Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coventry's coat of arms shows an eagle and a phoenix on either side of the famous "elephant and castle" - why? The eagle was the emblem of Lady Godiva's husband, Leofric, Earl of Mercia. The earl and his countess are forever remembered in Coventry's distant past. The phoenix, a mythical bird which is born again from fire, has become the symbol of the new Coventry, rising from the ashes after so much of the city was destroyed by war. In The Eagle and the Phoenix you can witness some of the dramatic moments in the history of Coventry, through nine stories told by children who saw them: Marcus the young Roman, training horses at the Lunt Fort; Thomas and Anne, plotting with the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots; Daniel and William, viewing a terrible hanging at Gibbet Hill; Tilly the weaver and Amit the Sky Blues fan. Take a journey into Coventry's past - and imagine yourself there.

The Phoenix Rises describes the origins and development of the University and its antecendents, taking the story of university and city through the devastation of the war years and the economic upturn thereafter, right up to the present day. This beautiful hardback portrait will treat a wide range of themes including key academic disciplines, links to regional industry through excellence in design and engineering, the relationship with the city and its cathedrals, and of course the student experience down the years, told through recollections and archival contributions.

Book excerpt: "Phoenix Architecture/Art/Regeneration records a unique experiment in urban regeneration in Coventry. Taking a rundown and forgotten area of the city, it creates a series of new and contrasting public spaces that form a new route from Basil Spence's Cathedral to a new Garden of International Friendship. The garden, and many other aspects of the scheme, celebrate Coventry's association with the international movement for Peace and Reconciliation, following the city's devastating destruction in the Blitz during the Second World War"--Page [4] of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years after the Second Vatican Council, architectural historian Robert Proctor examines the transformations in British Roman Catholic church architecture that took place in the two decades surrounding this crucial event. Inspired by new thinking in theology and changing practices of worship, and by a growing acceptance of modern art and architecture, architects designed radical new forms of church building in a campaign of new buildings for new urban contexts. A focussed study of mid-twentieth century church architecture, Building the Modern Church considers how architects and clergy constructed the image and reality of the Church as an institution through its buildings. The author examines changing conceptions of tradition and modernity, and the development of a modern church architecture that drew from the ideas of the liturgical movement. The role of Catholic clergy as patrons of modern architecture and art and the changing attitudes of the Church and its architects to modernity are examined, explaining how different strands of post-war architecture were adopted in the field of ecclesiastical buildings. The church building’s social role in defining communities through rituals and symbols is also considered, together with the relationships between churches and modernist urban planning in new towns and suburbs. Case studies analysed in detail include significant buildings and architects that have remained little known until now. Based on meticulous historical research in primary sources, theoretically informed, fully referenced, and thoroughly illustrated, this book will be of interest to anyone concerned with the church architecture, art and theology of this period.

Book excerpt: The History of the Church through its Buildings takes the reader to meet people who lived through momentous religious changes in the very spaces where the story of the Church took shape. Buildings are about people, the people who conceived, designed, financed, and used them. Their stories become embedded in the very fabric itself, and as the fabric is changed through time in response to changing use, relationships, and beliefs, the architecture becomes the standing history of passing waves of humanity. This process takes on special significance in churches, where the arrangement of the space places members of the community in relationship with one another for the performance of the church's rites and ceremonies. Moreover, architectural forms and building materials can be used to establish relationships with other buildings in other places and other times. Coordinated systems of signs, symbols, and images proclaim beliefs and doctrine, and in a wider sense carry extended narratives of the people and their faith. Looking at the history of the church through its buildings allows us to establish a tangible connection to the lives of the people involved in some of the key moments and movements that shaped that history, and perhaps even a degree of intimacy with them. Standing in the same place where the worshippers of the past preached and taught, or in a space they built as a memorial, touching the stone they placed, or marking their final resting-place, holding a keepsake they treasured or seeing a relic they venerated, probably comes as close to a shared experience with these people as it is possible to come. Perhaps for a fleeting moment at such times their faces may come more clearly into focus...

Book excerpt: The Coventry Blitz of 14 November 1940 was a key event of the Second World War and in the growth of public consciousness of the destructive power of warfare. The medieval city, already undergoing rapid change, was largely destroyed on that night. The destruction was seen as an opportunity by some including the then City Architect, Donald Gibson. The result was the first of the master plans for post-war redevelopment of Britain's bombed city centres. The redevelopment of Coventry city centre to plans by Gibson and his successors provided an intensely urban and civilised centre, embodying new planning principles. Post-war Coventry was hugely influential and Gibson's ideas helped to shape the rebuilding of other city centres, the post-war new towns and developments in Europe. Despite incremental change in the subsequent decades the planning and architecture of Gibson's city centre are still clearly legible. The modern demands of a growing city on its centre are now very different from those of the post-war years. Coventry needs to grow and plan for its future and change will inevitably affect the city centre. This book aims to inform the public and decision makers of the significance of Coventry, and especially its centre, so that change can be managed in ways that will continue the life, use and enjoyment of the best of Coventry's remarkable post-war heritage.
