Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being Heard examines, from their own perspectives and experiences, the lives of young women sexually exploited through prostitution. Putting their voices in the centre of its analysis, the book tries to help us more fully understand the experiences of girls exploited through prostitution, the complex issues of sex trade work and the ways to best respond to the issues. Beginning with a discussion of what little we know about youth prostitution, subsequent chapters address young women’s experiences with community and government programs, issues of self-identity, health and safety concerns, experiences of violence, factors that push young women into and may draw them out of sex trade work, and the effectiveness of Canadian legislation in coming to the aid of young prostitutes. The book is based on a four-year research project undertaken with Prairie women involved in sex trade work as youth and those who provide programming for them.

Book Synopsis Runaway and Homeless Youth by : Josiah Hughes
Download or read book Runaway and Homeless Youth written by Josiah Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no single definition of the term "runaway youth" or "homeless youth". However, both groups of youth share the risk of not having adequate shelter and other provisions, and may engage in harmful behaviours while away from a permanent home. The precise number of homeless and runaway youth is unknown due to their residential mobility and overlap among the populations. Determining the number of these youth is further complicated by the lack of a standardised methodology for counting the population and inconsistent definitions of what it means to be homeless or a runaway. Estimates of the homeless youth exceed one million. Thus homelessness among adolescents and young adults is a major social concern in the United States. In this book, the authors cite research indicating that youth may be the single age group most at risk of becoming homeless, yet comparatively little research has been done in the past decade on this vulnerable population. After reviewing the characteristics of homeless youth, the authors review recent research findings on the homeless youth population and interventions developed to address their housing and service needs. These include interventions directed at youth themselves (education, employment, social skills training) as well as family-focused strategies. The authors conclude with future directions for both research and practice. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

Download or read book Making Work, Making Trouble written by Deborah Brock and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-09-26 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly updated to include events that have occurred in the decade since it was originally published, this second edition of Making Work, Making Trouble re-establishes this work as the pre-eminent study of prostitution in Canada. Detailing the various forces that have presented prostitution as a social problem, Deborah R. Brock examines anti-prostitution campaigns, urban development, new policing strategies, and the responses of the media, the courts, and governments, as well as feminist, rights, and residents' organizations. Paying particular attention to rights and the means of economic survival within global and local realities, this edition includes new material on recent discourse on sex trafficking, migrant sex work, ex-worker rights organizing, and considers the potential impact of the Robert Pickton trial on the practice of sex work. A comprehensive overview of the crucial debates on prostitution, Making Work, Making Trouble is a welcome addition to twenty-first century sociology and criminology.
