Download or read book A Baby's Cry written by Gillian Gair and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-06-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking a quieter and safer environment for their baby, Anna and Joe, move into a cottage in a small village in Suffolk. One day, Joe loses patience with Anna and accuses her of being overprotective towards the baby - words that come back to haunt him later that day when Ben disappears from his pram. The story then follows Anna and Joe's emotional journey as the police search for Baby Ben. As the weeks pass, and no trace of Ben is found, Anna pulls herself out of her apathy and despair and sets about trying to find him herself with the help of a washed-up, alcoholic reporter, who left a card with the enigmatic message scribbled on the back: - 'I can help you find your son'. 'A Baby's Cry' examines the effects on Anna and Joe, and the rollercoaster ride of emotions they suffer; while also tracing their relationship, as they both deal with the tragedy in different ways. The close, strong relationship they had previously shared suffers under the strain, and neither is sure life will ever be the same again.

Download or read book So I've Heard written by Alan Rich and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and Washington Post music critic Tim Page Penned by veteran music writer, critic, and Grammy nominee Alan Rich, currently a music critic for the alternative paper LA Weekly, this book is a collection of music criticism gleaned from four decades of concert-going, opera-going, and record-listening on both coasts. Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and Washington Post music critic Tim Page provides the book's introduction. Included are reviews and essays on musicians, both well-known and obscure, who have shaped worldwide musical tastes during those years: conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Esa-Pekka Salonen; performers Glenn Gould and the overexploited David Helfgott; composers both familiar (Baroque masters, Mozart, Schubert) and contemporary (John Adams and John Cage). Probing essays include lively insights on music criticism itself and on where (if anywhere) music may (or may not) be heading in the new millennium. His writing drew from the formidable Virgil Thomson praise as "the most readable music reviewer ... our best muckraker."

Book excerpt: * A USA Today Bestseller * Misfit teen Lola Lundy has every right to her anger and her misery. She's failing in school, living in a group home, and social workers keep watching her like hawks, waiting for her to show signs of the horrible mental illness that cost Lola's mother her life. Then, one night, she falls asleep in a storage room in her high school library, where she's seen an old yearbook--from the days when the place was an upscale academy for young scholars instead of a dump. When Lola wakes, it's to a scene that is nothing short of impossible. Lola quickly determines that she's gone back to the past--eighty years in the past, to be exact. The Fall Frolic dance is going full blast in the gym, where Lola meets the brainy and provocative Peter Hemmings, class of '24. His face is familiar, because she's seen his senior portrait in the yearbook. By night's end, Lola thinks she sees hope for her disastrous present: She'll make a new future for herself in the past. But is it real? Or has the major mental illness in Lola's family background finally claimed her? Has she slipped through a crack in time, or into a romantic hallucination she created in her own mind, wishing on the ragged pages of a yearbook from a more graceful time long ago?

Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series, Volume 10 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series, Volume 10 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 558 documents in this volume cover the period from 1 May 1816 to 18 January 1817. During this time, Jefferson expects political upheaval in Great Britain, welcomes the imminent presidential transition from James Madison to James Monroe, and privately suggests substantial amendments to Virginia's constitution. Jefferson occasionally gives legal advice, including an opinion on whether perjury can be committed before a grand jury. He turns down a request to sell Natural Bridge, calculates the latitude of Poplar Forest and Willis's Mountain, receives a large shipment of foreign books, exchanges the last of a series of letters with Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours, and is appointed a visitor of Central College. As before, sojourners flock to Monticello. The Baron de Montlezun and Francis Hall provide informative accounts of Jefferson's home, way of life, and thoughts on many subjects. Jefferson attempts to bring Destutt de Tracy's Treatise on Political Economy into print, offers biographical information for Delaplaine's Repository, and recommends revisions to a forthcoming biography of Patrick Henry. Jefferson and Francis Adrian Van der Kemp trade letters about Jesus's life and teachings, and after the ailing Charles Thomson circulates the mistaken idea that Jefferson has converted to Christianity, correspondents question him about his spiritual beliefs.

Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series, Volume 11 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series, Volume 11 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 584 documents in this volume cover the period from 19 January to 31 August 1817, during which Jefferson devotes much time and energy to founding Central College, the predecessor of the University of Virginia. In May 1817, at its first official meeting, the college's Board of Visitors authorizes land purchases and a subscription campaign that eventually raises more than $44,000. Jefferson also prepares a legal brief for his chancery suit against the directors of the Rivanna Company. After years of disagreements and failed negotiations, he composes and revises a legal statement of his claim to the property in dispute. Although the complaint is submitted to the court in May 1817, the case is not settled until December 1819. In March 1817 Jefferson’s friend James Monroe begins his first term as president. During the summer Jefferson learns of the death of two friends, Madame de Staël Holstein and Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours. Late in the summer he visits Natural Bridge with two of his granddaughters. Jefferson continues to purchase books from Europe with the assistance of George Ticknor, and Stephen Cathalan helps him restock his wine cellar and pantry. Even though Jefferson answers his voluminous correspondence selectively, he still chafes under the burden.
Download or read book Coast of Dreams written by Kevin Starr and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2006-02-14 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From O.J. to Arnold Schwarzenegger, earthquakes to rolling blackouts, silicon valley to riots in the street, California state historian Kevin Starr has assembled the history of the Golden Gate State since 1990 to create a vivid snapshot of a state constantly on the edge of tomorrow. Coast of Dreams captures an extraordinary place, from its rich and exceptionally diverse palette of people, cultures and values; to its economy that is larger than most nations and mirrors the economic state of the country; to a political landscape so roiled that a Governor can be recalled scant months after his re-election and replaced by a Hollywood action star. This is a book that is sweeping in scope, intimate in detail and altogether fascinated with the splendor of California.
