Book excerpt: How do poems remember? What kinds of memory do poems register that factual, chronological accounts of the past are oblivious to? What is the self created by such practices of memory? To answer these questions, Uta Gosmann introduces a general theory of 'poetic memory,' a manner of thinking that eschews simple-minded notions of linearity and accuracy in order to uncover the human subject's intricate relationship to a past that it cannot fully know. Gosmann explores poetic memory in the work of Sylvia Plath, Susan Howe, Ellen Hinsey, and Louise GlYck, four contemporary American poets writing in a wide range of styles and discussed here for the first time together. Drawing on psychoanalysis, memory studies, and thinkers from Nietzsche and Benjamin to Halbwachs and Kristeva, Gosmann uses these demanding poets to articulate an alternative, non-empirical model of the self in poetry. Plath, the quintessential 'confessional' poet, faces the precariousness of personal memory and first suffers, but then sardonically embraces the most horrific and vulgar fragments from the storehouse of collective memory. Howe, the experimentalist language poet, becomes the rememberer of marginal or 'nonconformist' figures, whose eccentricities, incoherences, and silences are the very grounds that enable her to inhabit the past. Hinsey, the lesser known of these poets who writes in the European tradition of poetry of witness, creates 'cities of memory' for us to dwell in, allowing us to imagine the past's spatial and temporal texture and its personal significance in fresh ways. GlYck, the 'post-confessional,' expands the memory of the self by enmeshing personal and archetypal memory via the persona of Persphone, a generative confluence which leaves both kinds of memory transformed. When these poets look at the past, they perceive its flawed representations, its lack of certainty, its margins and gaps, its traces in space, its deep marks in the psyche. They share an intuitive certainty of self as being other, and they look in different places to find what was split off, forgotten, and psychically lost. They use words, which are complex bits of memory, to push against encrusted structures or apparent boundaries of the mind and seek to represent more fluid states of consciousness. Poetic language—-riven with metaphor, unrestricted by familiar forms of logic—-is especially conducive to the work of poetic memory. Poetic memory embraces a vision of the self as malleable and mysterious, characterized by a radical otherness, and shaped by unconscious forces, while it remains open for continual imaginative reinvention. Through the practice of poetic memory, to speak with Plotinus, the soul 'is and becomes what it remembers.'

The book presents a microhistorical analysis of the premiere of the melodrama Pers?phone at the Paris Opera on April 30th, 1934, engaging with the collaborative, transnational nature of the production. Author Tamara Levitz demonstrates how these collaborators-- Igor Stravinsky, Andr? Gide, Jacques Copeau, and Ida Rubinstein, among others-used the myth of Persephone to perform and articulate their most deeply held beliefs about four topics significant to modernism: religion, sexuality, death, and historical memory in art. In investigating the aesthetic and political consequences of the artists' diverging perspectives, and the fall-out of their titanic clash on the theater stage, Levitz dismantles myths about neoclassicism as a musical style. The result is a revisionary account of modernism in music in the 1930s. As a result of its focus on the collaborative performance, this book differs from traditional accounts of musical modernism and neoclassicism in several ways. First and foremost, it centers on the performance of modernism, highlighting the theatrical, performative, and sensual. Levitz places Christianity in the center of the discussion, and questions the national distinctions common in modernist research by involving a transnational team of collaborators. She further breaks new ground in shifting the focus from "history" to "memory" by emphasizing the commemorative nature of neoclassic listening rituals over the historicist stylization of its scores, and contends that modernists captured on stage and in philosophical argument their simultaneous need and inability to mourn the past. The book as a whole counters the common criticism that neoclassicism was a "reactionary" musical style by suggesting a more pluralistic, ambivalent, and sometimes even progressive politics, and reconnects musical neoclassicism with a queer classicist tradition extending from Winckelmann through Walter Pater to Gide. Modernist Mysteries concludes that 1930s modernists understood neoclassicism not as formalist compositional approaches but rather as a vitalist art haunted by ghosts of the past and promissory visions of the future.

During this time, Demeter allows the vegetation to once again sprout, but when Persephone returns to the Underworld the Goddess of Fertility once again withholds her gifts. Thus the seasons have been created. Continuing on the story explains the role Persephone assumes as Queen of the Dead, and tells several tales of mortals who risked everything by entering into the Underworld. Orpheus travels for weeks to beg the Goddess of Death to return his wife Eurydice to life; the Lapth prince Pirithous, with the help of his companion Theseus, tries to kidnap Persephone and make her his bride, for their foolishness they are turned into statues; four years later when the hero Hercules enters the Underworld as one of his Twelve Labors he is able to free his cousin Theseus Other tales within the story include that of Psyche and Eros, followed by Adonis who was raised by Persephone, and finally the story of how the new God Dionysus was created. The last part explains how with the beginning of Christianity the Old Gods were demoted into demons and without the daily offerings they became accustomed to, they began to fade. Only the strongest of the gods survived during this period. With the beginning of the new century hope was returned as the Old Religions were beginning to be revived. Isadora Marie is a Wiccan living in the metro Chicago area with her life mate and their canine and feline companions. Isadora grew up studying the Greek myths and as a child was fascinated with all the different Gods, Goddesses and heroes that populated them. When Isadora became a Wiccan it was these same Gods and Goddesses who became important not only in rituals, but in her life. She currently works in a history museum and her work around the artifacts of several different countries only increased her love for mythology. Though Isadora has worked with Gods and Goddess of several different cultures, it was those of Ancient Greece, from her childhood that she felt the closet connection to and after several decades of studying these myths she felt that it was time to tell a more modern version of one of her favorites, that of the Goddess Persephone. Since her background is in art and design, Isadora has been working on several projects to incorporate this element into her spirituality. A current project is developing a photographic Tarot deck, which included several of the Goddesses of Greece along with those of India and Egypt. All of her artistic projects are not only a work of love, but she hopes that they will inspire others to find the beauty in the old myths.
