Book excerpt: A story of the grassroots economic work to support peace and reconciliation in Ireland. Peace Meets the Streets chronicles the highlights of the work of author Jim Lyons in Ireland and Northern Ireland from 1993 to 2001. During this critical period in Irish history, he first served as President Clinton’s US Observer to the International Fund for Ireland. Lyons was later appointed by the President to a second role as Special Advisor to the President and Secretary of State for Economic Initiatives in Northern Ireland and the border counties of the Republic of Ireland. From his unique role and personal experiences, Lyons explains his work in the gritty, sectarian neighborhoods of Belfast and Derry and in the rural towns and villages of the twelve counties. Peace Meets the Streets revolves around the people and leaders in those neighborhoods, cities, and towns—both Catholic and Protestant. He tells of the painstaking effort to build trust in both communities and the key players with whom he worked, trusted, and came to befriend. President and First Lady Hillary Clinton are central characters in Lyons’ narrative as well as leading business and public figures; high public officials from London, Washington, and Dublin; community organizers and local politicians; Nobel Peace laureates; a convicted murderer; and the grieving mother of a lost child. Peace Meets the Streets provides insight into this key period of Irish history and offers an insider’s look at the successful efforts of the Clinton administration to help restore this troubled democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the centre of China’s historic capital, Long Peace Street cuts a long, arrow-straight line. It divides the Forbidden City, home to generations of Chinese emperors, from Tiananmen Square, the vast granite square constructed to glorify a New China under Communist rule. To walk the street is to travel through the story of China’s recent past, wandering among its physical relics and hearing echoes of its dramas. Long Peace Street recounts a journey in modern China, a walk of twenty miles across Beijing offering a very personal encounter with the life of the capital’s streets. At the same time, it takes the reader on a journey through the city’s recent history, telling the story of how the present and future of the world’s rising superpower has been shaped by its tumultuous past, from the demise of the last imperial dynasty in 1912 through to the present day.

Book Synopsis Children of Peace by : John McIntyre
Download or read book Children of Peace written by John McIntyre and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994-07-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Children of Peace, which existed from 1812 to 1890, was started by former Quakers from the United States who set up a utopian community near Toronto. With their propensity for fine architecture, music, and ritual, adherents to the sect attracted the attention of the religious, political, and social élites. Their leader and founder, David Willson, was one of the most prolific religious writers and theorists in Canada at the time. The Children of Peace sought to create a church where God spoke directly to all and where both Christians and Jews could find a home. McIntyre looks at life in the community and places the sect within its broader historical contexts. His examination of the community's buildings and artefacts provides insight into the beliefs and behaviour of its adherents. Children of Peace makes an important contribution to the growing field of religious and cultural history in Canada.

Download or read book Bleeding Out written by Thomas Abt and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Harvard scholar and former Obama official, a powerful proposal for curtailing violent crime in America Urban violence is one of the most divisive and allegedly intractable issues of our time. But as Harvard scholar Thomas Abt shows in Bleeding Out, we actually possess all the tools necessary to stem violence in our cities. Coupling the latest social science with firsthand experience as a crime-fighter, Abt proposes a relentless focus on violence itself -- not drugs, gangs, or guns. Because violence is "sticky," clustering among small groups of people and places, it can be predicted and prevented using a series of smart-on-crime strategies that do not require new laws or big budgets. Bringing these strategies together, Abt offers a concrete, cost-effective plan to reduce homicides by over 50 percent in eight years, saving more than 12,000 lives nationally. Violence acts as a linchpin for urban poverty, so curbing such crime can unlock the untapped potential of our cities' most disadvantaged communities and help us to bridge the nation's larger economic and social divides. Urgent yet hopeful, Bleeding Out offers practical solutions to the national emergency of urban violence -- and challenges readers to demand action.

Book Synopsis The American Peace Movement and Social Reform, 1889-1918 by : C. Roland Marchand
Download or read book The American Peace Movement and Social Reform, 1889-1918 written by C. Roland Marchand and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the peace movement in the United States was one of dramatic change: in the mid-IKWs it consisted of a few provincial societies; by 1912 it had become eminently respectable and listed among its members an impressive number of the nation's leaders; by 1918 it was once again weak and remote from those who formulated national policy. Along with these fluctuations went equally substantial changes of leadership and purpose that, as C. Roland Marchand emphasizes, reflected the motives of the various reform groups that successively joined and dominated the movement. Most of those who joined were not devoted solely to the cause of world peace, but saw in the programs of the movement a chance for the fulfillment of their own mare immediately relevant goals. Consequently the story of the peace movement reflects the concerns of such groups as the international lawyers who wanted a world court of arbitration as an alternative to war, the business leaders who believed that international economic stability would be endangered by war, and the labor unions who felt that the working class suffered most in war.
