It also examined the habits of connected educators who are collaborating with international colleagues. Thirty-one educators participated in this qualitative study to answer three research questions. The research data were collected using a survey, open-ended questionnaire, and phone interviews. The study indicated that educators are leveraging social media and Web 2.0 tools to collaborate and share professional practices. The study also found that many of the educators in this study sought out this alternative form of virtual professional development because of an internal drive to improve student achievement in their own district, schools, and classrooms.

The purpose of this study is to better understand the beliefs and perspectives of those virtual community participants who engage in community development in a national network of practitioners. Q-Method, a mixed-methods research design, was utilized to study the subjective opinions of participants within the virtual community of practice. Q-Method was used to identify perspectives on sustainable management and development of a virtual community of practice established by the Community Learning Exchange. Initial interviews, an online questionnaire and literature reviews were conducted to build a concourse of statements. Then, thirty-one participants from the virtual community completed online sorts of the Q-Study cards according to their own beliefs and subjective opinions about virtual communities of practice. Post-sort interviews were also conducted to elicit explanations about participant sorts. The Q-Sorts were factor analyzed to reveal statistical correlations among the participants. Data analysis indicated four statistically significant factors. Data also emerged as to why these participants choose to engage online (or not) in this particular virtual community of practice. Finally, a conceptual framework was used to examine participants' beliefs about engagement within a virtual community. The findings of this study generate insights into virtual communities of practice and provide researchers, policy makers, and practitioners information about this rapidly expanding field. The study demonstrates the value of Q-Method in characterizing the views of virtual community participants toward online engagement and accommodating these views and beliefs in a virtual community of practice.

Book excerpt: This study sought to test whether multidimensional professional development programs are preferable to a traditional one, which, typically, consists of taking a graduate course. It compared teachers' perceptions about the effects of three programs for professional development on their teaching practice and student performance. Two of the programs, the Arts Integration Program and Job Shadowing Institute, were multidimensional models of professional development. The third was Technology Training, a traditional model of professional development. The purpose of the study was to contribute to the body of knowledge about teachers' perceptions of the effect of professional development on their teaching practice and their students' learning. The study included elementary, middle, and high school teachers as participants and survey respondents. It spanned three years. Descriptive data were collected to provide an accurate description of the three programs. Participant observations of professional development sessions, informal and formal interviews of teachers, administrators, and facilitators were among the data collection tools used during the first two years of the study to provide a detailed description of the actual programs. The main focus of the study was a survey of participants' perceptions of the effect of professional development on their teaching and their students' learning. Survey results indicated that teachers perceived that professional development could be most effective for improving their teaching practice and student learning when the professional development programs are intentional, on going, and systemic. The non-traditional, multidimensional professional development was found to be more effective than the traditional model. However, the results of the study also indicated that even a traditional model of professional development was perceived as having an impact on students' learning when applications were made to curricular content and when there was support for further training. Based on these findings, a model or 'scaffold' towards effective professional development was conceptualized using constructs and characteristics that might influence teaching practice and student learning. Results are discussed in the light of the limitations of the study, implications for education, and suggestions for future research.

Data were collected from 41 elementary and secondary teachers in one south central Pennsylvania school district. The participants had experienced traditional professional development as well as been trained in the protocols and utilization of collaborative practices for professional learning communities. This qualitative research study utilized an online survey incorporating Likert-scale statements, open-ended response questions and six face-to-face interviews to ascertain: (1) the degree to which teachers perceive prior professional learning experiences as impactful on their instructional practices; (2) the characteristics of those professional learning experiences that have the most impact on teachers' instructional practices. The findings from this research study revealed that the effectiveness of professional learning experiences is as varied as the individual. Data revealed that participants were nearly equally divided on the effectiveness of professional learning experiences modifying their instructional practices. Response data supported that professional learning experiences which incorporate adult learning characteristics such as teachers' ability to choose the subject of the professional learning experience and the provision of adequate time to collaborate with colleagues were perceived to be more effective and produce the greatest impact on teachers' instructional practice.

While many leaders thought the transition from traditional to virtual instruction would be easy, it actually proved to be more difficult than first imagined. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how K-12 traditional teachers in Texas describe their professional development experience after moving from a traditional setting to a virtual environment and then back again, pre- and postpandemic. Three research questions guided this study: (a) How do K-12 traditional teachers in Texas describe their professional development experience after moving from a traditional setting to a virtual environment then back again, pre- and postpandemic? (b) What level of self-efficacy is perceived by K-12 traditional teachers in Texas after transiting from a traditional setting to a virtual, then back, pre- and postpandemic? (c) How useful was professional development for K-12 traditional teachers during transition from a traditional teaching setting to a virtual teaching setting, pre- and postpandemic? The participants were 20 teachers from different districts in Texas. Questionnaires and interviews were adopted as the instruments for the study. Data were collected through SurveyMonkey.com and either face-toface meetings or via telephone calls. Data were manually analyzed. The findings showed six themes. The themes were (a) andragogy, (b) adaptation, (c)communication quality, (d) selfefficacy, (e) value-added, and (f) ongoing support. Recommendations for school leaders and future research are included.
