Book excerpt: Over the past forty years, Canada has become an increasingly secular, multicultural, and religiously plural society. Indeed, the church in Canada, and Pentecostals in particular, face a challenging context for responding to the call to bear witness to Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Like the disciples on the day of Pentecost, however, we need the Holy Spirit to come upon us and liberate us from our post-Christian pessimism. We need the Holy Spirit to enable us to proclaim the gospel to the nations, people that are no longer at the ends of the earth, but making their home in Canada. This book engages this new context, and considers and proposes ways that pentecostal Christians and churches can respond to the challenges of the increasingly post-Christian, multicultural, secular, and religiously plural context of Canadian society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fifteen sermons by one of the leading pentecostal theologians today provides insight into the form, style, and content of preaching in the pentecostal tradition while also being suggestive of normative homiletical theory and practice. The Kergymatic Spirit argues that Spirit-empowered preaching is apostolic not only with regard to being rooted in the scriptural traditions but also with regard to connecting the that of the early Christian message with the this of contemporary experience and discipleship. Hence, rather than only reflecting pentecostal preaching of the sort that happens in the pulpits of churches connected to the modern movement by that name, these sermons are presented as the participating in the form of gospel proclamation inspired and empowered by the divine Spirit poured out on all flesh on the Day of Pentecost by the risen Christ from the right hand of the Father. Whether read or heard (there are links to video and audio archives throughout), these homilies are illustrative of exegetical and expositional practice that connects the biblical text with Spirit-filled faithfulness in the twenty-first-century ecumenical church and world at large.

Book excerpt: "I want to go on living after my death, so that the message that God has given me to preach will continue to bless and help future generations of LGBT youth in their struggle for identity." -- Sister Paula Nielsen This is why Sister Paula, an open transgender Christian, spent seven years writing her autobiography "The Trans Evangelist," a document that scans seven decades. Her story is a unique journey that the reader will find fascinating, entertaining, and spiritually uplifting. Paula says: "So many people are living dull and uneventful lives because they are being what society expects them to be, rather than being the person they really are." Paula has had the courage to step out and be herself, swimming against the current of popular opinion of her time. Her life is checkered with controversy. Yet, through it all, God's hand remained on her life. In this book she leaves a legacy that people will not soon forget. ..".God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise.....and things which are despised, hath God chosen...." (I Corinthians 1:27, 28) This truth becomes crystal clear as Paula's incredible story unfolds throughout this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of the movement until now Pentecostalism has relied heavily upon its preachers-preachers both old and young, male and female, ordained and lay, educated and uneducated. Although preaching has been an important aspect of Pentecostal life and practice, few works have been written on Pentecostal preaching, and fewer still have been written from an academic standpoint. This volume, though not claiming to be comprehensive, begins to meet the need for scholarly reflection upon this important topic. In this multi-authored work, leading Pentecostal theologians come together to construct a contemporary model for the theology and practice of Pentecostal preaching. The writers take into account Pentecostalism's history, theology, ethos, diversity, and global expressions as they offer a distinctive theological vision for Pentecostal preaching. Chapters include the following: A Pentecostal Theology of the Call to Preach - Frank Macchia; Pentecostal Prophetic Preaching - Lee Roy Martin; The Ecclesial Dimension of Preaching - William Kay; The Spirit, Preaching, and the Approach of Jonathan Edwards - John Gordy; A New Testament Apologetic for Women Preachers - John Christopher Thomas; A Theological Apologetic for Women Preachers - Lisa Stephenson; African-American Women Preachers - Antoinette Alvarado; Latino Theology of Pentecostal Preaching - Angel Santiago-Vendrell; Transfiguring Preaching: Proclamation and Theosis - Chris E. W. Green; From Proclamation to Incarnation: Preaching, Worship, and Christoformation - Daniela C. Augustine; Bishop J.H. King and the Theology and Practice of Pentecostal Preaching - Tony Moon; Technology and Preaching - Leah Payne; A Critique of Emerging Homiletics - Rick Wadholm; and Pentecostal Homiletic: A Convergence of History, Theology, and Worship - Joseph Byrd. Written for pastors, students, and scholars, this work provides ample resources for anyone who wishes to examine the theology of Pentecostal preaching.

Forbes, Jr.--widely hailed as one of the nation's foremost preachers--offers four dynamic lectures originally delivered as the Lyman Beecher Lectures at Yale University, the most prestigious annual preaching event in the United States. In each of the lectures, Forbes focuses on the Holy Spirit as it relates to preaching. He traces the Holy Spirit's activity in Jesus' ministry and looks at the impact of being anointed by the Holy Spirit. Forbes demonstrates how the Holy Spirit works with the pastor in the preparation and delivery of a sermon. The Holy Spirit and Preaching concludes by focusing on the need for anointed preaching, and the way anointed preaching happens today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prosperity movement has influenced millions of people in North America, Asia, Europe, South America, and Africa through Pentecostal, Charismatic and nondenominational preachers in some of the largest churches in the world. CNN, ABC, and Time magazine have examined the preachers and churches in this popular and controversial movement. Scholars and church leaders have studied it for more than two decades, producing dozens of books and articles on it. Considering the widespread popularity of the prosperity movement and the attention it is given by its critics, Brogdon asks, "Is prosperity preaching the new Pentecostal message?" In order to answer this question, one has to examine the prosperity movement as a Pentecostal movement instead of a Word of Faith movement that is a revised form of New Thought metaphysics and Science of Mind. Brogdon provides an introduction to the prosperity movement as a Pentecostal movement. He asks important questions in the study of the prosperity movement, such as who popularized prosperity teaching, Oral Roberts or Ken Hagin? Do all Pentecostals agree with the prosperity doctrine? Is prosperity teaching good news to the poor? Has prosperity replaced the emphasis on the Holy Spirit? The answers may surprise you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Trinitarian Exposition of the New Testament This series is designed with the serious Trinitarian Pentecostal student in mind. With a foundational commitment to the inspiration and infallibility of Scripture, each passage is explained in terms of its theological and practical significance. In addition: • The distinctive Pentecostal pneumatology is sustained • Key doctrines are identified and expounded • Important cross references within Scripture are noted • Historical connections in Church history are mentioned • Erroneous teachings are scrutinized • Comments are based on the King James Version • The KJV text is printed in the body of the commentary With a modern style of readability, this commentary series is appropriate for anyone seeking to grow and understand the truths of Scripture and is especially helpful to pastors as well as college and seminary students. Author’s Foreward As a Pentecostal student attending a Pentecostal Bible college, I went to the college bookstore to purchase my textbooks without knowing that the commentaries on my book list were written by non-Pentecostals. Even though my classes required commentaries from various publishers, none of the publishers were Pentecostal. I often wondered why a Pentecostal Bible school would use non-Pentecostal commentaries for class. What I did not know at the time was that there really was no such thing as a Pentecostal commentary written for and by Pentecostals. Since then, there have been a few Pentecostals who have written on individual books, but there are significant portions of even the New Testament that have had little or no Pentecostal voice. As a result, serious Pentecostal students have no other choice but to learn at the feet of non-Pentecostals. I am not opposed to non-Pentecostal commentaries. Indeed, I have gained considerable insights from reading such, but there are two points of theology that I must consciously filter out every time I read them. The most important concern to a Pentecostal is that the pneumatology (the study of the Holy Spirit) presented by non-Pentecostals is very different than that of a Pentecostal. The second point is the emphasis on Calvinistic doctrines especially eternal security with which most Pentecostals do not agree. In addition, there are other theological differences and substantially different hermeneutical principals that can dramatically alter the interpretation of texts in non-Pentecostal ways. In my studies, I have always desired to have a commentary that was thoroughly Pentecostal, but I never imagined that I would write one. From one Pentecostal to another, I hope you will find this series to be a breath of fresh Spirit anointed air. Series Preface While it is hoped that Bible students from other theological traditions will study and benefit from its contents, it is first and foremost Pentecostal. As such, this commentary does not include surveys of other viewpoints unless such inclusion is necessary for clarity of argument. In addition, with all due respect to our Charismatic brethren, it may be said that this series is not meant to be inclusive of Charismatic interpretations related to pneumatology. The Pentecostal Commentary series intentionally excludes views of Scripture that do not hold to its inspiration, inerrancy, and infallibility, and also excludes modern liberal arguments of authorship, date, purpose, and so on. Traditional viewpoints on these subjects will be discussed without confusing the issue. In addition, 19th century criticism methods and concerns over source documents will not often be discussed. In other words, this series assumes that the Biblical text is as God wants it to be and that it was written by the person and at the time traditionally ascribed.

Book excerpt: Studies of preaching and preaching style have up to this point focused almost exclusively on a western eurocentric understanding of good preaching. Preach It encourages students, both vocational and scholarly, to look beyond these approaches and to learn from traditions with which they are less familiar. The distinctive style and techniques that African Caribbean Pentecostal preachers have inherited has been shaped by historical, political and socio-economic factors impacting on black Caribbean people (including clergy). Using a variety of socio-linguistic and theological approaches, Preach It reflects on these techniques, and outlines how preachers across church traditions might learn from them and use them in their own contexts.

Astute preacher Leonora Tisdale considers these vexing questions while providing guidance and encouragement to pastors who want to recommit themselves to the task of prophetic witness. With a keen sensitivity to pastoral contexts, Tisdale's work is full of helpful suggestions and examples to help pastors structure and preach prophetic sermons, considered by many to be one of the most difficult tasks pastors are called to undertake.
