Book Synopsis Coptic Christianity in Ottoman Egypt by : Febe Armanios
Download or read book Coptic Christianity in Ottoman Egypt written by Febe Armanios and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Febe Armanios explores Coptic religious life in Ottoman Egypt (1517-1798), focusing closely on manuscripts housed in Coptic archives. Ottoman Copts frequently turned to religious discourses, practices, and rituals as they dealt with various transformations in the first centuries of Ottoman rule. These included the establishment of a new political regime, changes within communal leadership structures (favoring lay leaders over clergy), the economic ascent of the archons (lay elites), and developments in the Copts' relationship with other religious communities, particularly with Catholics. Coptic Christianity in Ottoman Egypt highlights how Copts, as a minority living in a dominant Islamic culture, identified and distinguished themselves from other groups by turning to an impressive array of religious traditions, such as the visitation of saints' shrines, the relocation of major festivals to remote destinations, the development of new pilgrimage practices, as well as the writing of sermons that articulated a Coptic religious ethos in reaction to Catholic missionary discourses. Within this discussion of religious life, the Copts' relationship to local political rulers, military elites, the Muslim religious establishment, and to other non-Muslim communities are also elucidated. In all, the book aims to document the Coptic experience within the Ottoman Egyptian context while focusing on new documentary sources and on an historical era that has been long neglected.
Book Synopsis Refiguring Revolutions by : Kevin Sharpe
Download or read book Refiguring Revolutions written by Kevin Sharpe and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refiguring Revolutions presents an original and interdisciplinary reassessment of the cultural and political history of England from 1649 to 1789. Bypassing conventional chronologies and traditional notions of disciplinary divides, editors Kevin Sharpe and Steven Zwicker frame a set of new agendas for, and suggest new approaches to, the study of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England. Customary periodization by dynasty and century obscures the aesthetic and cultural histories that were enacted between and even by the English Civil Wars and the French Revolution. The authors of the essays in this volume set about returning aesthetics to the center of the master narrative of politics. They focus on topics and moments that illuminate the connection between aesthetic issues of a private or public nature and political culture. Politics between the Puritan Revolution and the Romantic Revolution, these authors argue, was a set of social and aesthetic practices, a narrative of presentations, exchanges, and performances as much as it was a story of monarchies and ministries. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1998.

Book Synopsis Sir Robert Filmer (1588–1653) and the patriotic monarch by : Cesare Cuttica
Download or read book Sir Robert Filmer (1588–1653) and the patriotic monarch written by Cesare Cuttica and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, now available in paperback, studies the patriarchalist theories of Sir Robert Filmer (1588–1653) in the context of early modern English and European political cultures. Making use of unexplored primary material and adopting an innovative contextual approach, Cuttica provides a long-overdue account of an often referred-to but largely misunderstood thinker. By focusing on Filmer’s most important writing, Patriarcha (written in the 1620s–30s but published in 1680), this monograph rethinks some crucial issues in the reading of political history in the seventeenth century. Most importantly, it invites new reflections on the theory of patriarchalism and gives novel insights into the place of patriotism in the development of English political discourse and identity. Thanks to its originality in both approach and content, this volume will be of interest to historians of early modern England as well as scholars of political thought.

Book Synopsis Wild Life on the Plains (Expanded, Annotated) by : General George Armstrong Custer
Download or read book Wild Life on the Plains (Expanded, Annotated) written by General George Armstrong Custer and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an expanded, posthumous version of Custer's "My Life on the Plains" with additional chapters. Whatever you think of George Armstrong Custer, his permanence in American Western history and the history of the Civil War are assured. That makes his writings on his life in the west and his observations of Indian life fascinating to read. It may be surprising to many that Custer felt that, despite his views of Indians largely conforming to those of his white contemporaries, he felt injustices had been done to the Native Americans. He also felt that if he were in their place, he would resent and resist being moved off of traditional lands. A number of other authors lent their talents to creating additional chapters for this 1891 edition. In addition, for the first time in this volume is General Hazen's criticism of Custer's book. Book Synopsis Honor Your Fathers: Catechisms and the Emergence of a Patriarchal Ideology in Germany, 1400-1600 by : Robert J. Bast
Download or read book Honor Your Fathers: Catechisms and the Emergence of a Patriarchal Ideology in Germany, 1400-1600 written by Robert J. Bast and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a fresh perspective on the patriarchal ideology of reform in early modern Germany by revealing its roots in a pan-European catechetical program that had endured a cyclical process of growth and decline since the twelfth century, with each new phase sparked by crises in Church and society. Based on sermons, reform ordinances, devotional treatises and especially catechisms, the book explores the programs developed by reformers and codified in works of religious indoctrination designed to fashion godly fathers (real and metaphorical) in home, church, and body politic. The chief product of this program, argues the author, was an ethos of social discipline that permeated the institutions of each major confession, with government gradually empowered to reach more deeply than ever before into the lives of its subjects.
