Book excerpt: Phonology - the study of how the sounds of speech are represented in our minds - is one of the core areas of linguistic theory, and is central to the study of human language. This handbook brings together the world's leading experts in phonology to present the most comprehensive and detailed overview of the field. Focusing on research and the most influential theories, the authors discuss each of the central issues in phonological theory, explore a variety of empirical phenomena, and show how phonology interacts with other aspects of language such as syntax, morphology, phonetics, and language acquisition. Providing a one-stop guide to every aspect of this important field, The Cambridge Handbook of Phonology will serve as an invaluable source of readings for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, an informative overview for linguists and a useful starting point for anyone beginning phonological research.
Book Synopsis A Guide to Morphosyntax-phonology Interface Theories by : Tobias Scheer
Download or read book A Guide to Morphosyntax-phonology Interface Theories written by Tobias Scheer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the history of the interface between morpho-syntax and phonology roughly since World War II. Structuralist and generative interface thinking is presented chronologically, but also theory by theory from the point of view of a historically interested observer who however in the last third of the book distills lessons in order to assess present-day interface theories, and to establish a catalogue of properties that a correct interface theory should or must not have. The book also introduces modularity, the rationalist theory of the (human) cognitive system that underlies the generative approach to language, from a Cognitive Science perspective. Modularity is used as a referee for interface theories in the book. Finally, the book locates the interface debate in the landscape of current minimalist syntax and phase theory and fosters intermodular argumentation: how can we use properties of morpho-syntactic theory in order to argue for or against competing theories of phonology (and vice-versa)?
Book Synopsis The Phonetics–Phonology Interface by : Joaquín Romero
Download or read book The Phonetics–Phonology Interface written by Joaquín Romero and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of advanced laboratory phonology research papers concerned with the interaction between the physical and the mental aspects of speech and language. The traditional linguistic theoretic distinction between phonetics and phonology is put to the test here in a series of articles that deal with some of the fundamental issues in the field, from first and second language acquisition to segmental and supra-segmental phenomena in a range of different languages. Unique features of this volume are the development of innovative experimental methodologies, advanced techniques of data analysis, latest-generation equipment for the observation of speech, and their combined critical application to the study of the phonetics-phonology interface. The volume is therefore not only of great interest but of outstanding value and importance to anyone who wishes to be completely apprised of the latest advances in this crucial area of phonological research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of phonetic detail within the language system and its interplay with other kinds of linguistic information represent a hotly debated territory. In the current volume, different types of phonetic nuances are examined with a particular focus on their relation to phonological, morphological, and semantic/pragmatic phenomena. These three interfaces - the phonetic-phonological, the phonetic-morphological, and the phonetic-semantic/pragmatic one - are investigated from a variety of angles and by consistently taking the rapport between phonetics and phonology into consideration. In doing so, we provide an up-to-date picture of research dealing with the interaction of distinct linguistic areas, and also discuss the question if and when phonology is needed to mediate between phonetics and other linguistic domains.

Download or read book The Phonology-Morphology Interface written by Jolanta Szpyra-Kozłowska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989. The development of morphological and phonological theory within the broad framework of generative grammar poses a number of important questions concerning the mutual relationship of phonology and morphology. This study aims to answer these questions. On the basis of Polish and English language material, the author examines the most important aspects of phonology-morphology interaction, and suggests the best model with which to describe these phenomena.

Download or read book The Phonology/Phonetics Interface written by Elizabeth C. Zaiga and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A textbook for advanced students that goes beyond basic phonetics and phonology to investigate their interaction. Is speech in the mouth or in the brain? Do we hear with our ears or our minds? The answer is: both. The sounds of language are both physical objects and cognitive constructs. The physical aspects of speech are the province of phonetics: sound waves that are produced by the movement of articulators and received by the ear. Phonology, by contrast, studies cognitive aspects: systematic patterns in the ways that languages combine sounds to create meaning. Many books look at phonology and phonetics as separate disciplines. This book looks at the interaction between the two.

Book Synopsis Explorations of Phase Theory: Interpretation at the Interfaces by : Kleanthes K. Grohmann
Download or read book Explorations of Phase Theory: Interpretation at the Interfaces written by Kleanthes K. Grohmann and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, many issues leading towards refining the model have been identified for a theory of syntax under minimalist assumptions. One of the central questions within the current theoretical model, Phase Theory, is architectural in nature: Assuming a minimal structure of the grammar, how does the computational system manipulate the grammar to construct a well-formed derivation that takes items from the mental lexicon to the interpretive interfaces? This collection addresses this issue by exploring the design of the grammar and the tools of the theory in order to shed light on the nature of the interpretive interfaces, Logical Form and Phonetic Form, and their role in the syntactic computation. The chapters in this volume collectively contribute to a better understanding of the mapping from syntax to PF on the one hand, especially issues concerning prosody and Spell-Out, and semantic interpretation at LF on the other, including interpretive and architectural issues of more conceptual nature. Apart from careful case studies and specific data analysis for a number of languages, the material contained here also has repercussions for Phase Theory in general, theoretical underpinnings as well as modifications of syntactic mechanisms.
Book Synopsis Syntax-Phonology Interface by : Hongming Zhang
Download or read book Syntax-Phonology Interface written by Hongming Zhang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book centers on theoretical issues of phonology-syntax interface based on tone sandhi in Chinese dialects. It uses patterns in tone sandhi to study how speech should be divided into domains of various sizes or levels. Tone sandhi refers to tonal changes that occur to a sequence of adjacent syllables or words. The size of this sequence (or the domain) is determined by various factors, in particular the syntactic structure of the words and the original tones of the words. Chinese dialects offer a rich body of data on tone sandhi, and hence great evidence for examining the phonology-syntax interface, and for examining the resulting levels of domains (the prosodic hierarchy). Syntax-Phonology Interface: Argumentation from Tone Sandhi in Chinese Dialects is an extremely valuable text for graduate students and scholars in the fields of linguistics and Chinese.
Book Synopsis Segmental Structure and Representations by : Jeroen van de Weijer
Download or read book Segmental Structure and Representations written by Jeroen van de Weijer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing Phonological Detail Part I: Segmental Structure and Representations Part II: Syllable, Stress and Sign Part I of Representing Phonological Detail focuses on the latest phonological research on a range of issues. The first main theme in this volume is vowel representation, with special attention paid to topics such as vowel harmony and other vocalic processes (e.g., historical umlaut, vowel epenthesis, and the representation of vowel quality and height). The second main theme is consonant representation and consonantal processes (including laryngeal phonology and stop insertion). Finally, the acquisition of phonology and the interface between phonology and morphosyntax are examined, attending in particular to boundary symbols, morphological blends, and the status of recursion in phonology and syntax.
Book Synopsis Direct Interface and One-Channel Translation by : Tobias Scheer
Download or read book Direct Interface and One-Channel Translation written by Tobias Scheer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following up on the Guide to Morphosyntax-Phonology Interface Theories (2011), written from a theory-neutral point of view, this book lays out the author’s approach to the representational side of the interface. The book is thus about how information is transmitted to phonology when an object is inserted into phonological representations (as opposed to the derivational means, i.e. phase theory today). The idea of Direct Interface is that diacritics such as hash-marks in SPE or prosodic constituency since the early 80s, which mediate between morpho-syntax and phonology, are illegal in a modular environment where computational systems can only process domain-specific vocabulary. Direct Interface instead holds that only truly phonological vocabulary can carry morpho-syntactic information. It is shown that of all representational objects only syllabic space qualifies. Couched in CVCV (or strict CV), i.e. Government Phonology, this insight is then applied in detailed case studies of Belarusian, Corsican, Greek and the exhaustive lexical inventory of sonorant-obstruent-initial words in 13 Slavic languages,. In this sense, the book is the 2nd volume of A Lateral Theory of Phonology (2004).
