Book excerpt: There is an increasing societal awareness of the negative impact of bullying in the workplace, with some cases having dire outcomes for both individuals and organisations. Researchers of workplace bullying have highlighted the lack of effective grievance resolution systems in organisations. Some claim that appealing to the organisation 's grievance resolution system can, subsequently, be a further traumatising event for the target of bullying behaviour. The primary aim of this research is to gain a fresh understanding of why expectations of organisational grievance resolution systems are often not met in order to assist organisations to design and implement processes that meet the reasonable expectations of participants.

The authors identify the need for an effective complaint management strategy that prevents the loss of dissatisfied customers. Dissatisfied customers are at risk of migrating; accordingly, neglecting professional complaint management poses a considerable threat to customer relationships, sales and profits. The book offers a comprehensive management concept, which emphasizes direct contact with the complainant by employing complaint stimulation, acceptance, processing and reaction. Further, it discusses the relevant ‘backstage’ tasks involved in using complaint information to achieve quality improvements and cost reductions through complaint analysis, controlling and reporting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovator in contemporary thought on economic and political development looks here at decline rather than growth. Albert O. Hirschman makes a basic distinction between alternative ways of reacting to deterioration in business firms and, in general, to dissatisfaction with organizations: one, “exit,” is for the member to quit the organization or for the customer to switch to the competing product, and the other, “voice,” is for members or customers to agitate and exert influence for change “from within.” The efficiency of the competitive mechanism, with its total reliance on exit, is questioned for certain important situations. As exit often undercuts voice while being unable to counteract decline, loyalty is seen in the function of retarding exit and of permitting voice to play its proper role. The interplay of the three concepts turns out to illuminate a wide range of economic, social, and political phenomena. As the author states in the preface, “having found my own unifying way of looking at issues as diverse as competition and the two-party system, divorce and the American character, black power and the failure of ‘unhappy’ top officials to resign over Vietnam, I decided to let myself go a little.”

Book excerpt: This sequel to the authors' acclaimed Organizational America reconsiders the central theme of that volume-the unprecedented growth of the modern organization in America and the replacement of American founding values by the values of the modern organization. That book warned that as the modern organization becomes the dominant social and economic reality in American life, influencing everything that individuals do on and off the job, the consequences for the future would be severe. The authors saw an America forced into a path that unimpeded could result in totalitarianism.

Book excerpt: Have the speed, informality, and low cost of the grievance and arbitration system deteriorated? Has the system become too adversarial? Has it lost its problem-solving character? This book examines the nature and degree of change in workplace dispute resolution in the context of ongoing changes in work and in labor relations. The volume begins with an editors' introduction that provides context and offers a political perspective on the current state of dispute resolution in the workplace. The chapters that follow contain critiques of the existing legal framework surrounding mandatory arbitration in the nonunion sector and a review of the empirical literature on nonunion dispute resolution. Employment Dispute Resolution and Worker Rights in the Changing Workplace includes sections on grievance mediation, the status of the grievance procedure in workplaces with extensive worker and/or union participation in decision making, and high-performance workplaces. The study concludes with trends in dispute resolution in the public sector and with the alternative dispute resolution system commonly practiced in the unionized construction industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you have an employee whose performance keeps deteriorating—despite your close monitoring? Brace yourself: You may be at fault—by unknowingly triggering the set-up-to-fail syndrome. Perhaps things started off swimmingly. But then something--a missed deadline, a lost client—made you question the person's performance. You began micromanaging him. Suspecting your reduced confidence, he started doubting himself—and stopped giving his best. You viewed his new behavior as additional proof of mediocrity, and tightened the screws further. In The Set-Up-to-Fail Syndrome, Jean-Francois Manzoni and Jean-Louis Barsoux show how this insidious cycle hurts everyone: employees stop volunteering ideas, preventing your organization from getting the most from them; you lose energy to attend to other activities; and your reputation suffers as other employees deem you unfair. Team spirit wilts as targeted performers are alienated. But the set-up-to-fail syndrome doesn't have to happen. The authors provide preventive measures, such as loosening the reins as new employees master their jobs. If the syndrome has already erupted, Manzoni and Barsoux explain how to discuss the dynamic with your employee and reverse the cycle.

Book excerpt: This updated and exciting fourth edition of Managing People: A Practical Guide for Front-Line Managers addresses the growing needs of front-line managers who are not themselves specialists in personnel management but whose roles require them to have these skills. A growing trend over the last two decades has given these managers an increasing amount of responsibility of direct line management, which can be extremely challenging especially if the correct training is not given. This book examines how the different parts of managing people fit together, whilst acknowledging that different contexts require different approaches and recognizing ongoing organizational, environmental and legal changes that affect the employment framework. It recognizes the rapidly changing context in which modern front-line managers have to operate and acknowledges the increasing expectations of good leadership as a necessity. However, the book also emphasizes the need for front-line managers to understand themselves, their own management styles and attitudes, together with the importance of empathy in appreciating the perspectives of the staff that work under them. Managing People: A Practical Guide for Front-Line Managers is designed for both new managers and for NVQ/SVQ Level 4 students. It is also appropriate for the first stages of Foundation Degrees and for HND courses combining academic study with workplace learning.
