can be used to provide accurate phase and frequency control of antenna elements. The new architecture of the optical transport network, driven by the new, challenging requirements that 5G poses in terms of high capacity, high energy efficiency, low latency and low cost is discussed. The use of photonic devices to perform tasks as radio-frequency generation and beamforming, with improved accuracy and cost compared to traditional electronic systems, especially when moving to mm-waves is also explored. Readers also learn the replacement of electric interconnect systems with higher speed and more energy efficient optical lines to perform more effectively computationally demanding baseband processing in 5G. All presented propagation models can be implemented in a spreadsheet, in order to provide the designer with simple rules of thumbs for network planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many communication and radar applications requiring antennas with high directionality and narrow beam width. Typically, the width and directivity of the radiation pattern of a single radiating antenna element is insufficient for these applications. One method of improving these limitations is to increase the element aperture. A typical approach is to place the radiating element at the focal point of a large parabolic dish. However, for many mobile platform applications this is not a practical approach. With a narrow radiation pattern the antenna aperture must be steered to direct the signal in the desired direction. For a large dish antenna it may be difficult to position the aperture quickly enough due to inertia effects of the massive antenna. A better method to increase the antenna aperture without the adverse consequences of a large dish structure is to use an antenna array, which is an assembly of radiating elements in a given geometrical pattern. The beam pattern of an array antenna can be adjusted by any of five parameters: the geometrical configuration of the array, the displacement between the elements, the excitation amplitude, the excitation phase, and the radiation pattern of the individual elements. As will be shown, by adjusting the phase of the signal delivered to each element it is possible to control the steering angle of the beam without physically repositioning the antenna aperture. Such an antenna is called a phased array antenna. (PAA) because a phased array antenna does not need to be physically repositioned, its reaction time can be several orders of magnitude faster than a large dish antenna. This allows PAA systems to be multifunctional, meaning they can perform many different tasks simultaneously.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive resource and thorough treatment in the latest development of Digital RF Memory (DRFM) technology and their key role in maintaining dominance over the electromagnetic spectrum. Part I discusses the use of advanced technology to design transceivers for spectrum sensing using unmanned systems to dominate the electromagnetic spectrum. Part II uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to enable modern spectrum sensing and detection signal processing for electronic support and electronic attack. Another key contribution is examination of counter-DRFM techniques. DRFM and transceiver design details and examples are provided along with the MATLAB software allowing the reader to construct their own embedded DRFM transceivers for unmanned systems. It examines the design trade-offs in developing multiple, structured, false target synthesis DRFM architectures and aids in developing counter-DRFM techniques and distinguish false target from real ones. Written by an expert in the field, and including MATLAB™ design software, this is the only comprehensive book written on the subject of DRFM.
