Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pharisaism and War Even in January we still talk more of the war than of anything else, and amid our varied conversations it is interesting to notice how the arguments and attitude of certain people first bore and then nauseate us. It is not the strength of their expressions for others use stronger language and are more definite in condemnation of German policy, without producing anything like the same sense of hopeless distaste. Nor can we trace our revolt to those daily prejudices which will have to be surrendered when we commit our lives to the guidance of reason it is born of something noble and Christian within us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and the Bible In every country the Great War has created not merely military and economic problems, but also spiritual problems of many aspects. M. Henri Bergson has remarked that upon the outbreak of the war, France at once changed spiritually - she became like a cathedral, solemn and grave. No one who was in France in those fateful days of August, 1914, could escape that transformation. The air was charged with spiritual awe. A similar effect the War has had in every other country touched by it, though, of course, each has expressed it in its own way. It is not certain to what degree we have been spiritually affected by the War. Perhaps there has not yet been that impact upon our mind and soul, that challenge, that catharsis, which others have experienced, and which has found voice in so many of the literary productions of the past four years. But that it is sure to come, there is not the shadow of a doubt. "Man liveth not by bread alone" - this the War has proved anew. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and War The author, in common with all who desire peace between the nations, owes a debt of gratitude to Norman Angell. For, whether one agrees or disagrees with his arguments in The Great Illusion, it is undeniable that he has brought the question of peace and war prominently and freshly before the public in this and other countries. 80 that peace advocates no longer speak to deaf ears. Hitherto they have found the public unwilling to listen to them, and inclined to view their theories as a mild form of insanity. The Great Illusion has changed this attitude by showing that between civilised states war can bring no gain to the victor, and, under certain circumstances, may damage him even more than the vanquished. At once per petual peace has become an ideal which the practical man can recognise as capable of realisation. The Christian and humanitarian peace advocacy claimed that war is wrong and should therefore be abolished. At this the practical man shook his head and said, War is certainly horrible; it is bad; but it is necessary. It is part of the nature of things; you can't abolish it. Now, if Norman Angell is right in his main contentions, it is no longer possible to say that war cannot be abolished. For it is clearly to the advantage of all men to abolish it; all that stands in the way is human ignorance and prejudice and in every department of life these are constantly being overcome. Undoubtedly the war has gotten on America's sensibilities, but it is not on her conscience. Only here and there does one meet a man who is doing his bit with a sense Of exaltation, as one who has heard in that awful cry for help the voice of his own kin; as one who has had a vision of Christ's tender compassion for the op pressed or of Christ's blasting indignation against the oppressor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War, This War and the Sermon on the Mount Love your enemies, ' verily and indeed - but it is also written, thou shalt love thy neighbour.' Take as literally as you like the words, If a man smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also - yet there is one thing they cannot mean If a man smite thy sister on the cheek look the other way.' If a wanton injury is threatened to one weaker than myself and I have power to prevent that injury, then, if I fail to exercise that power, I become morally a particeps criminis, and no casuistry can absolve me from complicity in the injury itself. No act is more essentially Christlike than the deliverance of the oppressed. Even if in a particular case the threatened party would be willing in the name of Christ to submit to the injury, it is no whit less my duty to prevent the wrong being done - if possible by persuasion, if not by force. The knight-errant riding the world in search of distressed damsels to succour is as good a Christian as the Quaker literally turning the other cheek. If possible by persuasion, if not by force I have written, but it is just to the addition of the words by force that many thoughtful men, Christian and other wise, will demur. Can force ever, it is asked, prevent wrong And, if so, under what circumstances and with what limitations? On the answer to this depends the answer to the further question whether a Christian can ever justify war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prophecy, the War, and the Near East This book goes forth with the earnest prayer that it may stimulate many to search the Scriptures more earnestly, and to watch the signs of the times more carefully, in view Of the great purpose which god is working out in the world today. It is largely in response to the numerous requests which I have received from Christian friends in many directions, that I have humbly endeavoured to outline the difficult though important subject Of Prophecy. And in SO doing I have been fully aware that there are several systems of interpretation which for long centuries have commended themselves to Bible students. But the larger the tree the greater the number of branches, and the fact that there are many interpretations by no means destroys the truth of Prophecy, nor does it militate against our convictions in adopting any one of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sword of Christ and the World War The World War has forced many new, pressing, and perplexing problems upon the preacher. To him has been intrusted the gospel of reconciliation, of peace and good will to men, and how to preach that gospel in a world of war when nation is divided against nation and a man's foes are found even in his own national household, is by no means easy for him to determine. He may be successful in evading or ignoring the problems of the higher criticism and the doctrine of evolution; but war, with its terrible, insistent, and heart-searching questions, is a brutal, stubborn fact that must be met and answered. Let it be granted that the preacher has fallen upon difficult days. New questions which go to the very core of religion and ethics are hurled at him. A hundred new demands are being made upon his time, and when he is asked to give up his service for the advertising of liberty loans or for a discus sion of the problems of food conservation, he is sometimes in doubt as to whether the calls of coun try are the calls of God. This book, in part, is based upon addresses given by the writer to members of his congregation and other audiences, on some of the questions raised by the war. The material, however, has been revised and rearranged, and four of the eight chapters are new. It is an attempt to interpret the gospel and the duties of Christian citizenship in an age of to the people who wait upon our ministry. The au thor has spent a great deal of time in presenting facts and dates in the great world events, so that it can be readily understood by the reader. The balance of the comments are simply assumptions based on developments of the world war, and he trusts the reader will keep this in mind in reading the conclusions as stated in the various comments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reflections on Peace and War When we consider the improvements in sci ence, the refinements of civilization, the schemes of benevolence, and the efforts to promote the religion 5of Jesus Christ, of which the present age boasts, it is truly lamentable to reflect, that this work of destruction and misery is still tole rated, the art Of war is still learned, that plea after plea is still urged in its favor, the passions which lead to war are still excited in the human breast, that was designed to be the abode of humanity, justice, mercy and love. If the practice were confined to those nations and families of the earth, who, sunk into; the lowest scale of ignorance, superstition and dark ness, continue in the barbarous practice of offer ing human sacrifices to their idols, - there might be reasonable grounds to hope, that as the light of civilization and Christianity advanced and shed a benign influence over their benighted condi tion, these clouds of moral darkness would soon be dispelled, and all the nations of the earth join in maintaining universal peace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation of War Philosophy is a love of wisdom, and wisdom is the power of forming the fittest judgments from whatever premises are under consideration. Philosophy is, therefore, an evolutionary system of thought which has as its Objective the survival of the fittest thoughts. While animals progress through the struggles of body, humankind, as distinct from animals, progresses through the struggles Of mind, but with this difference: that, while in animal life every unit must struggle in order to sur vive, in human life the struggles of one great brain will, on occasion, remould an epoch. We find, therefore, that human beings may be divided into two categories-the masters (super men) and the slaves (super-monkeys); in fact, into creators and imitators. This has always been so, and is likely to remain so, for without the second there can be no opposition to the first, and opposition is the manure of progress, and progress, seemingly, is of the will of God. If the aim Of wisdom is to arrive at the fittest judgments, then, indeed, is common-sense the true philosophy of life. To do the most appropriate thing at any moment is what is generally known as a common-sense act in other words, common-sense may be defined as: thought and action adapted to Circum stances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War in Heaven IT is considered, by the writer, due alike to the reader and himself that a brief statement of the circumstances under which the peculiar views in the following pages presented were first, by him, conceived. Having been blest with Christian parents, who required of all their children, as soon as they were able to do so, that each should read a prescribed portion of the Sacred Scriptures on every Sabbath, he acquired, in early life, a habit of frequent and careful reading of that goodbook, and which grew with his growth and strengthened with his strength. At the early age of seventeen, he united with the Church of Christ. When about twenty-one years old, the little society of which he was a member dissolved for want of numbers sufficient to work efficiently, and each member was furnished with a letter of dis mission. He had already engaged in the practice of his profession, and within a few years became so completely absorbed in such duties, and in the care of an increasing family, that he found but little time, Sundays only excepted, for theological reading. For some thirteen years he held such Church letter, and was deprived of all those blessed privileges and safeguards which can only be found inside of regular Church membership. As is usual with young Christians who suffer themselves too much involved in the cares and business of this world, he became far too careless of his dearest interest. His mind was led off and off from the subject of religion; his attention to private devotion and public wor ship grew less and less, and, as a natural sequence, he began to doubt the truth of first one, then of another, and yet another, and so on, of the fundamental doctrines of our holy religion, until he had neared the awful whirlpool of infidelity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vital Issues of the War The first seven sermons in this volume were preached on successive Sundays in April and May and the eighth in September of the present year. Now that the church seems, in the eyes of many, to have fallen from the high esteem in which it was held by a former generation, no doubt a volume of sermons, even on "The Vital Issues of the War," runs grave risk of not being read. Since the war began, however, sharp criticism has been visited upon the pulpit for evading the discussion of its compelling moral and spiritual problems; it needs, therefore, to be made known that all pulpits, to say the least, have not deserved the reproach of failing to utilize this unique opportunity. So my book goes forth, quite without apology, for what it is - the messages of a preacher to his people in the regular course of his ministry, printed as they were delivered, with only the slight revision desirable for publication. Such utterances inevitably reflect a point of view determined in part by the time at which they were spoken. In this they are in nowise exceptional. Magazine articles, or the chapters of a book, must be finished sometime, and must bear internal evidences of their date of composition. Later impressions, especially of the swiftly-moving panorama of a world-war, would modify certain details. Thus, one could not speak now with as much optimism of the Bolshevik rule in Russia as was possible when Sermon IV was preached last April. Still, I have decided to let the sermon stand, as perhaps an over-sympathetic interpretation of the obscure strivings of the Russian democracy, the final outcome of which is still far from apparent. In such a case, one would rather err by undue generosity than by cold-blooded cynicism, which the sermon was intended to rebuke.
