Book excerpt: This study described teaching methods in use in business studies classes, explored the reasons for their use, and explored perceptions of effectiveness. Four main research methods were used: semistructured interviews; observation of teaching in one class and of presentations of business plans to the panel of experts in the other; perusal of course documents; and informal collection of information by talking to students and teachers. One class studied involved class teaching by the tutor and speakers; the self-study course used multimedia materials backed up by tutor telephone support. Three main dimensions of effectiveness for students were identified: learning about the feasibility of setting up one's own small business; learning about the world of small business; and gaining a sense of purpose in life. Data suggested six subsidiary factors that influenced teaching effectiveness: attendance/commitment; student isolation; tutor isolation; costs/fees; class composition; and evaluation and assessment. (Nine references and two course descriptions are appended.) (YLB)
