Book excerpt: The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG), a church of Brazilian origin, has been enormously successful in establishing branches and attracting followers in post-apartheid South Africa. Unlike other Pentecostal Charismatic Churches (PCC), the UCKG insists that relationships with God be devoid of 'emotions', that socialisation between members be kept to a minimum and that charity and fellowship are 'useless' in materialising God's blessings. Instead, the UCKG urges members to sacrifice large sums of money to God for delivering wealth, health, social harmony and happiness. While outsiders condemn these rituals as empty or manipulative, this book shows that they are locally meaningful, demand sincerity to work, have limits and are informed by local ideas about human bodies, agency and ontological balance. As an ethnography of people rather than of institutions, this book offers fresh insights into the mass PCC movement that has swept across Africa since the early 1990s.

Additionally, it aims to assess how these leaders impact the political involvement of their congregants, explore the relationship between Pentecostalism and various political ideologies, identify the challenges faced by Pentecostal leaders when engaging in politics, and offer recommendations to enhance their role in promoting responsible political participation. To address these objectives, a mixed-methods approach was employed. A survey of 75 residents of Mbale City provided quantitative data on political behaviors and perceptions related to Pentecostal leaders. Complementing this, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Pentecostal bishops and overseers to gain deeper insights into their beliefs and practices. The data collected from both sources were analyzed to draw meaningful conclusions. The study's findings underscore the substantial link between Pentecostal Christian leaders and political participation in Mbale City. It reveals how these leaders effectively mobilize their congregants, instill a sense of civic responsibility, and influence their political attitudes. Furthermore, the research uncovers potential challenges and opportunities arising from the intersection of religion and politics in the city. In conclusion, this research sheds light on the intricate relationship between religion and politics, particularly within the context of Pentecostalism in Uganda. It affirms the significant influence of Pentecostal Christian leaders on political engagement in Mbale City, advocating for informed and inclusive approaches to democratic governance and community development. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge the study's limitations and recommend further research and strategies to foster responsible political behavior in a religiously diverse society.
