Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photo Atlas of Mineral Pseudomorphism provides a comprehensive overview on the topic of pseudomorphism—in which one mineral is replaced by another but still maintains its original crystal form—a phenomenon that is far more common than currently thought and is extremely important in understanding the geologic history of rocks. There are many examples of pseudomorphs, but they have never been brought together in a single reference book that features high-resolution, full-color pseudomorph formations together with the original minerals that they have replaced. This book is the essential reference book for mineralogists, geologists or anyone who encounters mineral pseudomorphism in their work. Presents the only reference book on mineral pseudomorph formations Contains 500 high-resolution full color photos, along with a theoretical explanation of the geological processes that resulted in the pseudomorph formation Authored by J. Theo Kloprogge, who has more than 25 years of experience as a mineralogist

Book excerpt: The Periodic Table: Nature’s Building Blocks: An Introduction to the Naturally Occurring Elements, Their Origins and Their Uses addresses how minerals and their elements are used, where the elements come from in nature, and their applications in modern society. The book is structured in a logical way using the periodic table as its outline. It begins with an introduction of the history of the periodic table and a short introduction to mineralogy. Element sections contain their history, how they were discovered, and a description of the minerals that contain the element. Sections conclude with our current use of each element. Abundant color photos of some of the most characteristic minerals containing the element accompany the discussion. Ideal for students and researchers working in inorganic chemistry, minerology and geology, this book provides the foundational knowledge needed for successful study and work in this exciting area. Describes the link between geology, minerals and chemistry to show how chemistry relies on elements from nature Emphasizes the connection between geology, mineralogy and daily life, showing how minerals contribute to the things we use and in our modern economy Contains abundant color photos of each mineral that bring the periodic table to life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise, clear and handy–sized volume, aimed at the undergraduate level, provides an introduction to the observation, description and identifi cation in thin section, using the polarizing microscope, of samples of the commonlyoccurring rocks and minerals. Illustrated with a wealth of full colour thin section photomicrographs, and with the original images enhanced by new examples and a revised text, the book explains how to observe mineral and rock samples under the microscope. The book highlights the important diagnostic features of minerals and deals with all rock types – igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic – each with equal emphasis and authority, giving students the knowledge and confi dence to begin to identify specimens for themselves. While intended for students in geology, geography, civil engineering and materials science, the book stands on its own as a beautiful collection of photomicrographs and a permanent source of reference and fascination for all those interested in the nature and science of the world of rocks and minerals.

Book excerpt: Perhaps the most striking impression gained by a geologist during twenty years of field work with deformed rocks in many parts of the world is that the minor structures in these rocks are surprisingly uniform in their properties and restricted in their variety. In fact, a relatively short and simple list can include all structures which are both of common occurrence and of use to the structural geologist in his attempts to understand the structure and evolution of a deformed geologic body. The photographs in this book have been selected to illustrate as clearly as possible the obvious characteristics of the common minor structures of deformed rocks. I have tried to make this selection truly representative in spite of two factors that have affected the choice. First, I have included only photographs made during my own field work. No doubt the selection could have been greatly improved in both quality and variety by including photographs made by other geologists. Second, the photographs necessarily reflect my own inte rests and not those of every geologist concerned with deformed rocks. Consequently, for example, great emphasis has been placed on folds, whereas faults and joints are entirely omitted.

The first, an introductory section, begins by outlining the general concepts involved in weathering processes, including a number of basic definitions, and the influence of kinetics, porosity and chemical dissolution on both petrography and geochemistry, as well as providing detailed instructions on how to sample a weathered profile (i.e. pristine bed-rock through to the resultant soil). The second section deals with the 'patterns of weathering', including clear descriptions of the degrees and patterns of weathering, as well as primary residues and secondary products. The third section covers 'alteromorphs' and includes a classification scheme that is summarized in colourful, diagrammatic form on the inside book covers for easy reference. The final section, where petrology turns into soil science, covers lithorelics, nodules and pisoliths."--Pub. desc.

It will be useful in training both students and professionals in the difficult technique of recognizing the subtle colour differences between minerals. One particular problem is that the same mineral can be optically quite different in different associations.

Book excerpt: A companion volume to the "Atlas of rock-forming minerals in thin section", this full-colour handbook is designed to be used as a laboratory manual both by elementary students of earth sciences undertaking a study of igneous rocks in thin section under the microscope, and by more advanced students and teachers as a reference work. The book is divided into two parts - Part one is devoted to photographs of many of the common textures found in igneous rocks with brief descriptions accompanying each photograph. Part two illustrates the appearance of examples of some sixty of the commonest (and a few not so common) igneous rock types; each photograph is accompanied by a brief description of the field of view shown. Nearly 300 full-colour photographs are included, and in many cases the same view is shown both in plen-polarized light and under crossed polars. A brief account of how thin sections can be prepared is included as an appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The readers of the first two editions of Stone: Properties, Durabi lity in Man's Environment, were mostly architects, restoration architects of buildings and monuments in natural stone, profes sionals who sought basic technical information for non-geologists. The increasing awareness of rapidly decaying monuments and their rescue from loss to future generations have urged this writer to update the 1973 and 1975 editions, now unavailable and out of print. Due to the 20-year-Iong interval, extensive updating was necessary to produce this new book. The present edition concentrates on the natural material stone, as building stone, dimension stone, architectural stone, and decorative field stones. Recently, the use of stone for thin curtain walls on buildings has become fashionable. The thin slabs exposed to anew, unknown complexity of stresses, resulting in bowing of crystalline marble, has attracted much negative pUblicity. The costs of replacing white slabs of marble on entire buildings with its legal implications have led construction com panies into bankruptcy. We blame many environmental problems on acid rain. Does acid rain really accelerate stone decay that much? Stone preservation is being attempted with an ever-increasing number of chemicals applied by as many specialists to save crumbling stone. Chemists filled this need during a time of temporary job scarcity, while the general geologist missed this opportunity; he was too deeply involved in the search for fossil fuels and metals.

Book excerpt: Humanity’s ever-increasing hunger for mineral raw materials, caused by a growing global population and ever increasing standards of living, has resulted in economic geology becoming a subject of urgent importance. This book provides a broad panorama of mineral deposits, covering their origin and geological characteristics, the principles of the search for ores and minerals, and the investigation of newly found deposits. Practical and environmental issues that arise during the life cycle of a mine and after its closure are addressed, with an emphasis on sustainable and "green" mining. The central scientific theme of the book is to place the extraordinary variability of mineral deposits in the frame of fundamental geological processes. The book is written for earth science students and practicing geologists worldwide. Professionals in administration, resource development, mining, mine reclamation, metallurgy, and mineral economics will also find the text valuable. Economic Geology is a fully revised translation of the the fifth edition of the German language text Mineralische und Energie-Rohstoffe. Students and close collaborators of Georges Millot, the eminent French clay sedimentologist, have put together a book with topics ranging from weathering processes and diagenetic evalution of sediments to sedimentary mineral deposits. The book is of interest to practitioners, advanced students as well as teachers in the above fields.
