Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wagner In accordance with the general aim of the series, this book aims in the first place at being useful; that is, it is intended rather as a guide and a help to the plain man than a full critical study of Wagner. And since we have so little opera in this country, and the plain man hears most of his Wagner in the concert-room, an attempt has been made to render what he hears there more comprehensible to him. In telling the stories of the operas, for example, an eye has been had to the concert-goer who is likely to hear no more than detached fragments from them, which fragments, however, only tell half their story to him if he is ignorant of the opera as a whole. In selecting the musical quotations the same purpose has been kept in view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wagner Stories: Retold From the Music-Dramas Of initiation is generally made far too-formidable. The unfortunate novice is plied with information about leading motives and musical characteriza tion till he goes to the Opera like a nervous schoolboy trying to remember his lesson, and has his mind so concentrated on details that the work as a whole too Often produces no intelligible effect upon him. I would like to assure the amateur who is as yet unacquainted with these masterpieces that all this semi-masonic mystery Of initiation is quite unnecessary. Book Synopsis Letters of Richard Wagner to Emil Heckel by : Wm Ashton Ellis
Download or read book Letters of Richard Wagner to Emil Heckel written by Wm Ashton Ellis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Richard Wagner to Emil Heckel: With a Brief History of the Bayreuth Festivals Rundschau my father last year jotted down his reminiscences of Richard Wagner. Shortly afterwards Frau Wagner gave her most gracious consent to the publication of all the master's letters to my father. The next step, therefore, obviously was to publish both reminiscences and letters in one and the same volume. I undertook their combination. In order to weld the two into one whole, a complete remodelling of the reminiscences was unavoidable. Their subjective character has been preserved, however, even where it was tinged with a certain polemical colour from the days of war. As to Wagner's letters themselves, in very few cases has it been requisite to make omissions. These are scrupulously indicated in the text. Since, according to Bismarck's epigram, the publication of private letters almost always sets their author in his shirt-sleeves on the balcony, many a circumstantial explanation of minor points has become necessary, not to give spiteful neighbours too many opportunities for misconstruction. The reproducing of such details undoubtedly thrusts the narrator more into the foreground than he himself could wish y'et, in a book of memoirs, that danger is not easy to avoid. Does it really need apology? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
