Book excerpt: A bold new study of politics and power in 17th-century France, this book argues that the French Crown extended its control over the provinces and laid the foundations for a centralized state by removing patronage power from the provincial governors and putting it instead in the hands of newly-created provincial power brokers--regional notables who cooperated with the Paris ministers in exchange for their patronage.

Book excerpt: This doctoral dissertation provides the first in-depth assessment of Medici Grand Duchess Vittoria della Rovere (1622-1694). My study, largely grounded in heretofore unexamined archival sources, investigates the art patronage of Vittoria della Rovere and reconsiders the 17th-century Florentine court culture that informed this patronage. The Grand Duchess emerges as a ruler who shrewdly manipulated courtly decorum and protocol in order to fulfill her own personal and political ends. In her patronage of state and "allegorical" portraiture (most intriguingly in the guise of religious personages), devotional paintings (especially by Carlo Dolci), and her remarkably active patronage of talented women (in music, literature, and the visual arts), Vittoria della Rovere materializes as a dynamic and important early modern patron. Period documents also testify to the Grand Duchess's pivotal role in the complex patronage networks between European courts in this period. Vittoria della Rovere's exchange of works of art and other property--as well as the sharing of musicians and singers with both local and foreign noblewomen--is particularly noteworthy in re-evaluating her historical contribution. By situating Vittoria della Rovere's collecting habits within the framework of the early modern court, I demonstrate that the social, political, and artistic culture of 17th-century Florence cannot be fully understood without the contributions of this Medici Grand Duchess.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In looking at the history of collecting, one may be excused for regarding it as an activity in which, traditionally, women have shown little interest or in which they have not been involved. As the present volume shows, women—particularly aristocratic women—not only resisted this discrimination through the ages, but also built important collections and used them to their own advantage, in order to make statements about their lineage, power, cultural heritage or religious preferences. That is not to say that there was not an increasing number of middle-class women who became draughtswomen, painters and natural scientists and who found it equally beneficial for their chosen profession to collect. In every case, the female collector chose to collect and what to collect; she chose how and where to present the collection and she also decided when to dispose of objects, thereby occasionally taking on a curatorial role. Women have been seen as gatherers of furnishings, jewellery, dress and objects of domestic life. This third volume in the Collecting & Display series of conference proceedings challenges such perceptions through the detailed analysis of different types of collecting by women from the early modern period onwards; it thus seeks to give a voice to a group of important female collectors from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century whose importance for the history of collecting has not yet, or not sufficiently, been acknowledged.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive book brings to light the portraits, private collections and public patronage of the princesse de Lamballe, a pivotal member of Marie-Antoinette’s inner circle. Drawing extensively on unpublished archival sources, Sarah Grant examines the princess’s many portrait commissions and the rich character of her private collections, which included works by some of the period’s leading artists and artisans. The book sheds new light on the agency, sorority and taste of Marie-Antoinette and her friends, a group of female patrons and model of courtly collecting that would be extinguished by the coming revolution.

Book excerpt: "As Prince of Orange, Count of Nassau, and Stadhouder of the United Provinces, Frederik Hendrik (1584-1647) was the most visible, and powerful, nobleman during the heyday of the Dutch Republic in the early 17th century. In the history of Dutch collecting, as well, Frederik Hendrik's activities as a patron of art and architecture between 1612 and 1647 remain conspicuously unusual in style, function, and wide-ranging extent. Despite this prominence, Frederik Hendrik's patronage has received only sporadic attention from specialized historians since 1928. In this study, based on new archival research, the visual environment of Frederik Hendrik's first and favorite home, the huis Honselaarsdijk, is examined. A country retreat outside of The Hague, Honselaarsdijk provided Frederik Hendrik with a place to fully express his noble status and aristocratic heritage, outside the confines of his administrative position as Stadhouder. Constructed and improved continuously over the course of Frederik Hendrik's adult life, Honselaarsdijk introduced sophisticated international models for the visual arts, for aristocratic lifestyles, and for elite domestic settings into the predominantly republican Netherlands of the 17th century. By examining the evidence for the entire built environment of the palace (destroyed in 1815), including painting, sculpture, architecture, landscape and garden design, and decorative arts, a clearer picture of the thematic and decorative unity of the home is achieved. The use of such overt noble signifiers at this country retreat by the Prince and Stadhouder carried a significant social and political charge for its original audience. Rather than view Frederik Hendrik's patronage activities as an aristocratic aberration during the Dutch Republic, this study examines the evidence anew to construct a more accurate picture of the creation, operation, and effect of the Honselaarsdijk palace. Frederik Hendrik's lavish domestic environment emerges as not only artistically and conceptually innovative, but as an effective exemplar of noble life, a powerful argument for the Prince's political status, and a lasting influence on the artistic preferences and lifestyles of the Dutch regent class of the seventeenth century."--
