Book Synopsis Views in Philadelphia, and Its Vicinity by :
Download or read book Views in Philadelphia, and Its Vicinity written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Views in Philadelphia, and Its Vicinity: Engraved From Original Drawings Originally the windows of the front and anks of the church, of which there are two rows, were formed with leaden sash, somewhat in the Gothic style; indeed it would seem from the disposition and general arrangement of the various parts of the whole edifice, that a Gothic model had been kept in view by its projectors as far as respects some of the details of its external and interior distribution. The high pitched roof, surrounded by piers and balusters; the subdivision of the anks with pilasters, together with the columnar separation of the nave and side aisles of the interior, indicate strongly some of the leading features of a Gothic model. The proportions of the steeple particularly are good; it was erected from a design by Robert Smith, about 1745 but there are unquestionably many crudities in the details of the building, which mark an era of profusion in architecture that belonged to the anglo-palladian school in the reign of George the Second. The ground under the waving trees and springing grass, where the birds sing and the children play, is literally full of dead men's bones, but the grass is no less green, the sunshine no less bright, on that account, and the dead sleep none the less peacefully, for the life above them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Philadelphia To-day, when it is the American born in the Ghetto, or Syria, or some other remote part of the earth, whose recollections are prized, it may seem as if the following pages called for an apology. I have none to make. They were written simply for the pleasure of gathering to gether my old memories of a town that, as my native place, is dear to me and my new impressions of it after an absence of a quarter of a century. But now I have finished I add to this pleasure in my book the pleasant belief that it will have its value for others, if only for two reasons. In the first place, J.'s drawings which illustrate it are his record of the old Philadelphia that has passed and the new Philadelphia that is passing - a record that in a few years it will be impossible for anybody to make, so con tinually is Philadelphia changing. In the second, my story of Philadelphia, perfect or imperfect, may in as short a time be equally impossible for anybody to repeat, since I am one of those old-fashioned Americans, Ameri can by birth with many generations of American fore fathers, who are rapidly becoming rare creatures among the hordes of new-fashioned Americans who were any thing and everything else no longer than a year or a week. Download or read book The Story of Philadelphia (Classic Reprint) written by Lillian Ione Rhoades and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Philadelphia The public schools should be nurseries of civic virtue. One of their high aims should be to train pupils to intelligent and virtuous citizenship. To secure this end the young should be led to feel an interest in their State and nation. They should know the leading events of history, and be familiar with the heroic deeds of the patriots and statesmen whose courage and wisdom secured our free institutions. Their hearts should be led to beat in sympathy with those lofty sentiments which moved the hearts of the fathers to suffer and die that freedom might live. Especially should the young be familiar with the local events of the city in which they live. They should feel a pride in its institutions and in its past history. Civic pride is the basis of civic duty; and the school can do much to awaken this pride and cultivate this sense of duty by calling attention to the patriotic deeds of the men and women who have helped to shape the city's history. Philadelphia is especially rich in historic associations. In its halls were enunciated those principles of human rights that gave birth to free institutions.
