Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Private John Henry Cammack: A Soldier of the Confederacy, 1861-1865 to Which Is Added Press Notices and Other Papers Containing Final Tribute to His Memory It, was this fine sense of humor that stayed with him to his last day; which smoothed over the rough places, and lent radiance to the war stories that were told in the family circle. Ten years ago members of the family and friends began urging him to write out his personal story of the war. He demurred because he thought it would seem egotistic, then he claimed that he was a poor writer, that the events had happened so long ago that he could not recall them and that nobody would be interested in the affair anyway. But, after repeated urging, he began making his notations. These were written under widely varied circum stances and; it is a great wonder that there is any coherence to the narrative. Some notes were preparedon the front porch at home, some on trains, some at hotels in Florida, others on long trips, others at the office. Despite this wide variety the story as told is regular, consistent, coherent, chronological and lacks very little in giving exact dates and names, although most of the writing was done nearly a half century after the events transpired. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many memoirs of the American Civil War were written, as John Gill's was, for the eyes of family and friends only. It is our good fortune that their accounts survived. One of the benefits of private publishing was that the author felt less necessity to censor themselves or conform their writing to prevailing sentiments. As an unreconstructed Rebel, John Gill writes of the horrors of the war, the loss of good friends, and unfortunately a longing for the days when slavery kept his world in the order in which he was accustomed. One wonders how his descendants would read this today. Front-line letters and diaries of the Civil War bring an immediacy to a long-ago event and connect us to these everyday men and women who lived it. Gill fought at Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, and many other important battles. For the first time, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happened to the hundreds of thousands of men in the Union and Confederate armies after they lay down their arms? According to William Holberton, many of these men had miles to travel before they were discharged from service, and the passage of these miles included some rather unique situations and experiences. As always, there was bureaucratic red tape and mishandled orders, and in some cases, tragic accidents, such as the Sultana disaster. Beginning with the surrender at Appomattox Court House, the author takes the reader through all the aspects and phases of demobilization, including the Grand Review in Washington, the desertions of soldiers overly eager to return home, the differences between Union and Confederate demobilization, the repatriation of prisoners of war, and the deferred demobilization of many black troops. The late William Holberton was a retired priest living in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He spent the years since his retirement researching and writing Homeward Bound, his first book. He had previously published related articles in magazines such as Civil War Times Illustrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about place and Civil War memory, but how do we personally remember and commemorate this part of our collective past? How do battlefields and other historic places help us understand our own history? What kinds of places are worth remembering and why? In this collection of essays, some of the most esteemed historians of the Civil War select a single meaningful place related to the war and narrate its significance. Included here are meditations on a wide assortment of places--Devil's Den at Gettysburg, Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, the statue of William T. Sherman in New York's Central Park, Burnside Bridge at Antietam, the McLean House in Appomattox, and more. Paired with a contemporary photograph commissioned specifically for this book, each essay offers an unusual and accessible glimpse into how historians think about their subjects. In addition to the editors, contributors include Edward L. Ayers, Stephen Berry, William A. Blair, David W. Blight, Peter S. Carmichael, Frances M. Clarke, Catherine Clinton, Stephen Cushman, Stephen D. Engle, Drew Gilpin Faust, Sarah E. Gardner, Judith Giesberg, Lesley J. Gordon, A. Wilson Greene, Caroline E. Janney, Jacqueline Jones, Ari Kelman, James Marten, Carol Reardon, Aaron Sheehan-Dean, Brenda E. Stevenson, Elizabeth R. Varon, and Joan Waugh.
