Book Synopsis Sorry for Your Troubles by : Pádraig Ó Tuama
Download or read book Sorry for Your Troubles written by Pádraig Ó Tuama and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most engaging voices contemporary spirituality in is that of the Irish poet, Pádraig O'Tuama. This second poetry collection arises out of a decade of his hearing stories of people who have lived through personal and political conflict in Northern Ireland, the Middle East and other places of conflict. These poems tell stories of individuals who have lived through conflict: their loves and losses, their hope and generosity. One poem, 'Shaking hands' was written when Pádraig witnessed the historic handshake between Queen Elizabeth II and Martin McGuinness, who has since used the poem publicly. The phrase 'Sorry for your troubles' is used all over Ireland. It comes directly from an Irish phrase, yet Irish has no word for 'bereavement' - the word used is 'troiblóid'. So the phrase would be better translated 'Sorry for your bereavements'. With this in mind, this new book speaks evocatively about a time when thousands of people lost their lives and many thousands more lived through the searing pain of grief.

Book excerpt: In this dazzling reconsideration of the language of the Old and New Testaments, acclaimed scholar and translator of classical literature Sarah Ruden argues that the Bible’s modern translations often lack the clarity and vitality of the originals. Singling out the most famous passages, such as the Genesis creation story, the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Beatitudes, Ruden reexamines and retranslates from the Hebrew and Greek, illuminating what has been misunderstood and obscured in standard English translations. By showing how the original texts more clearly reveal our cherished values, Ruden gives us an unprecedented understanding of what this extraordinary document was for its earliest readers and what it can still be for us today.

Book Synopsis Spiritual Gifts, the Beloved Community, and Covenant by : Emily Provance
Download or read book Spiritual Gifts, the Beloved Community, and Covenant written by Emily Provance and published by . This book was released on 2020-02 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God speaks to all people and gives us all spiritual gifts-and yet these gifts are not all the same. We are organizers, pray-ers, workers, carers, innovators, provocateurs, and healers. Why? Because we're made to fit together like puzzle pieces, as we name, affirm, and nurture spiritual gifts and ministries. In the author's view, this fitting together is at the heart of what it means to be a covenant people, a people given to the care of one another and charged with building the kingdom of God on Earth. It's easy to settle for less than covenant; it's scary to stretch for the wholeness of God's promise. We, collectively, face a choice of who to be. A version of this pamphlet was given as the 2019 Weed Lecture at Beacon Hill Friends House in Boston. Discussion questions included.

Download or read book John Yungblut written by Charles C. Finn and published by . This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie Finn unveils the faith and vision of John Yungblut. At the heart of this story, readers will discover a spiritual "genealogy," - Rufus Jones, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and Carl Jung influenced John Yungblut, who in turn became a spiritual guide and friend to Charlie Finn. For John Yungblut, mysticism was the "heart and core of all true religion." Yungblut's gospel of evolutionary Christianity, underscoring the call for contemplatives in action, first caught Finn's attention as he read, by chance one evening, Yungblut's contributions to the book Speaking of Silence, a dialogue about contemplative life. Finn's joy and enthusiasm for his subject permeates this biography. Discussion questions included.
