Others have bladder issues such as an overactive bladder or recurrent urinary tract infections without having had children at all. Following the success of book 1 in the series, Pelvic Floor Recovery: Physiotherapy for Gynaecological Surgery, I have written this second book to assist women in learning how to correct any bladder and pelvic floor problems using conservative measures whether having had children or not. This book includes information such as:Correct activation of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles.Pelvic floor muscle training programme.Good bladder and bowel habits and effective toilet positioning.Treatment for urinary incontinence.Conservative prolapse management strategies.`Pelvic Floor safe¿ abdominal exercises.Relaxation, breath awareness and chronic pain education.Sport, sexual function and travel advice. The book is easy to read and has simple, clear diagrams and illustrations to demonstrate the anatomy and exercises. It is small enough to sit on your bedside table for regular review and to help your pelvic floor stay in good shape forever.

Divided into seven thematic sections, the coverage is wide-ranging and encompasses common barriers to return to sport, return to sport decision-based models, and the complete spectrum of optimal treatment for ACL injuries, including preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation. Advanced training concepts are explained in detail, with description of sports-specific programs for soccer, basketball, and tennis. Readers will find detailed guidance on objective testing for muscle strength, neuromuscular function, neurocognitive function, and cardiovascular fitness, as well as validated assessments to identify and manage psychological issues. In addition, return to sport considerations after meniscus surgery, patellofemoral realignment, articular cartilage procedures, and knee arthroplasty are discussed. Generously illustrated and heavily referenced, Return to Sport after ACL Reconstruction and Other Knee Operations is a comprehensive resource for all medical professionals and support staff working with athletes and active patients looking to get back in the game with confidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a Pageburst digital textbook; the product description may vary from the print textbook. This text provides the physical therapist with the information they need to know about specific orthopedic surgeries and the rehabilitation techniques. Each chapter presents the indications and considerations for surgery; a detailed look at the surgical procedure, including the surgeon's perspective regarding rehabilitation concerns; and therapy guidelines to use in designing the rehabilitation program. In addition to including descriptions of each surgery, this book provides rehabilitation protocols for each surgery along with ways to trouble shoot within various patient populations (i.e. geriatric, athletic, pediatric, etc.). Unlike the more general orthopedic books, this book provides specific clinical information about individual orthopedic surgeries along with a chapter on soft tissue healing. Each chapter is written by an MD and PT or OT providing both surgical and rehabilitation information. Includes the latest, evidence-based therapy guidelines to help therapists design the most effective rehab programs for their patients. Every chapter includes case study vignettes with critical thinking questions to encourage students to use clinical reasoning. Provides detailed tables that break down therapy guidelines with rehab phases to give a quick resource to rehabilitation and therapy plans. Includes the indications and considerations of specific surgical procedures to demonstrate why surgery should or should not be considered. Describes surgeries in detail to give therapists a clear understanding of the surgical procedures used for various injuries and disorders so they can fashion the appropriate rehabilitation program. Includes coverage of commonly accepted therapy guidelines to allow therapists to design a home therapy program as well as what's needed immediately post surgery. Suggested Home Maintenance boxes, included in every chapter, provide guidance for the patient once they return home. Emphasizes the unique needs of the individual patient with suggested home maintenance guidelines and the entire treatment plan broken out by phase for every chapter. Over 300 photos and line drawings provide invaluable teaching tools for instructors and references to the practitioners. Content provided by well-known contributors from around the country. Four new chapters: Pathogenesis of Soft Tissue and Bone Repair, Total Shoulder Replacement, Surgery and Rehabilitation for Primary Flexor Tendon Repair in the Digit, and Cervical Spine Fusion. Includes new information within the appendices on transitioning the running and jumping athlete (e.g. basketball player) back to court and the mini invasive anterior approach to total hip replacement. New authors and editors bring fresh perspective to the topics covered in the text. Each chapter is thoroughly revised with the most current information available on orthopedic surgeries and therapy. Evaluations and guidelines are designed more specifically to the surgical diagnoses for the postsurgical patient. Companion CD-ROM includes the suggested home maintenance boxes in a printable and editable form as well as anatomical and surgical animations on important procedures and anatomical areas.

Book excerpt: In Heart With Joy, fifteen year old Julian Hale's life is turned upside down when his mother suddenly moves from North Carolina to Venice, Florida under the pretense of running her parents' 9-room motel and finishing the novel she has been working on for years. While Julian has always been closer to his mother and wants to go with her, she tells him he has to stay with his father until the end of the school year. Three weeks after his mother leaves, Julian's father decides to run a marathon. This surprises Julian because he has never seen his father exercise, but once he agrees to help him train the two develop the sort of close relationship they've never had before. Also, with the help of an elderly neighbor, Julian learns that the most important thing in life is to follow your heart. And Julian's heart leads him to a passion for cooking and a young cashier at the local grocery store. By the end of the novel, Julian is forced to choose between staying with his father and going to live with his mother. Ultimately, Heart With Joy, is a literary coming of age novel that explores how sometimes the things you need most in life have been there, right beside you, all along.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a clear, analytic, and innovative interpretation of Heidegger’s late work. This period of Heidegger’s philosophy remains largely unexplored by analytic philosophers, who consider it filled with inconsistencies and paradoxical ideas, particularly concerning the notions of Being and nothingness. This book takes seriously the claim that the late Heidegger endorses dialetheism – namely the position according to which some contradictions are true – and shows that the idea that Being is both an entity and not an entity is neither incoherent nor logically trivial. The author achieves this by presenting and defending the idea that reality has an inconsistent structure. In doing so, he takes one of the most discussed topics in current analytic metaphysics, grounding theory, into a completely unexplored area. Additionally, in order to make sense of Heidegger’s concept of nothingness, the author introduces an original axiomatic mereological system that, having a paraconsistent logic as a base logic, can tolerate inconsistencies without falling into logical triviality. This is the first book to set forth a complete and detailed discussion of the late Heidegger in the framework of analytic metaphysics. It will be of interest to Heidegger scholars and analytic philosophers working on theories of grounding, mereology, dialetheism, and paraconsistent logic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are conscious of only a small fraction of our lives. Because the brain constantly receives an enormous quantity of information, we need to be able to do things without thinking about them—to act in “autopilot” mode. Automatic behaviors—the vast majority of our activities—occur without our conscious awareness, or subconsciously. Yet the physiological basis of subconsciousness remains poorly understood, despite its vast importance for physical and mental health. The neurodegenerative disease expert Yves Agid offers a groundbreaking and accessible account of subconsciousness and its significance. He pinpoints the basal ganglia—the ancient “basement of the brain”—as the main physiological hub of the subconscious. Agid examines its roles in the control and production of automatic behavior, including motor, intellectual, and emotional processes. He highlights the consequences for various brain pathologies, showing how malfunctions of the subconscious have clinical repercussions including not only abnormal involuntary movements, as seen in Parkinson’s disease, but also psychiatric disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorders and depression. Based on this understanding, Agid considers how seeing the basal ganglia as a therapeutic target can aid development of potential new treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Shedding new light on the physiological bases of our behavior and mental states, this book provides an innovative exploration of the complexities of the mind, with implications ranging from clinical applications to philosophy’s thorniest problems.
