Book excerpt: This book contains the papers and discussions from the symposium, "PARTICU LATE CARBON: Atmospheric Life Cycle," held at the General Motors Research Laboratories on October 13-14, 1980. This symposium, which focused on atmospheric particulate elemental carbon, or soot, was the twenty-fifth in this series sponsored by the General Motors Research Laboratories. The present symposium volume contains discussions of the following aspects of particulate elemental carbon (EC): the atmos pheric life cycle of EC including sources, sinks, and transport processes, the role of EC in atmospheric chemistry and optics, the possible role of EC in altering climate, and measurement techniques as well as ambient concentrations in urban, rural, and remote areas. Previous symposia have covered a wide range of scientific and engineering subjects. Topics are selected because they are new or represent rapidly changing fields and are of significant technical importance. It is ironic that the study of particulate elemental carbon or soot should meet the above criteria for selection because soot, especially from coal and wood combustion, has been a recognized air pollutant for centuries. However, since the 1950s, when intense efforts to study air pollution were initiated, to until a few years ago, the role of elemental carbon in the atmosphere was largely ignored. The major reason for this was the lack of a suitable measurement technique.

Book excerpt: This book chronicles the proceedings of the Second Symposium on Particles in Gases and Liquids: Detection, Characterization and Control held as a part of the 20th Annual Fine Particle Society meeting in Boston, August 21-25, 1989. As this second symposium was as successful as the prior one, so we have decided to hold symposia on this topic on a regular (biennial) basis and the third symposium in this series is scheduled to be held at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Fine Particle Society in San Jose, California, July 29-August 2, 1991. l As pointed out in the Preface to the prior volume in this series that recently there has been tremendous concern about yield losses due to unwanted particles, and these unwelcome particles can originate from a legion of sources, including process gases and liquids. Also all signals indicate that in the future manufacture of sophisticated and sensitive microelectronic components (with shrinking dimensions) and other precision parts, the need for detection, characterization, analysis and control of smaller and smaller particles will be more intensified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of review articles by scientists who have pioneered many of the recent advances in studies of the optical effects of small particles. The book begins with a review of the multitude of sharp dielectric resonances which exist in all optical spectra as a result of particle size and shape. Latest advances in absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy of a single particle and/or an ensemble of particles are also discussed, as well as advances in the energy transfer mechanisms for molecules embedded in the particle. The effects of laser-induced heating on a single particle are reviewed in terms of the hydrodynamics and thermodynamics of the liquid droplet and its ambient gas surrounding. The limits of applying bulk optical constants to small particles which lie between the bulk substance and the quantum-sized substance are also presented. Contents:Morphology-Dependent Resonances (S Hill & R Benner)Spectroscopy of Single Levitated Micron Sized Particles (S Arnold)Absorption and Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Aerosols (A Campillo & Horn-Bond Lin)Laser-Induced Droplet Heating (R Armstrong)The Applicability of Bulk Optical Constants to Small Particles (D Huffman) Readership: Optical physicists, applied physicists, chemists, mechanical and chemical engineers. Review: “This volume provides a timely and well-written account of a number of topics subsumed under the title.” Milton Kerker Journal of Colloid and Interface Science (USA), 1989 “This is a most interesting and useful review of new departures in light scattering research with potentially important applications … clearly written covering the essential basics as well as current developments…” A R Jones Journal of Modern Optics, 1989

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoacoustics promises to revolutionize medical imaging and may well make as dramatic a contribution to modern medicine as the discovery of the x-ray itself once did. Combining electromagnetic and ultrasonic waves synergistically, photoacoustics can provide deep speckle-free imaging with high electromagnetic contrast at high ultrasonic resolution and without any health risk. While photoacoustic imaging is probably the fastest growing biomedical imaging technology, this book is the first comprehensive volume in this emerging field covering both the physics and the remarkable noninvasive applications that are changing diagnostic medicine. Bringing together the leading pioneers in this field to write about their own work, Photoacoustic Imaging and Spectroscopy is the first to provide a full account of the latest research and developing applications in the area of biomedical photoacoustics. Photoacoustics can provide functional sensing of physiological parameters such as the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin. It can also provide high-contrast functional imaging of angiogenesis and hypermetabolism in tumors in vivo. Discussing these remarkable noninvasive applications and so much more, this reference is essential reading for all researchers in medical imaging and those clinicians working at the cutting-edge of modern biotechnology to develop diagnostic techniques that can save many lives and just as importantly do no harm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photothermal Investigations of Solids and Fluids discusses photothermal optical diagnostic techniques in the study of solids and fluids, which involve areas of photothermal spectroscopy, imaging, and velocimetry. This book explores the development of lasers as powerful and convenient sources of localized energy. Organized into 10 chapters, this monograph begins with an overview of photothermal spectroscopy as the field in which the nature of matter is probed using optical excitation of a medium and optical probing of the thermal energy that results from this excitation. This book then provides the reader with a link between the physics applicable to the photothermal experiments and the methodology involved in such investigation. Other chapters examine the experimental photothermal detectors that are constructed for use in most forms of chromatography and electrophoresis. The final chapter deals with several promising spectroscopies, including photothermal interferometry, photothermal modulation of Mie scattering, and photophoretic spectroscopy. Graduate students, professors, and research scientists will find this monograph extremely useful.
