Book excerpt: Suzanne Gossett offers a full and critical performance history, with an introduction showing how the play's performance history has paralled the criticism. It then gives an interpretation of this two-generation romance, with its successive male and female central characters, based on a reading 'through the family', and influenced by the feminist and new historicist criticism of the last two decades. The edition integrates cumulative research on Shakespeare's collaborative authorship and the transmission of the text without rewriting the play or ignoring years of emendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pericles, Prince of Tyre is perhaps one of the least known plays by the wonderful and incomparable English playwright, William Shakespeare. That fact does not make it any less intriguing or well written, it only makes it a rarer gem worthy of exploration for any reader interested in the works of Shakespeare. This play puts forth unique elements with its exploration of high seas adventure, discord, royalty, and romance. It's a dramatic, emotional, literary thrill-ride that promises to be entertaining for readers who are familiar with Shakespeare and enjoy his other work, and for any readers who enjoys the theater and reading plays. The main protagonist, Pericles, is tested throughout the course of the play, enduring a shipwreck, participating in a tournament of strength, and winning a bride to love and care for him. Pericles sees the world as full of adventure and his boat as his vessel of fate. But his newly acquired bride doesn't quite see eye to eye with him, and the two lovebirds quickly find themselves in dire straits as a harrowing shipwreck threatens their lives together and the life of their child. Nearby villains hide in the shadows and plot against them in the hopes of destroying them and seizing power. In the end, Pericles finds hope for his child, that she may live a safe and happy life while he struggled to do so in his youth. Pericles, Prince of Tyre is a different take from the typical plays of Shakespeare but certainly worthy of being included in this lofty cannon. For readers who enjoy drama, the theater, or history, this is an entertaining and exciting play that lends itself to drama and humor in equal doses. This play is also exciting for individuals familiar with Shakespeare's work as well as readers who have yet to pick up one of his many plays. Book excerpt: Perhaps one of Shakespeare's most adventure-filled plays, "Pericles" follows the extended sailing journeys of a young prince. Pericles is forced to flee Antioch when he correctly guesses a riddle that reveals the incestuous activity of King Antiochus. Unable to stay at home in Tyre because of Antiochus' vengeance, he sails away and ends up shipwrecked in Pentapolis, where he fights for and wins a princess named Thaisa. The trials and tribulations of this couple and their daughter Marina fill the remaining acts of "Pericles" with grief and trepidation, as well as joy and a truly heartwarming reunion. A laudable component of Shakespeare's collection of plays, "Pericles, Prince of Tyre" is a compelling story of family and struggle that resonates with readers even today.

Book excerpt: Pericles was one of the most popular plays of its time, and it has regained much of that popularity today. In a wide-ranging introduction, Roger Warren draws on his experience of the play in rehearsal and performance to explore the reasons for this enduring popularity. Unfortunately Pericles survives only in a corrupt text, the Quarto of 1609, in which many passages are nonsensical and others appear to be missing altogether. Earlier editions have merely cleaned-up the Quarto, but this edition offers a conjectural reconstruction of what the original play might have been like. It draws upon George Wilkin's The Painful Adventures of Pericles (1608) to emend some of the errors and missing material. It does so in the belief that the play is a collaboration between Shakespeare and Wilkins. The entire Quarto text is reprinted in an appendix, together with the passages from Wilkin's narrative that have particularly contributed to the reconstruction, so that readers can see for themselves how the reconstruction has been made.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's History of Pericles, Prince of Tyre: Edited With Notes Shakespeare's part of this play is merely a rough sketch, which he seems to have thrown aside after making it; and this, like the inferior stuff used by another, or others, in finishing it for the stage, was wretchedly printed in the early editions. The text of all these is corrupt and confused almost beyond de scription. Many of the more manifest errors and imperfections were corrected by Malone, the first editor who gave the text serious attention. His successors have continued the work of emendation with varying success; but not a few passages have baffled all their efforts and must probably remain in hopeless, obscurity. The chief results of this scholarly labour are recorded in my notes. They have an interest for advanced stu dents and critical readers. Of course the play is never read in secondary schools, and seldom in the colleges or in Shakespeare clubs. Book excerpt: Pericles, Prince of Tyre is a Jacobean play written at least in part by William Shakespeare and included in modern editions of his collected works despite questions over its authorship, as it was not included in the First Folio. Whilst various arguments support that Shakespeare is the sole author of the play (notably DelVecchio and Hammond's Cambridge edition of the play), modern editors generally agree that Shakespeare is responsible for almost exactly half the play—827 lines—the main portion after scene 9 that follows the story of Pericles and Marina.[a] Modern textual studies indicate that the first two acts of 835 lines detailing the many voyages of Pericles were written by a mediocre collaborator, which strong evidence suggests to have been the victualler, panderer, dramatist and pamphleteer George Wilkins.
