Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collotype and Photo-Lithography The impossiblity of obtaining any work in the English language on the subject of Collotype first led to my translation of the German work of Dr. Schnauss, and the fact that no work has hitherto appeared fully dealing with the matter is the excuse I offer for the present publication. The translation is necessarily one of considerable freedom, but it is offered as containing all the information to be found in the original, and in addition, considerable extensions, made with the author's consent. The omission of the chapter dealing at length with the steam machine was necessitated by the fact that the rotary machine there described is no longer manufactured. Without pointing to the frontispiece in any sense as a high-class work, it may serve to show that I have made some practical acquaintance with the subject. The illustration, printed on ordinary paper, was produced from the instructions found in this work, and I may add that at the time of writing I have printed over 500 impressions from the first plate, and it still remains in fair working condition. Book Synopsis Practical Lithography by : Alfred Seymour
Download or read book Practical Lithography written by Alfred Seymour and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Practical Lithography' is a guide to practicing lithography, which is a planographic method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water. The printing is from a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a smooth surface. It was invented in 1796 by the German author and actor Alois Senefelder and was initially used mostly for musical scores and maps. Lithography can be used to print text or images onto paper or other suitable material. A lithograph is something printed by lithography, but this term is only used for fine art prints and some other, mostly older, types of printed matter, not for those made by modern commercial lithography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lithography And finally, that the printing of a lithograph may be as artistic as the printing of an etching. This to the professional lithographer is a crime, to the artist a delight. To the professional printer the prints must look just like the artist's drawing, and all be alike. The fact that the artist sees the glimmer of new grace in his work as he prints - the germ of an idea as he goes ou - a new scheme of color as he experiments - is to be suppressed, and the professional lithographer suppresses it; he has been trained to believe litho graphs ought to be as like as two peas. The artist has collapsed under expense - mystery and this artless lithographic ideal. The few who for got these lithographic canons, the trade-unions tried to stifle and drive from the practice of the art. Download or read book Practical Lithography (Classic Reprint) written by Alfred Seymour and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Lithography "Alois Senefelder never benefited much by his discovery of the elementary principles of lithography, but none of those to whom it has given profitable occupation will remember without some feeling the patient and persistent efforts of the struggling actor and dramatist who, only after the greatest sacrifices and hardships, laid the germ of this splendid development, and watched and guarded its growth." There is one characteristic feature of the discovery of lithography for which Senefelder ought to receive the fullest credit. Unlike other discoveries of industrial and scientific value, there can be no doubt whatever as to its origin. Senefelder's claim has never been disputed, yet "the payment of a debt of gratitude to the fact is easily overlooked when the wheel of history has made another turn." It has been again and again suggested that the blighting influences of Commercialism have robbed lithography of many of its traditional features and a few, at least, of its best and most artistic qualities as a reproductive art. This same commercial spirit, however, has inspired and encouraged a charming variety of effect both in colour and design, and lithography of to-day, in almost every form of its manifestation, is infinitely more attractive and capable of considerably more expressive power than could ever have been hoped for before commercial utility and value demanded a full recognition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Masters of Lithography Omissions of certain well-known lithographers will be noticed by those familiar with the sub jcet, and in particular the omission of the repro ductive men, such as aubry-lecomte and Mouil leron. The question of the respective positions of a man who does original work and one who reproduces the work of others is an old one, and I do not care to enter upon a discussion of it here, especially since there is nothing new to be said upon the subject. Suflice it for me to say that while I recognise the important part played by reproductive work in the past, partien larly before the invention of photography, I can not consider a man who merely interprets the work of others worthy to be placed among the great names of art, any more than I can consid er a translator in literature the equal of a great creative writer. Book Synopsis The Preparation of Drawings and Other Illustrations for Photo-Reproduction (Classic Reprint) by : Chas W. Reinhardt

This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preparation of Drawings and Other Illustrations for Photo-Reproduction When an author or publisher wishes to make sure of a facsimile reduction of as perfect a line drawing as is needed for his-purpose, he will have it reproduced by photo-lithography or by photo engraving on zinc. Photo-lithography is generally employed for making large-sized illustrations for folding sheets and insets, which cannot very well be handled economically by the ordinary printing press. The originals require the same finish as those used for the zinc process. The photographs, reduced to the desired size, are transferred to a polished lithographic stone, which, after being re etched, is ready to print from in the lithographic press. Original photographs may also be repro duced in this way, giving the same general result as by the more familiar half-tone process, de scribed further on. A line engraving on' zinc is produced by first printing a reversed negative, made from a large original, upon a polished and sensitized zinc plate. When inked by means of a printing roller, the ink adheres to the black lines of the plate, corresponding to those on the original drawing. Powdered resin is then sprinkled over the plate. It adheres to the ink lines, and on being heated it melts and forms a protective coating against the etching solution. This solution is next poured over the plate and is allowed to remain until it eats out enough of the metal between the lines to leave the latter in clear relief. More metal is then removed or routed from between the lines by means of a finishing tool. Finally, the zinc plate is mounted upon a wood block and isready for use in the printing press.
