Book excerpt: A number of major new accelerator facilities, which have shaped the activities of many physicists for the better part of a decade: SLC, LEP, HERA, has been completed. The new generation of high-luminosity pp supercolliders, LHC, SSC and Eloisatron (ELN), represents the great challenge of subnuclear physics. In this challenge the crucial problem is the design of a superdetector. It is clear that building the detectors will be the bottleneck for the Supercolliders. The CERN-LAA project is a concerted effort to solve the problems imposed by the harsh experimental conditions, under which the new physics has to be studied. It is conceptually and practically a unique effort. This Workshop brought together the physicists working on the LAA project and their reports are found in this volume.

For this reason, the University of Bologna and its Academy of Sciences, following the Gugliemo Marconi Centenary and the Luigi Galvani Bicentenary Celebrations, decided to call attention to the major achievements of their most distinguished members, in science and technology. This invaluable volume presents a series of inventions and technological developments, some thought of and directly implemented by Professor Antonino Zichichi, others suggested and developed under his leadership, all of them having contributed to the discovery of new particles and new phenomena in the field of subnuclear physics. The book was conceived by an eminent scientist, Professor Dr Björn H Wiik, Director of Germany's most prestigious physics laboratory, DESY (Hamburg). It would not be published were it not for Professor Dr Albrecht Wagner, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, and Dr Horst Wenninger from CERN (Geneva), the greatest European physics laboratory.

Book excerpt: The present volume is based on the proceedings of the 12th Workshop of the INFN ELOISATRON Project, held at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture (EMCSC), Erice (frapani), Sicily, Italy, in the period September 15-20, 1990. The proceedings deal with the presentation of "New Technologies for Supercolliders". Three new energy frontiers (16,40 and 200 TeV) are now opened up for the future of Subnuclear Physics. Basic problems above the Fermi-energy are crowding up: but no one knows the energy levels needed for their solution. This is why the technology for experiments with the new generation of Supercolliders needs to be pursued having in mind the problems which are of common interest in the three energy frontiers. The primary purpose of the Workshop was to contribute towards the highest energy limit in the search for new instruments and new technologies. Furthermore, the present status and performances of various detector technologies were reviewed. The possible options for a powerful apparatus whose goal would be the discovery of the top, Higgs and SUSY particles in a very high energy, high rate environment, were finally analysed. The Workshop was sponsored by the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the Italian Ministry of Education, the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research and the Sicilian Regional Government. We are thankful to the staff of EMCSC for their efficient and warm support.

Book excerpt: The possible upgrade of LHC or a future generation of colliders at the extreme limits of energy and luminosity will require detectors based on very advanced technological solutions to fully exploit the physics opportunities offered. Major steps must be taken to design and realize devices that are able not only to handle very high rates but also to cope with the very harsh radiation environment without suffering any performance degradation. This book reviews the present status, current limits and recent developments in detection techniques and related aspects (simulation, signal acquisition, tracking, particle identification, etc.). Novel ideas in this domain are discussed with emphasis on the directions in which improvements in proven techniques are desired. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: ? Book excerpt: This volume describes the critical issues involved in scaling the technology of proton synchrotrons to operate at energies much larger than those of existing accelerators. Luminosity limitions and interdependence of machine characteristics are analyzed. The second section presents analyses of the detector technologies needed to utilize a hadron super collider at the highest energies and luminosities.

Book excerpt: This volume stresses the necessity of image processing for future high energy physics detectors (indeed the signals — 1 megabyte of data or more, every 16 nanoseconds — will have 2D-spatial-topology-like images; only the processing/decision rates are much higher). The main issues presented are: new detectors, algorithms for tracking and pattern recognition, dedicated archi-tectures, benchmarking studies on commercially avaliable machines, mixed VLSI technologies, neural networks.
