This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Impacts of Toxic Chemicals presents a comprehensive, yet readable account of the known disturbances caused by all kinds of toxic chemicals on both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Topics cover the sources of toxicants, their fate and distribution through the planet, their impacts on specific ecosystems, and their remediation by natural systems. Each chapter is written by well-known specialists in those areas, for the general public, students, and even scientists from outside this field. The book intends to raise awareness of the dangers of chemical pollution in a world dominated by industry and globalization of resources. Because the problems are widespread and far reaching, it is hoped that confronting the facts may prompt better management practices at industrial, agricultural and all levels of management, from local to governmental, so as to reduce the negative impacts of chemical contaminants on our planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water covers about two-thirds of the surface of earth, but only 0.627 percent of this water is the sweet surface and subsurface water available for the survival of freshwater organisms including man (1,2). Some of this fresh or sweet water lies in practically uninhabitable regions (rivers: }1ackenzie in Canada; Amazon in Central America; Ob, Yenesey, and Lenta in Siberia, etc.). Also, most of the major rivers (the Mississippi in U.S.A., the Rhine in Europe, the Volga in U.S.S.R., the Ganges in India, etc.), because they flow through agricultural land or urban and industrial areas, have become highly contaminated with chemicals (3). This leaves us with shrinking resources of sweet surface water. In the United States, the dependable supplies of this water are already dwindling in cities like New York and Los Angeles and states like New Mexico and Texas (3).

Book Synopsis Assessing Risks to Endangered and Threatened Species from Pesticides by : Committee on Ecological Risk Assessment Under FIFRA and ESA
Download or read book Assessing Risks to Endangered and Threatened Species from Pesticides written by Committee on Ecological Risk Assessment Under FIFRA and ESA and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) are responsible for protecting species that are listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and for protecting habitats that are critical for their survival. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for registering or reregistering pesticides under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and must ensure that pesticide use does not cause any unreasonable adverse effects on the environment, which is interpreted to include listed species and their critical habitats. The agencies have developed their own approaches to evaluating environmental risk, and their approaches differ because their legal mandates, responsibilities, institutional cultures, and expertise differ. Over the years, the agencies have tried to resolve their differences but have been unsuccessful in reaching a consensus regarding their assessment approaches. As a result, FWS, NMFS, EPA, and the US Department of Agriculture asked the National Research Council (NRC) to examine scientific and technical issues related to determining risks posed to listed species by pesticides. Specifically, the NRC was asked to evaluate methods for identifying the best scientific data available; to evaluate approaches for developing modeling assumptions; to identify authoritative geospatial information that might be used in risk assessments; to review approaches for characterizing sublethal, indirect, and cumulative effects; to assess the scientific information available for estimating effects of mixtures and inert ingredients; and to consider the use of uncertainty factors to account for gaps in data. Assessing Risks to Endangered and Threatened Species from Pesticides, which was prepared by the NRC Committee on Ecological Risk Assessment under FIFRA and ESA, is the response to that request.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on the Adverse Effects of Pesticide Pollution in Aquatic Ecosystems by : Wani, Khursheed Ahmad
Download or read book Handbook of Research on the Adverse Effects of Pesticide Pollution in Aquatic Ecosystems written by Wani, Khursheed Ahmad and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Certain types of pesticides are widely used in agriculture in all parts of the world due to their relatively low cost, broad spectrum of activity, and high efficiency. These pollutants contaminate not only the surrounding soils and water but, in many cases, also enter into the drinking water. The Handbook of Research on the Adverse Effects of Pesticide Pollution in Aquatic Ecosystems provides emerging research exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of the prevention of accumulation of toxic pollutants such as agrochemicals and organochlorine pesticides in aquatic ecosystems and applications within ecology and agriculture. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as pesticide monitoring, metabolites, and risk assessment, this book is ideally designed for scientists, researchers, engineers, policymakers, agricultural specialists, industrialists, academicians, and students seeking current research on the risks of water contaminants in small ecosystems.

Book Synopsis Ecological Risks of Pesticides in Freshwater Ecosystems by : T.C.M. Brock
Download or read book Ecological Risks of Pesticides in Freshwater Ecosystems written by T.C.M. Brock and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature review of freshwater model ecosystem studies with insecticides was performed to assess the NOECecosystem for individual compounds, to compare these threshold levels with water quality standards, and to evaluate the ecological consequences of exceeding these standards. Studies were judged appropriate for this purpose if the test systems simulated a realistic freshwater community, if the experimental design was generally sound (ANOVA or regression design; exposure concentrations described), and if published not earlier than 1980. Most studies dealt with organophosphates (predominantly single applications) and synthetic pyrethroids (mostly repeated applications) in standing waters. Structural endpoints were more sensitive than functional ones. The most sensitive taxa were representatives of the crustaceans, insects and fish. Most studies tested relatively high concentrations, with even lowest concentrations showing effects. An NOECeco could therefore be established for a limited number of compounds only. Based on toxic units, safe threshold values were more or less the same for compounds with a similar mode of action. This also accounted for the nature and magnitude of direct effects at higher concentrations. Usually, indirect effects were reported at higher concentrations than those for direct effects. Although laboratory single species toxicity tests may not allow predictions on (exact) ecological effects, some generalizations on direct effects and recovery can be made with respect to the acute EC50 of the most sensitive standard test species. Safe concentrations, as set for water quality standards, appear to be protective. Depending on exposure regime, the NOECeco is generally in the range of (0.1-0.01) x EC50 of the most sensitive standard test species. Recovery of sensitive endpoints usually takes place within two months after the last application when peak concentrations stay lower than (0.1-1) x EC50 of the most sensitive standard test species.
Book Synopsis Manual of Acute Toxicity by : Foster Lee Mayer
