Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential introduction to the organic chemicals industry—in the context of globalization, advances in technology, and environmental concerns Providing 95 percent of the 500 billion pounds of organic chemicals produced in the world, the petroleum and natural gas industries are responsible for products that ensure our present quality of life. Products as diverse as gasoline, plastics, detergents, fibers, pesticides, tires, lipstick, shampoo, and sunscreens are based on seven raw materials derived from petroleum and natural gas. In an updated and expanded Third Edition, Industrial Organic Chemicals examines why each of these chemical building blocks—ethylene, propylene, C4 olefins (butenes and butadiene), benzene toluene, the xylenes, and methane—is preferred over another in the context of an environmental issue or manufacturing process, as well as their individual chemistry, derivatives, method of manufacture, uses, and economic significance. The new edition details the seismic shifts in the world's chemistry industry away from the United States, Western Europe and Japan, transforming the Middle East and Asia-Pacific region, especially China, into major players. The book also details: The impact of globalization on the patterns of worldwide transportation of chemicals, including methods of shipping chemicals The technological advances in the area of polymerization and catalysis, including catalyst design and single-site catalysts Chemicals for electronics, with much new material on conducting polymers, photovoltaic cells, and related materials The discovery of vast reserves of shale gas and shale oil, altering long-term predictions of resource depletion in the United States and other countries Commercial and market aspects of the chemical industry, with coverage of emerging new companies such as INEOS, Formosa Plastics, LyondellBasell, and SABIC With expanded coverage on the vital role of green chemistry, renewables, chemicals and fuels on issues of sustainability and climate change, Industrial Organic Chemicals offers an unparalleled examination of what is at the heart of this multi-billion dollar industry, how globalization has transformed it, and its ever growing role in preserving the Earth and its resources.

Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Industrial Organic Chemicals brings together around 200 detailed and thoroughly edited articles on organic starting materials and intermediates. Based on the very latest edition of Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, the contents represent the most up-to-date source of information available. The 8 volumes of alphabetically arranged articles provide coverage of the manufacturing of chemicals, the design of processes, the operation of chemical plants, and the markets of the products. Internationally respected authors, from industry and academia and from the world's major industrialized countries, provide a complete picture for each chemical. The typical pattern of an article is as follows: - Introduction - Properties - Chemical reactions - Production - Legal aspects - Quality and analysis - Uses - Economic aspects - Toxicology and occupational health - References A keyword index, an author index and a CAS-registry-number index complete the contents of this encyclopedia. Top-quality illustrations, clear diagrams and charts, and the extensive use of tables enhance presentation and provide a unique level of detail. The encyclopedia will be an invaluable source of information for chemists, chemical engineers, patent attorneys, marketing specialists and all those involved in today's chemical industry.

Book excerpt: The first text to organize industrial organic chemistry as a discipline, bridging the gap between academic organic chemistry and real life. Part 1 shows the place of the chemical industry in a modern economy, describing how industrial chemists make a host of organic chemicals from a small number of feedstocks—petroleum, natural gas, and a few agricultural products. Reviews the chemistry of polymer manufacture, and outlines the new organic chemistry based on exotic catalysts. Ends with an examination of the future of the chemical industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey of Industrial Chemistry arose from a need for a basic text dealing with industrial chemistry for use in a one semester, three-credit senior level course taught at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. This edition covers all important areas of the chemical industry, yet it is reasonable that it can be covered in 40 hours of lecture. Also an excellent resource and reference for persons working in the chemical and related industries, it has sections on all important technologies used by these industries: a one-step source to answer most questions on practical, applied chemistry. Young scientists and engineers just entering the workforce will find it especially useful as a readily available handbook to prepare them for a type of chemistry quite different than they have seen in their traditional coursework, whether graduate or undergraduate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of industrial chemistry Chemistry is a challenging and interesting subject for academic study. Its principles and ideas are used to produce the chemicals from which all manner of materials and eventually consumer products are manufactured. The diversity of examples is enormous, ranging from cement to iron and steel, and on to modern plastics which are so widely used in the packaging of consumer goods and in the manufacture of household items. Indeed life as we know it today could not exist without the chemical industry. Its contribution to the saving of lives and relief of suffering is immeasurable; synthetic drugs such as those which lower blood pressure (e. g. /3-blockers), attack bacterial and viral infections (e. g. antibiotics such as the penicillins and cephalosporins) and replace vital natural chemicals which the body is not producing due to some malfunction (e. g. insulin, some vitamins), are particularly noteworthy in this respect. Effect chemicals also clearly make an impact on our everyday lives. Two examples are the use of polytetrafluoroethylene (polytetrafluoroethene Teflon or Fluon) to provide a non-stick surface coating for cooking utensils, and silicones which are used to ease the discharge of bread from baking tins. It should also be noted that the chemical industry's activities have an influence on all other industries, either in terms of providing raw materials or chemicals for quality control analyses and to improve operation, and to treat boiler water, cooling water and effiuents.
