Book excerpt: Personnel neutron dosimeters using a number of different techniques have been developed for routine use in neutron fields, but all of these dosimeters must be carefully corrected to account for the fact that their response is critically dependent upon the energy distribution of the neutron field. At present, personnel neutron dosimeters are typically calibrated in a standard neutron field (e.g., 252Cf or D2O-moderated 252Cf)- but may then be applied in neutron fields that vary considerably from the calibration field. Some widely used personnel dosimeters, such as TLD-albedo dosimeters, overrespond to low energy neutrons and therefore deliver high readings in fields that are more moderated than the standard field.

Book excerpt: The personnel neutron exposure potential at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is more diverse than at many other facilities, due to the wide range of neutron producing activities. Albedo energy response problems in the face of the diversity of sources, and a concern about possible photon interferences with the neutron albedo response, have prompted development of some additional dosimetry techniques to augment the personnel monitoring program. This work now consists of two programs - the dosimeter/spectrometer (DOSPEC) in which track etch detectors are added to the albedo badge to provide some energy evaluation and gamma insensitivity, and development of solid state thin film MOS detectors to provide a real time, gamma insensitive dosimeter.

Book excerpt: A solid state track recording type dosimeter is disclosed to measure the time dependence of the absolute fission rates of nuclides or neutron fluence over a period of time. In a primary species an inner recording drum is rotatably contained within an exterior housing drum that defines a series of collimating slit apertures overlying windows defined in the stationary drum through which radiation can enter. Film type solid state track recorders are positioned circumferentially about the surface of the internal recording drum to record such radiation or its secondary products during relative rotation of the two elements. In another species both the recording element and the aperture element assume the configuration of adjacent disks. Based on slit size of apertures and relative rotational velocity of the inner drum, radiation parameters within a test area may be measured as a function of time and spectra deduced therefrom.

Based on recent calibration data and the results of the TMI-2 SSTR neutron dosimetry, the amount of fuel present is estimated to be 1.7 +- 0.6 kg. This value is in excellent agreement with a value determined independently by Compton recoil gamma-ray spectrometry. Sources of uncertainty in and proposed refinements of the present SSTR measurements are discussed.

Book excerpt: Solid-state track recorder (SSTR) neutron dosimetry has been conducted in the Three-Mile Island Unit (TMI-2) reactor cavity (i.e., the annular gap between the pressure vessel and the biological shield) for nondestructive assessment of the fuel distribution. Two axial stringers were deployed in the annular gap with 17 SSTR dosimeters located on each stringer. SSTR experimental results reveal that neutron streaming, upward from the bottom of the reactor cavity region, dominates the observed neutron intensity. These absolute thermal neutron flux observations are consistent with the presence of a significant amount of fuel debris lying at the bottom of the reactor vessel. A conservative lower bound estimated from these SSTR data implies that there are at least 2 tonnes of fuel, which is roughly 4 fuel assemblies, at the bottom of the vessel. The existence of significant neutron streaming also explains the high count rate observed with the source range monitors (SRMs) that are located in the TMI-2 reactor cavity.

Book excerpt: As a result of the Three Mile Island Unit (TMI-2) accident on March 28, 1979, fuel debris was dispersed into the primary coolant and auxilliary systems of the reactor. The presence of fuel may be traced by using the neutron activity which is associated with the burn-in of higher actinides (about 300 neutrons/sec/kgU). Solid state track recorder (SSTR) neutron dosimetry is the most sensitive technique for measuring low neutron fluxes. Hence, neutron dosimetry is being performed at TMI-2 to locate fuel debris and subsequently aid the reactor recovery effort. Herein, the results of a scoping measurement on the fuel content of TMI-2 Makeup Demineralizer A are reported along with relevant calibration measurements. The total amount of fuel estimated in Demineralizer A, 1.7 kg, corresponds to a total neutron source of about 400 neutrons/sec. At the detector positions, data were obtained with neutron fluxes as low as 10−3 n/sec/cm2, demonstrating the extreme sensitivity of the SSTR method.
