Book Synopsis Philosophical Grammar by : Ludwig Wittgenstein
Download or read book Philosophical Grammar written by Ludwig Wittgenstein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1991-01-08 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wittgenstein wrote the Philosophical Grammar during the years 1931 to 1934 - the period just before he began to dictate the Blue Book. Although it is close to the Investigations in some points, and to the Phiosophische Bemerkungen at others, the Philosophical Grammar is an independent work which covers new ground. It is Wittgenstein's fullest treatment of logic and mathematics in their connection with his later understanding of 'proposition', 'sign', and 'system'. He also discusses inference and generality - critisizing views of Frege and Russell as well as earlier views of his own - and the treatment of mathematical proof in this book, especially of inductive or recursive proofs, is deeper and more extensive than previously.

Book Synopsis Speculative Grammar, Universal Grammar, Philosophical Analysis by : Dino Buzzetti
Download or read book Speculative Grammar, Universal Grammar, Philosophical Analysis written by Dino Buzzetti and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers originally presented at a seminar series on Speculative Grammar, Universal Grammar, and Philosophical Analysis, held at the University of Bologna in 1984. The seminars aimed at considering various aspects of the interplay between linguistic theories on the one hand, and theories of meaning and logic on the other. The point of view was mainly historical, but a theoretical approach was also considered relevant. Theories of grammar and related topics were taken as a focal point of interest; their interaction with philosophical reflections on languages was examined in presentations dealing with different authors and periods, ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Book Synopsis Language and Experience in 17th-century British Philosophy by : Lia Formigari
Download or read book Language and Experience in 17th-century British Philosophy written by Lia Formigari and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this volume is the crisis of the traditional view of the relationship between words and things and the emergence of linguistic arbitrarism in 17th-century British philosophy. Different groups of sources are explored: philological and antiquarian writings, pedagogical treatises, debates on the respective merits of the liberal and mechanical arts, essays on cryptography and the art of gestures, polemical pamphlets on university reform, universal language scheme, and philosophical analyses of the conduct of the understanding. In the late 17th-century the philosophy of mind discards both the correspondence of predicamental series to reality and the archetypal metaphysics underpinning it. This is a turning point in semantic theory: language is conceived as the social construction of historical-conventional objects through signs and the study of strategies we use to bridge the gap between the privacy of experience and the publicness of speech emerges as one of the main topics in the philosophy of language.

Book Synopsis Language and Philosophical Problems by : Sören Stenlund
Download or read book Language and Philosophical Problems written by Sören Stenlund and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language and Philosophical Problems investigates problems about mind, meaning and mathematics rooted in preconceptions of language. It deals in particular with problems which are connected with our tendency to be misled by certain prevailing views and preconceptions about language. Philosophical claims made by theorists of meaning are scrutinized and shown to be connected with common views about the nature of certain mathematical notions and methods. Drawing in particular on Wittgenstein's ideas, Sren Stenlund demonstrates a strategy for tracing out and resolving conceptual and philosophical problems. By a critical examination of examples from different areas of philosophy, he shows that many problems arise through the transgression of the limits of the use of technical concepts and formal methods. Many prima facie different kinds of problems are shown to have common roots, and should thus be dealt and resolved together. Such an approach is usually prevented by the influence of traditional philosophical terminology and classification. The results of this investigation make it clear that the received ways of subdividing the subject matter of philosophy often conceal the roots of the problem.

Book Synopsis Philosophical Perspectives on Language by : Robert J. Stainton
Download or read book Philosophical Perspectives on Language written by Robert J. Stainton and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 1996-03-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical theorizing about language now involves an increasing emphasis on empirical work and a renewed convergence with philosophy of mind, formal semantics and logic. This new text reflects this evolution. Philosophical Perspectives on Language is distinguished in several important respects from other introductions to the topic. Rather than looking at philosophy of language as a collection of (at best) loosely related topics—speech acts, demonstratives, sense and reference, truth and meaning, etc.—this book is organized around a unifying theme: language as a system of symbols that is known and used.
Book Synopsis Grammatical Theory and Philosophy of Language in Antiquity by : Pierre Swiggers
Download or read book Grammatical Theory and Philosophy of Language in Antiquity written by Pierre Swiggers and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective volume contains studies in the field of ancient grammar, poetics and philosophy of language. The contributions, written by specialists in the field, focus on central themes in the historiography of ancient linguistics, such as the status of grammar as a discipline in Antiquity, the relationship between poetics and grammatical theory, the constitution and development of the word class system, the descriptive format of grammars, the nature and description of specific word classes, the development of grammatical argumentation. In addition, several methodological issues in the study of ancient grammar and philosophy of language are dealt with: the problem of continuity vs. discontinuity in the history of linguistic thought, the role of schoolroom activities in the development of grammatical description and theory-formation, and problems concerning "tradition", "influence" and "originality" in ancient linguistics. The volume is rounded off with extensive indices of proper names, concepts and technical terms.
