Book Synopsis Hitchhikers' Guide to Electronics in the '90s by : David Manners
Download or read book Hitchhikers' Guide to Electronics in the '90s written by David Manners and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitchhikers Guide to Electronics in the '90s covers the advances in electronics in a historical context, the microchip technology, which is at the heart of all technological advances, and the major industrial electronics power houses. The book tackles what's most interesting about electronics, such as the democratizing effects of technology, profits in electronics, and the importance of electronics, and then defines terminologies related to the componentry of the electronics industry. The text discusses the beneficiaries of electronics and the sectors of the electronics industry (i.e. computers, consumers, telecommunications, industrial, transportation, and military). The issues in chip technology including the importance of chips; vast cost of chip research and development and production; effect of erratic chip supplies on equipment companies; East/West imbalance in chip production; and the American and Japanese approaches to chip-making are also considered. The book concludes by describing the trends in electronics for the '90s, including the innovation, development, and rock-bottom cost of the technology. Students of electronics engineering and practicing electronics engineers will find this book useful.
Book Synopsis Microwave and Radio-Frequency Technologies in Agriculture by : Mohan V. Jacob
Download or read book Microwave and Radio-Frequency Technologies in Agriculture written by Mohan V. Jacob and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity's ability to produce enough food is mostly due to adoption of new methods and technologies by the agricultural industries as they became available. New information, communication and high speed processing and precision agriculture technologies have the potential to transform the agricultural industry. These technologies incorporate radio-frequency and microwave radiation into their systems. This book presents an overview of how these technologies are being used in agricultural systems. The main purpose of the book is to provide a glimpse of what is possible and encourage practitioners in the engineering and agricultural industries to explore how radio-frequency and microwave systems might further enhance the agricultural industry. The authors have extensive experience in agricultural and microwave engineering, instrumentation and communication systems.

Book Synopsis Smarter Than You Think by : Clive Thompson
Download or read book Smarter Than You Think written by Clive Thompson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory and timely look at how technology boosts our cognitive abilities—making us smarter, more productive, and more creative than ever It’s undeniable—technology is changing the way we think. But is it for the better? Amid a chorus of doomsayers, Clive Thompson delivers a resounding “yes.” In Smarter Than You Think, Thompson shows that every technological innovation—from the written word to the printing press to the telegraph—has provoked the very same anxieties that plague us today. We panic that life will never be the same, that our attentions are eroding, that culture is being trivialized. But, as in the past, we adapt—learning to use the new and retaining what is good of the old. Smarter Than You Think embraces and extols this transformation, presenting an exciting vision of the present and the future.
Book Synopsis Instruments of Empire by : Mary Talusan
Download or read book Instruments of Empire written by Mary Talusan and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, the United States extended its empire into the Philippines while subjugating Black Americans in the Jim Crow South. And yet, one of the most popular musical acts was a band of “little brown men,” Filipino musicians led by an African American conductor playing European and American music. The Philippine Constabulary Band and Lt. Walter H. Loving entertained thousands in concert halls and world’s fairs, held a place of honor in William Howard Taft’s presidential parade, and garnered praise by bandmaster John Philip Sousa—all the while facing beliefs and policies that Filipinos and African Americans were “uncivilized.” Author Mary Talusan draws on hundreds of newspaper accounts and exclusive interviews with band members and their descendants to compose the story from the band’s own voices. She sounds out the meanings of Americans’ responses to the band and identifies a desire to mitigate racial and cultural anxieties during an era of overseas expansion and increasing immigration of nonwhites, and the growing “threat” of ragtime with its roots in Black culture. The spectacle of the band, its performance and promotion, emphasized a racial stereotype of Filipinos as “natural musicians” and the beneficiaries of benevolent assimilation and colonial tutelage. Unable to fit Loving’s leadership of the band into this narrative, newspapers dodged and erased his identity as a Black American officer. The untold story of the Philippine Constabulary Band offers a unique opportunity to examine the limits and porousness of America’s racial ideologies, exploring musical pleasure at the intersection of Euro-American cultural hegemony, racialization, and US colonization of the Philippines.
